This morning in Toruń was a walking tour of the old town. As I mentioned, Toruń was Monika's home, so she was an excellent guide. The group again assembled at the Monastery Gate. Apartment House

Mixed-use commercial and residential building. The structure dat to the 14th century, but was rebuilt in the mid-19th century. The renovation replaced the Gothic façade with a Neoclassical design Mercury stands in a second story niche. Bedronka (Ladybug) is a grocery store on the ground floor. Ulica Szeroka 22. DSC_0230

Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Kościół Rzymskokatolicki pw. Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Marii Panny - Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Built as a Franciscan church in 1270-1300. It was used by the Protestants in 1724-1821. One of the three preserved Gothic churches in the Old Town Toruń. Panny Marii 2. Medieval Town of Toruń UNESCO World Heritage site. Inscribed in 1997. Kościół Rzymskokatolicki pw. Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Marii Panny - Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Gothic side entrance. Built as a Franciscan church in 1270-1300. District Court

Sąd Okręgowy - District Court. Built in 1870 i the English Neo-Gothic style. Ulica Piekary 51. DSC_0226p1

Ratusz

Ratusz (Rathaus) - Old Town Hall. Built in 1391-1399. Enlarged in 1605-1605 in the Mannerist style. Rynek Staromiejski 1. Medieval Town of Toruń UNESCO World Heritage site. Inscribed in 1997. "The Rathaus of the 13th, 14th, and 17th cent, (restored after a fire in 1703) contains the Museum on the third floor (restaurant in the massive vaulted Katskeller; fine view from the old tower)".--Baedeker 1910. Pomnik Mikołaja Kopernika

Pomnik Mikołaja Kopernika - Copernicus Monument and the Ratusz (Old Town Hall). The monument to astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543), a native of Toruń, was installed in 1853. Medieval Town of Toruń UNESCO World Heritage site. Inscribed in 1997. DSC_0220

Filuś

Sculptural group honouring Polish artist Zbigniew Lengren (1919-2003). The group represents his characters Professor Filutek and his dog Filuś. Adjacent to the Toruń Ratusz. IMG_5859

Poczta Główna - Main Post Office. Built in 1881-1884 as the Post & Telegraph Office. Rynek Staromiejski 15. IMG_5788

Post Office Portal

Decorative doorway on the Toruń Main Post Office. Although built in 1881-1884 in a Neo-Gothic style the door retains the red brick with black and white accents of Medieval Toruń. IMG_5793

Gingerbread baker at work. Toruń has been known for its gingerbread making (Toruńskie Pierniki) since the 13th century. IMG_5866

Hotel Bulwar

Hotel Bulwar. The hotel is the former Racławice Barracks (Racławice Kaserne) built in 1819-1822 It was used as the Naval Academy from 1921 to 1938. Adaptive use as a hotel in 2001 with a new entrance and lobby. Ulica Filadelfijski 18. IMG_5821p1

I had totally forgotten that Copernicus was Polish. I had come to think of him as a Greek/Italian scholar. Torun look like it's packed with history and character :)
