In search of the perfect camping spot, we stopped the car by a mountainous lay-by. We trekked around the tall trees and rocky slopes, taking care to avoid the backbreaking rocks. We suddenly became alert as the sand of water trickles onto our radar. Basic bushmen instincts pushed us to follow the alluring sound of fresh water. As we neared the source, our shoes began to complain of the dampness, my wellies on several occasions stubbornly stuck its heels in and refused to travel any further, leaving my exposed foot dangling in the warm air. Eventually we listened to our shoes and turned to drier ground. Climbing higher, everytime, tiptoeing on the shoulders of the grand rocky structures, trying to see what they could see. As we scrambled to the peak, exhausted, the rocks lets us ... read more

Our last day in Norway was absolutely awesome! After a luxurious sleep in, little Gina made us breakfast - very cute. Then Lillian took us three girls up a mountain to play in some snow. We had a whole heap of fun. We then headed back down the mountain to the family's cabin (which is as big as their house) on the fjord. We ate a bbq followed by some icecream (with jam!) and the rest of the family met us and we all went for a walk... We got a little bit muddy but it was well worth it for the spectacular views. The girls (Lillian, Gina, Bri, Alyce & Mich) visited a waterfall on the way home, where they got fairly drenched. We've packed our things and are catching the bus to Bergen early ... read more

Hi everyone, We have made it safely to Bri's 'family' in Forde... It was a mostly uneventful trip. We left Flam and caught the bus to Hermansverk, and, thanks to a really friendly Norwegian dude, were dropped outside of our hotel. He was very amused throughout the trip by our inability to pronounce place names correctly, and also an interesting exchange a nervous Michy had about tunnels through mountains; Mich: This bus doesn't go through that dark, scary tunnel does it? Man: No... Mich: Oh, wow! Im grateful for that! I really, really do not like the idea of going through a mountain. Man: But we do have to go through that mountain over there. And that one. And... I think that one also. Mich: Oh. Dear. God. Man: Oh! And also, we go through what ... read more

If you go to the small town of Flam in Norway, you will probably hear a strange rumour about Australian women. Apparently, they seem to lack the basic understanding needed to operate showers. And bath plugs. And doors. And windows. So this is an official apology to all Aussie women who are affected by this rumour: we are really, incredibly sorry that it started with us. But, in our defence, it was far more embarassing to us than you. *sigh* To take things back to the begining... We spent 5 hours on the train from Oslo to Myrdal (we took some pictures of where we could have potentially almost frozen to death on account of our messed-up accommodation), then caught the Flamsbana to Flam. The train ride was spectacular - we especially loved Kjosfossen Falls. Our ... read more

After a nice walk this morning (and the best free breakfast EVER) we booked a taxi to the train station in order to avoid the death walk. Unfortunately, the only taxi in town was busy taking an old lady to hospital. One of the hotel staff insisted that she drive the "Aussie Girls" to the station free of charge - how could we say no? On the way, we received a question that we had heard from every single person we had encountered... "Australia.... so, may I ask... what are you doing here? " Charlottenberg was indeed a strange place to end up. Nice though. We caught the train successfully to Oslo, checked into our hotel (after a semi-killer walk) and then went out and bought ourselves some crazy clown pants! We are going to watch ... read more

We decided that whilst we had attempted some pretty full-on feats so far, we needed to challenge ourselves - I mean REALLY challenge ourselves - so agreed on eight desired sights to do in just ONE day... We awoke bright and early, (5:45am - though our parents probably don't believe us) and headed downstairs to the breakfast smorgasbord, where we feasted and also stole sandwhiches for later in our travels. We walked down to the T-Bane (Underground station) and caught the train to Vigeland Park, a park (in the middle of Frogner Park) dedicated to the works of Norwegian artist Gustav Vigeland. We were completely blown away by his meaningful and sometimes confronting works. Our photos don't really do the experience justice, but will hopefully give you some idea of the amazing nature of the park... ... read more

We awoke at what seemed to be a ridiculously early time (although hindsight has taught us that we can always push ourselves further) and went downstairs, where the lovely, considerate staff at the Bergen Travel Hotel had put out breakfast for us early. (Incidentally, we just wanted to mention how helpful they were in every respect, and how much we enjoyed our stay there! If you go to Bergen, you should stay there - it's cheap, in the centre of everything, really beautifully furnished and the staff are, as mentioned, legends.) We trekked ourselves down to the trainstation - actually, it was more of a trot on account of the fact we were running slightly late. Eventually figured out our carriage and seats - turns out it was well worth the 50K (about $11) reservation for ... read more

Emily and I just returned from a great trip the farthest north I will most likely ever go. We went waaay up north, 1500 miles from the northpole, 750km drive from my house to the town of Tromsø, Norway. We took a highway right on the Sweden-Finnish border all the way up past the point where Finland, Sweden and Norway all border each other. Once we hit Norway the scenery got much better. We saw a moose! and drove along fjords to one of the northern most cities in europe. We spent two nights in Tromsø. It was a quaint little town and twilight lasted until 11pm. Only a month left until they get the midnight sun. The streets were really confusing in Tromso. There wasn't much planning involved. A lot of streets were dead ends, ... read more

It’s really hard for me to think back through my whole break and remember what I did three weeks ago. But it’s nice to reread my journal and look over everything because it reminds me of even more things that I didn’t write down. Norway is a biggie, so get ready. Let’s see, I left off with meeting Sara, Steven, and Sara’s parents in London and we left for Norway. The reason I went to Norway with them is because they have family still living there. Sara and Steven are cousins, and their great great grandpa left Norway in the 1910’s at the age of 17 (and didn’t go back to Norway until he was 80!). So when Sara’s parents came to visit her, that was the perfect opportunity for them to go to Norway and ... read more

"I hate flying. Damn planes!" "My legs are TIRED!" "Where is my damn sock?!?" "My feet hurt!... Especially just here. See?" "I seriously cannot find my sock." "I feel like death." "Wow! Check out your crazy eyes! Hahahahaha! How TIRED are you?' "That man has a REALLY big guitar!" "We won't need coats outside..." "I can't find my ticket." "Does anyone know where my sock is?" "WHERE DID I PUT MY TICKET?!?" "I think it's this way.... Oh... Wait..." "IS ANYTHING OPEN AROUND HERE?!?! ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" Ah, just some of the delightful phrases uttered by your heroic travellers. (We edited out the profanities for our PG viewers.) Our last day in Bergen was completely, chaotic - just see the map attached of how far we walked.... It was also slightly disappointing.... T... read more
