Today was a free day in Warsaw before the tour officially began. Susan and I planned to explore the old town and visit Warsaw Castle. While the tour would later make a stop there, ti would not go inside the castle as we planned to do. St. John's Archcathedral = Archikatedra św. Jana w Warszawie. Built in the 14th century in Masovian Gothic style. "The cathedral was rebuilt after the war. The exterior reconstruction is based on the 14th-century church's presumed appearance, not on its prewar appearance". "It is a Gothic edifice with nave and aisle of equal height, founded by the Masovian dukes about the middle of the 13th cent. and embellished by John III Sobieski and others".--Baedeker 1914. A friend of ours is going to Poland this week. She will be visiting Warsaw and Lublin (which we did not visit) principally to do research for a book she is writing. We've encouraged her to also visit Krakow, probably the most beautiful city in Poland.
