Coimbra is a university town, but until recently most of the students hadn’t been here. In the last couple of weeks, the town has been changing a lot as classes for some programs have started and the students have started to return. Certain parts of the city that seemed kind of deserted before are now packed with students sitting at cafes, having a coffee or a beer with friends. It seems like everybody is always out - I’m not sure if this will continue as the semester wears on and the weather gets cooler, but for now it’s very festive. One of the interesting things that has been going on is that the older students have been “hazing” the first-year students. It doesn’t seem to be anything too awful, but it’s definitely aimed at humiliating the ... read more

We just finished our first week of classes. It’s a pretty intense schedule, with 23 hours of class a week and four different subjects. We’re both in the beginning level, which has moved really fast (present tense, present progressive, ser vs. estar - all in the first 4 days!). As we expected, we are among the oldest students in the class. There are about 35 students in our class, and maybe 3 or 4 other people who are beyond standard college age. It’s been fine, though, and a lot of the students are really friendly. We’re the only Americans, and there are two girls from Quebec, and everyone else is European - there are a surprising number of students from Eastern Europe - Lithuania, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary - as well as a lot from Turkey. We ... read more

Saturday night Jason and I went to a free fado performance down the street from our apartment. Fado is a traditional music from Portugal, and there are two different styles, Coimbra fado and Lisbon fado. The fado from Coimbra is considered more academic and only performed by men, while the fado from Lisbon is more popular, and both women and men can sing it. The fado group we saw had three members: one classical guitar player, one Portuguese guitar player, and one vocalist. They played for an hour in a cool spot near the old city wall. There were probably about a hundred people there, and it seemed like a mix of tourists and locals. Towards the end of the performance, the vocalist invited the audience to sing along, and a surprising number of people knew ... read more

Friday was kind of an odd/funny day because it was the first day that we needed to find our own internet access because we couldn’t use the hotel’s wireless network anymore (we checked out on Thursday) and our appointment with Portugal Telecom to set up DSL in our apartment is not until next week. We need internet at least every weekday so Lindsay can do her translation work and so I can write about the mundane details of our lives (and a few interesting things) for this blog. We started our quest for an internet connection by going to the free internet café in the touristy part of town, but there wasn’t any way for Lindsay to connect with her own laptop and there was a 30 minute time limit to use their computers and a ... read more

I took some pictures of our apartment this morning. We haven’t really moved in yet, we’ll be doing that today, but we’re pretty happy with the layout of the apartment. There are 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, and a living room/kitchen combo room. Yesterday we bought a little TV (we get 1 Portuguese station right now) and a little FM radio/CD player (haven’t had time yet to check for stations.) I’m also uploading a few other pictures we’ve taken around Coimbra so far. - Jason ... read more

Well, we officially live in Portugal now! We got an apartment today that we’re really happy with, have already gotten cell phones, and have applied for bank accounts (which required a whole other set of minor administrative tasks that went surprisingly smoothly). We even went to Carrefour today and got stocked up with kitchen supplies and sheets and towels and stuff. Coimbra seems to be a fairly pleasant city, despite being kind of hot right now. We’re told that the heat will soon give way to months and months of cold, rainy weather, which actually sounds pretty nice right now. The people here have been really nice to us and almost everyone we’ve come across has spoken at least some English. People seem very willing to go out of their way to help the confused foreigners ... read more

We really aren't getting much time at each stop and the rain has put a literal damper on the exploring by foot. But, we are on our way to Coimbra in the north to stay at the Pousada in Condeixa de Nova. Road maps can be a great tool, but a comparision of the Hertz map and the Michelin map leads us to a gap in the road. Fall back and regroup over lunch before getting on the main north-south highway. Once we get to the off-ramp for Condeixa, things get interesting - this is where that habit of dropping part of the name from the road signs takes effect and after a hour stuck in traffic from a fender-bender on a two-lane road and a failure to connect a sign to Condeixa with the pousada ... read more
