Hi Everyone, This weekend was the Capital of Poland - Warsaw. My main impression is surprise at how modern it is. I was expecting some old buildings, with a bit of a run down soviet style being the norm. Instead, I got a completely modern city. The Warsaw uprising of WWII resulted in most of the city being levelled, so the Soviets had clean slate to work with. Most of the area surrounding the downtown shows this via the large and characterless apartment blocks and office buildings. The downtown area is a different story - thoroughly modern and stylish. Poland really took off after the fall of the Soviet Union. There's still an "Old Town" section that shows the pre-WWII character, but it's mostly reconstructed and not actually old. As I mentioned earlier, we set out to visit this capital city of Poland with lowered expectations for a few reasons, (a) some Poles had told us not to bother but to see Krakow instead and (b) I was less interested in the Soviet communist influence on its architecture. But, one should not ignore a capital city that was so devastated in that conflict. And so we arrived by train to its massive main central station then headed out amidst heavy rush hour traffic to find our apartment in the old city. The UK Labour Party has recently announced a Battle Bus as part of their pre-election campaign to highlight and promote women’s issues. There is nothing unusual in that perhaps, except that the bright pink bus drew more attention than any of the background policies behind the initiative. The colour has had more success at Warsaw’s Modlin Airport and the bright pink Scania advertises itself amongst the grey surroundings of the old military airstrip. We had tickets for the 13:50 and we were not sure whether this was the 13:30. The driver seemed unconcerned and 40 minutes later, we were deposited in front of the Soviet architectural masterpiece in central Warsaw that masquerades as the Palace of Culture. Jest pomysł - będziemy oglądać młyny nad Świdrem . Kiedy się szykujemy, sms od znajomych: "idziecie na spacer?", więc zapraszamy ich na naszą wyprawę. Pierwszy młyn wypatrzyliśmy na mapie w miejscowości Bolesławów i tam właśnie jedziemy. Kierujemy się bocznymi, często gruntowymi drogami nad Świder. Udało nam się odnaleźć zaznaczony na mapie młyn, a właściwie jego pozostałości. Nad brzegiem tabliczka: rezerwat przyrody. Rezerwat obejmuje dolinę rzeki Świder. W miejscu, gdzie był młyn pozostała tama. Na mrozie utworzyły się przy niej malownicze sople. Tylko na d... read more
