Hello... or should i say Hola... or Top of the morning to ya... SO - i find myself in Aidan's house--, London - thinking about how long it's been since my last contact and for that i am really sorry - I've got no excuses really except that I have been seeing the sights rather than the inside of too many internet joints. anyways - that said, i can move on to tell you all about my adventures over the last week and a half. I left London with Kat (girl i worked with in thailand) , Colleen and Tim and we flew into Porto (northern Portugal) to start our 9 day trip through Portugal- from top to bottom. Porto- is a beautiful town with lots to see and lots to drink, especially Port which ... read more

Hi all! Well, our time here in Portugal is quickly coming to an end (just a few days now), but luckily we don’t have to go back and face reality quite yet, as we’re planning to travel around Europe for six or seven weeks before going back at the end of July. We thought it would be fun to let everyone know what our itinerary is, and also to let you know that we are planning to update our blog a lot more frequently while we’re on the road, so check back often! Now, without further ado, here are the destinations on the agenda for this summer… Istanbul Budapest Bratislava, Slovakia Vienna Austria - 7 days with a car, this part’s still a little foggy but may include some of Italy and Switzerland, too (suggestions, ... read more

Last weekend our school organized a field trip to the Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain range in continental Portugal, a couple of hours inland from Coimbra. We were kind of excited about it because it was one of the last parts of Portugal that we'd really wanted to see and hadn't yet. The Serra da Estrela is known for producing serra cheese, some of the best and most expensive in Portugal. We left from the university at the somewhat inhumane hour of 7:45am and headed first to a dam about half an hour away. It was actually a lot more impressive than I thought a dam would be, plus it lent itself to all sorts of hilarious jokes such as “Dam, that thing’s big,” and "Stop taking so many dam pictures." Comic genius. We ... read more

Today, I woke up feeling less than 100%. My throat was a little sore. Maybe I have had a little too much wine over the last few days? Nonetheless, Rob and I had our sights set on Sintra a historic town to the west of Lisbon where the Royals called home. It is said to have a subtropical climate different from the rest of Portugal. The plan was to take the Metro from Chiado to Roma-Areerio and then take a regional train (Sintra Line) to Sintra. Well, we walked to Chiado station and the gates were closed. Okay? We thought maybe this particular entrance was closed so (ex. Farragut North on the weekends) so we knew of another one. It was closed as well, odd... Naturally, Rob was hungry so we made a pit stop ... read more

We woke up and proceeded with our plan to go to the beach. In order to get to the beach I was referred to go to, we had to walk down to the Wharf, Cais Du Sodre and take the ferry across the bay to Cacilhas and then take a bus to Costa Caparica and THEN a taxi to Praia Bella Vista. I'm not exactly sure if the beach was worth the many modes of transportation it took to get there, but it was very secluded except for one or two random naked joggers (um okay??). After a few hours in the sun we made our ay back to the cafe at the entrance of the beach. I had a Caiprinha (okay I had two), Rob had a Caiporska. For food, we had a dish ... read more

AHHHHHH!!!! LAGOS Lets just say...Laura and I love, love, love, lovvvvvveeeeeeee Lagos!!!!!!!!! We are about ready to drop anchor here for the rest of our trip. To give you an example of why I love Lagos so much.....Laura and I decided to go on a boat ride around some grottos. When we got back that guy the guy that booked our boat ride offered us his own homemade red wine, bread and cheese. And it may sound weird in writing about a stranger offering us wine and all but it was in a public area and I donºt think he did it for any other reason but kindness and possible because he had spent some time in New York and mentioned how much he liked New Yorkers. We also stayed in a cute little pension ... read more

We arrived to a lovely day in Faro, southern Portugal - the sunshine was a welcome change to the smoggy london weather! We elected to take a public bus to our apartment in Albufiera (about 15miles from Faro airport), little did we know that we would spend the next 4+ hours (!) tiki-touring around the general area! It was quite an ordeal, considering we just wanted to get to our hotel complex and relax - On the up-side we did see a lot of the area around the Portugese section of the Algarve coast - whether we liked it or not! We finally arrived at the central bus station in Albufiera and caught a cab to our hotel - reflecting all the while that we probably could have WALKED from the airport in a similar ... read more

So, iºm in lagos, portugal...sitting at a bar....pints only 2.50 euros....with free internet...canºt beat it!!!! The trek from dublin to lagos was a long one, but well worth it. We couldnºt find a hostel in dublin our last night (stupid us, we didn´t plan ahead for a friday night in ireland), so we slept in the airport instead...flew to porto, portugal at 925am, and arrived somewhere around noon. We took the metro from the airport to the train station for only 1.85 euros...not bad. We then made a reservation for the train, 4 euros each leg of the trip (portugal requires reserverations for every train trip, which sort of sucks....considering we paid 985 USD for a 2 month train pass). We headed from porto to lisboa....only to make another reservation to tunes....where we changed trains ... read more

We landed in Lisbon and took the Aerobus 91 to Rossio in the center of the city. With just a few map checks along the way (not one wrong turn) we made it Hotel Anjo Azul, a sort of quaint boutique budget hotel. Kind of like a tiny Kimpton with no restaurant, where the bar is also the reception. We dropped off our bags and walked down the block to local grocery/market. We found that wine was really cheap in Paris, 4 or 5 euros for a simple bottle of local table wine. Well, the most expensive bottle of white wine at this market was 3 euros and it was a bottle of Vinho Verde from a Vineyard I've noticed sold in the states. So, we really "splurged" and picked up about six bottles of ... read more
