Wow I know I have complained before but Lisbon is built on mountains, that's what I think anyway others might think they are only hills. On the map we got it looked like our hostel was only a few streets away from where the bus dropped us from the airport. Unfortunately we did'nt take into account that it was all up hill by cobbled streets and we had to drag our luggage up with us. My suitcase is very heavy now with all the presents I have bought for Melanie!!!!!!!! We made it though and after our 5.30am start we were sooooooo happy to get there. The hostel is in the old part of the city called Bairro Alto and it seemed very quaint and quiet when we arrived. We went to bed very early as ... read more

After 5 lovely days in Lisbon we are in the air, en route to Istanbul via London. My parents, who are flying to meet us from Amsterdam (where they spent 4 lovely days with Thai family partying it up and eating yummy hot Thai food…… why didn’t we think of going there again????) are still there as their flight was overbooked, but they got a VERY decent euro compensation! Anyways back to our story! We arrived in Lisbon on Friday afternoon from Sintra. Our hotel was very central, a short stroll from the metro and bam in the middle of one of the main pedestrian malls in Lisbon. We took a stroll down to Placo de Comercial in the late afternoon to take some happy snaps. And got numerous offers of hash along the way! I ... read more

We are now on an Urbano train service to Lisbon. Sintra was a lovely little town, situated 29km from Lisbon. Our accommodation was a salmon pink manor overlooking the historical centre. The owner of the manor was a nice (and a touch eclectic) man named Luis whom we suspected by the Portuguese brochures was a follower of the new age Baha’i religion, which is very refreshing and interesting and so he is probably a hippie at heart. So the manor overlooked a large (unkempt) yard with pool, Jacuzzi, pond etc. Oh and squawking birds too! Wednesday evening we ventured around town and of course the centre is packed with souvenir shops, mostly selling cork products such as (expensive) handbags, purses, postcards etc. I couldn’t believe how useful cork is (not just used as a stopper in ... read more

Madeira - Day 10 We quickly disembarked so we catch the cable car to Monte before the tour buses arrived, and as we rode up in the first chairlift of the day it started to drizzle, at this stage we had no idea of what was to follow. We made our first mistake when we reached Monte, we decided to stop and admire the great views over a coffee. The tour groups over took us and we ended up in a huge line for the wicker taboggan ride back down the mountain. As we inched forward in the line, the rain fell heavier and heavier until it turned into a heavy tropical downpour. Ron kept telling me it would be worth the wait as it was such fun riding in the taboggan. After standing in the ... read more

The next day we flew to Porto. Now, I have flown within the Schengen zone before (Amsterdam to the Canary Islands) but the no passport check back then that didn’t make sense to me now does. Flying within the Schengen zone is like taking a domestic flight which we found out when we went to the immigration window and need not have had our passports checked, nor should we enter the ‘international zone’. Our flight was a small 57 seater - 1.5 hours to the lovely Porto. After a long walk to our hotel, we rested for a while and ventured out to the river whilst stopping many times along the way for photos of the beautiful old buildings. After along long time walking we reached to beautiful Douro river and had dinner there with my ... read more

Its another beautiful fine day and we're going to explore the source of Portugal's famous port wine, the Douro Valley. On the way we are charmed by the town of Amarante, locals flowing out of the church as we enter the square. Its an idyllic spot with a sunny cafe, the river and old stone bridge, and the old church. Keith is happy to soak up the square's atmosphere, sitting near an accordian player while we explore the church. Pulling aside the thick red curtain we discover yet another delightful church interior, and in the adjoining courtyard a well-worn row of confessionals. I briefly consider taking the opportunity, but unfortunately the dimensions were not designed for wee frogs. We follow the Douro River up the valley. The steep hills have been extensively terraced to provide footholds ... read more

I´nt Portugal fab!!! This is our second week in Portugal now and despite not understanding a word anyone says we are having a super time. After a night by the sea at Isala Cristina we crossed the impressive border at a suspension bridge over a dried river bed. There was almost immediately gentler scenery, lush green dotted with white houses. We stayed in a lovely house just outside Tavira, surrounded by olive trees with a view to the sea. Highlights include a bucks fizz breakfast at 10:10:10 on the 10/10/10 ; the enchanting Santa Luzia with its wading birds, little train, magnificent fish restuarant and magical beach; Pojo Inferno- a waterfall into an emerald green pool where I would have loved to have skinny dipped but was already in trouble for having a muddy bum ........and ... read more

Caminho Portugés Introduction After the Camino Francés (French Way) the Caminho Portugés (Portugés Way) is the most popular of all the ways to St James. Most pilgrims start at Tui as it’s a short route into a see Jimmy and obtain a Composetela. This time as it is winter we will be starting in Santiago and heading south to Lisboa, trying to keep ahead of the rain. Well that is the theory, but the rain has followed us from Spain so far! The Caminho Portugés is one of richest cultural and architectural heritages of the existing Caminos. In Portugal there is a long history of devotion to St James and St Roch, the patron Saint of Pilgrimage. Representations of both Saints are to be found everywhere along the pilgrim road, some can be in prominent ... read more

This blog is a very brief rundown our time spent driving up the coast of Portugal. We entered Portugal in the Algarve (south) but skipped the touristy section and headed straight for the south-west tip. The day we got there the surf was really good at a break called Zavial. I had a good surf but the crowds put a dampener on it. Good welcoming to Portugal nonetheless. The following two weeks we travelled up the coast stopping at dozens of beaches, all the way up to Lisbon. We free camped in the beach car parks every night. Talk about a room with a view! We’d just back the van up facing the sunset, cook dinner and a few drinks each night. Very cruisy, relaxing and just what camping in the van is all about. When ... read more
