6-19-07 Slept well last night and woke up in Portugal. I love these night trains. The gentle rocking motion of the train really knocks me out. I got up and stood outside our train sleeping compartment for about an hour trying to get glimpses of the surrounding landscape. The times I did see something out the window there was not much to see. The train arrived about a 1/2 hour late. I talked to a guy from Philadephia that was a construction manager there who told his boss he was taking off for awhile to travel. The boss told him as long as he is back by September he had a job when he got back. He said he did not plan to travel that long. He was about 28 years old I guess and indicated ... read more

After our huge day the day before we opted for a lazy morning and Mick and I wandered along the beach and found a local bakery. We met up with Bern and Shaun for lunch at a beachfront café before heading into Porto for a look around. Porto is a city of cobbled streets, old terraced houses with decorative tiles and statues, lots of them. We saw a police chase with 5 or 6 cop cars chasing a tiny hatchback down the crazy little streets. We crossed over the river to Vila Nova de Gaia, the home of Port houses where all the Port made is brought to store. We toured the large Sandeman Port Wine house complete with tasting. We stopped at a café for a “tower” of beer and some cheese watching rain showers ... read more

Despite feeling a bit rough (mostly Shaun thanks to the Sangria) this morning after our night out, we all piled in the car for the long drive to Lisbon. The 18 Euro toll for the motorway was also a bit off a shock! We enjoyed some lunch and local custard tarts in the city centre before checking out the sights along the river including a fort in the river and a large monument sculpted with famous historical figures looking out to sea. We then negotiated the winding streets to make our way up to the Castelo de Sao Jorge (St John) for the great views but unfortunately the misting rain had other ideas. By then we were hungry so headed back to town for a great meal at a local Middle Eastern restaurant. Bernie and I ... read more

Located in the middle of the southern coast of Portugal, in the area known as the Algarve, is the little beach town of Albuferia. While this town often gets a bad rap in the various travel guides, we find the old town to be delightful. With the official greeter, shown in the first photo, who couldn't be ready to relax and adopt his laid back attitude. Albuferia is especially nice if you plan a trip for any month other than July or August when it is totally over flowing with sun seeking tourists. The golden sandstone cliffs with tunnels leading to the golden sand beach are stunning at any time of the day. Sitting atop these beach side cliffs are the whitewashed walls and the red tiled roofs of the Albuferia village. The town square ... read more

Time for our next adventure. We got up early and drove up to Preston in the rain (again). We met up with Shaun and got out to “John Lennon” airport in Liverpool where we met Bernie with plenty (hours) of time before our flight to Porto in Portugal. We got off the flight and picked up our hire car only to go in the wrong direction and get completely lost! We ended up hailing a taxi and following him to our hotel where we had dinner and went to bed exhausted. Friday we headed north to the resort town of Povoa de Varzim. Along the way we were stuck in traffic for seemingly no reason, only to realise that we were in the path of a cycling race. It added a bit of adventure to the ... read more

MOTOTOUR 2007 Day 11-15: Porto to Lisbon Distance: 334 km (of 8,667 km total) Monday As soon as we were done with breakfast, we were off to Lisbon, where Marion would be meeting up with the rest of her UNICEF delegation, which was convening for a few days of conferences and seminars there. Although by our estimations, there was less than 350 km. left to go, we found ourselves counting down the miles impatiently, waiting to get down to zero, to get to the hotel. More than just a goal, Lisbon had become our fixation -- we'd completely lost our sense of happy-go-lucky wandering and adventurousness. We already learned by now that scheduled stops are generally a bad idea for motorcycle trips where anything can happen on the road. However, we had been overcome by an ... read more

MOTOTOUR 2007 Day 9-10: La Carridad to Porto Distance: 455 km (of 8,667 km total) It was difficult to wake up with damp and rain. Slugs left their slimy trails all over our new tent. We skipped breakfast, did what we had to do to leave and were off to Santiago de Compostelle! There, the skies turned sunny again. We found our way through winding cobble-stoned streets in the old city, and parked the motorcycle in the old town right by the police station. When we enquired as to whether would be safe to leave the bike there with our luggage on it, some officers jested with us that they would personally guard our bike, and one stuck out his hand for a donation It would have been faus pas to offer them anything of course! ... read more
