5 September 2016, Monday, Rest day and exploring Coimbra. Still walked 4.62 miles. Karen here. Today's blog is long and deals with the wonderful university with its stunning library, reflections on books, keeping in shape when your university is at the top of a hill, and the old cathedral with few Biblical scenes to be found. Our rest day in the lovely university town of Coimbra will be spent traveling up the hill to the university - and then down the hill. These students must be in very good shape!! We saunter back to the main plaza that welcomes travelers crossing the Ponte Santa Clara Bridge. Harlan finds a narrow, straight up alley way and off we go. We arrive, huffing and puffing, in a square, that fronts the entry portal into the original palace grounds, ... read more

Sunday, 4 September 2016, Condeixa-a-Nova to Coimbra, day 10 Up and Down, Up and down 25739 steps 85 stairs 11.24 miles. Garmin GPS 12.39 miles As we are leaving the pousada, we see a potting wheel and paints for children to use in making ceramic pieces. see photos. This pousada, our home for a night, started life as a 14thc. palace. At the beginning of the 19th c. it was an inn and entertained royalty and nobility from many European nations. In 1993 it was purchased and became part of the network of pousadas of Portugal. These historical inns are similar to the network of buildings with like backgrounds in Spain that are called paradors. We start the day in the company of the two women from California. It is a beautiful, early morning. We pass ... read more

We drove to Coimbra but you can also get here by train or bus. Our hotel Coimbra Vintage Lofts used to be a factory and had a parking garage across the street. We did not move our car until it was time to leave because you can walk all over this city and you do not need a car, bus or taxie. This is a college town and it was Portugals capital for 100 years. The Romans and Moors were also here. In the Roman times Coimbra was called Aeminium. A river runs through the city and you can walk along the river and stop to visit shops. The old town is up from the river about five blocks. There is a pedestrian only street that runs parallel to the river in old town with lots ... read more

Coimbra, Portugal is the third largest city in this country of 11.2 million people and has the oldest University in Europe, established in the 13th Century. We walked up the hill to the University yesterday afternoon and had coffee in School of Letters building, and did a self guided tour of the oldest buildings. The library is the main tourist draw but we decided not to spend 14 euros on tickets, and instead just walked around campus, stopping at our way down the hill to duck in to a student bar for a late afternoon SuperBock, one of two ubiquitous beers. The bar itself had furniture settings made of driftwood and was pretty unique. The weather is supposed to be a mix of sun and rain today but so far the rain only fell last night ... read more

Had a minor set-back this morning, the first of the trip (I've been waiting for it). Happened when I accidentally got on the wrong bus out of Lisbon, one going South when I'm heading North. But I quickly realized my error, told the bus driver to kindly pull over as soon as possible, grabbed my luggage, hailed a cab, was rushed back to the bus station, boarded the right bus, and miraculously arrived in Fatima with no real damage done. I factored enough time into my schedule at Fatima that I actually left on the bus I wanted to in the afternoon. No harm no foul. This event, though, has made me think of many things, mainly about how travel is truly an odd combination of intense planning and calculation, almost down to your every step ... read more

Hurray, we made it to our Coimbra hotel without the use of Miss GPS. To get here we took a chance with our book of Europe road maps and kept off the motorway system. As yet we have not been arrested for travelling on the electronic toll road without paying so the blogs keep coming. “Get arrested!” we hear some of you say. Sorry, we think we have a “Get out of jail” free card. All we have to do is go to a post office somewhere in Portugal and confess. We stopped at a wayside fruit stall and bought fresh cherries at 2.50 euros per kilo. We didn’t want that many and the man’s scales couldn’t register the small amount we bought, so after haggling him up from free to 2 euros everyone was happy. ... read more

The expansive generosity of the Verdade family was expressed once again as we were shuttled down the road to Coimbra. This was particularly appreciated because of rotating strikes on the part of the train service. I suppose they imagined us waiting at the station, with kids, for a train that might never come...depending on the whims of the union. But, good natured lovingkindness won over civic unrest. Coimbra is the home of Portugal's oldest university. It is the part of the country where one begins to notice the strong influence of Moorish culture. When Afonso Henrique threw off the Moorish yoke in 1145, Portugal as a distinct society began its development. But a large part of that identity is Arabic in origin. You can see it in the architecture and the music, in the darker skin ... read more

From Porto, we zip down the line and land in Mogofores station. It's time to spend some time with our friends the Verdades. The Familia Verdade live in a town called Avelas de Cima. No one could tell me how old the place was, but it's easy to see that the place is pretty darn old. After the bustle of Porto, Avelas de Cima was positively tranquil. People are old fashioned and extremely friendly. It could be the community ammenities, like the communal laundry pool (in use even in frigid March) and fountains (three, to be exact) that present excellent quality spring water to any who wish to take it. Sleepy cafes with sunny seats, orange and lemon trees left wild (producing abundantly even now) and a profusion of huge, naturalized canna lilies frame the rest ... read more

So I am skipping a few days out of our trip because I didn't bring the right memory cards for pictures, but I will make another entry on them out of sequence because it really was a fantastic place! After departing Lisbon and our traveling mates, we headed up the coast and spent two nights in Peniche and one night in Obidos (to follow) then off to the university town of Coimbra. The university is the main 'industry' there and the whole city seems to revolve around it. It has been around since the 11th century and has a very prestigious reputation and long list of famous scholars. We booked in at the Hotel Oslo and got a bit of a deal with some fancy negotiating---We were parked out front and someone pulled up behind me ... read more
