The Lisbon to Porto transfer was by motorcoach. We would board our Viking river vessel, Viking Torgil, in Porto. The standard transfer is via Coimbra with a stop to see the university. However, Susan and I opted for the transfer with stops at Fatima and the monastery at Batalha. This choice proved to be a fascinating journey into Portuguese history. The courier and guide who accompanied our coach group introduced himself as a professor of travel and tourism at a private Lisbon university. He was very knowledgeable bout Portuguese history and narrated most of our journey. His first topic concerned the forests we were traversing. I had taken note of the fact that they highway to Batalha was though a heavily forested landscape, not what I had expected to see. (I had expected farmland, or arid ... read more

Day 14 day of our holiday . Pumpkin day. There are pumpkins growing everywhere. Big ones and small ones , some still green, others turning orange. Enough to fill a lot of pumpkin pies or turn into shells in which to place tea lights on Halloween. Today was another blazing hot day with the sun beaming down. Weather back home in Britain is as usual awful from all accounts so we feel blessed that we are still getting sunny days which are at least as good as we were getting over the summer back home. We are reaching the end of the fire season here. From June to late September there is the risk of fires in the wooded areas of which there are many. Today is more motorway driving day and to top it all ... read more

So Lisboa lost out . The morning started off hot and we decided to pack up and move to Alcobaca . More motorways along the way. More fines probably. We have become rather complacent as we possibly rack them up. I guess as Glenn says there is nothing you can do about it so why bother worrying. Our destination was the monastery in the town on Alcobaca . There is nothing to commend Alcobaca apart from a reasonable coffee shop where we drank coffee and ate apple cake . There is also an excellent easy to find parking space for hundreds of motorhomers. Free to park as well which is a bonus and always welcome. We walked to the town which was disappointing. Very few shops and very little action. Some empty factory type buildings along ... read more

WOKE UP AROUND 8AM, HAD OUR TYPICAL BREAKFAST AND HEADED TO FIRST STOP, THE BATTLE MONASTERY (MONISTERIO BATALHA). WE PASSED THRU PORTO DE MOS, THEN TOOK N352 ALL THE WAY TO BATALHA. FROM MY INTERNET RESEARCH, I'D THOUGHT THERE WASN'T MUCH TOWN THERE, JUST MOSTLY THE MONASTERY, BUT AS WE DROPPED DOWN INTO TOWN, I REALIZED I WAS WRONG. BATALHA, THE TOWN, IS REALLY PRETTY GOOD SIZED. WE WEREN'T SURE HOW CLOSE WE COULD PARK TO THE MONASTERY, SO WHEN WE GOT OFF THE HIGHWAY ONTO THE MAIN STREET AND WERE PRETTY SURE IT WAS CLOSE, I PULLED INTO AN EASY TO PARK SPOT BY THE ROAD AND PAID MY 1.50 EUROS FOR A COUPLE HOURS OF PARKING. IT TURNED OUT THE MONASTERY WAS JUST A FEW BLOCKS DOWN THE STREET. WE TURNED THE CORNER AND ... read more
