Days and agendas are up in the air as is the nature of expedition cruising. We started earlier than usual today (6am rather than 7am), to make room for a bit of longer-distance travel between sights today. First stop was a zodiac cruise in a fjord called Sallyhamna. Nothing to see at the start except for a few seals and the ubiquitous birds, until the zodiacs rounded the corner and there is the most almighty cliff face of ice, part of the Sallyhamna glacier.. Willing a huge piece to fall off was unsuccessful. Two hours steaming towards an area called Fuglesongen (bird song). We zodiaced to a rocky beach (very slippery and awkward). then walked up a fairly sheer cliff and sat on a cold rock, whilst thousands of birds pretended not to notice we were ... read more

Early morning checkout from hotel with transport to Oslo airport. There is something about guided tours that is a bit lazy….everything just happens. The trade off is that you spend a bit of time waiting for others but I think this is more than outweighed by the fact that it is all laid on for you. A two hour flight to Tromsø on the Norwegian coast, followed by a bizarre deplaning, checkout, passport control and check-in through a separate gate, getting back on the same plane in the same seat! We worked out later that this is because Longyearbyen is outside of the Schengen customs zone which explains the extra layer of beauracracy. Airport signs in Norwegian, English and Russian suggest we are heading to a unique part of the world. Norway is FULL of lakes. ... read more

LONGYEARBYEN (LONG YEAR BIN) Named for American mine owner John M. Longyear this will be our last stop in the Svalbard and its largest island Spisbergen. As we came into port, machinery of the coal mining operation was clearly visible; a cable and bucket system takes the coal from wherever to the port. There are1,800 inhabitants here and it is home to the Governor of Svalbard and is the administrative center for this isolated group of islands. Longyearbyen has an arctic tundra climate and yes THERE BE BEARS HERE. Two days ago a party for Swedish researchers were about four miles north of here when they were attacked by a polar bear. The alternative story is that there is a children’s camp nearby and that is where the attack happened. Despite being armed, one of the ... read more

Ny Alesund This tiny settlement is home to researchers from around the world. We were instructed to stay on the paths and not to go out of the settlement. Buildings are scattered around, many from the days when coal mining was king here. There is a mining museum that has artifacts from those days. Then here are some larger wooden buildings that house scientists from various countries. There are modern glass and concrete structures that house the permanent researchers from countries such as Norway and Germany. Austria’s building looks like an outhouse. China’s has lions guarding the doorway. There are very strict environmental laws and the fines are hefty, around $7,500 for littering. They are very serious about preservation here and permission to visit is contingent on the good behavior of the passengers. While in these ... read more

Svalbard – the black mountains It took me half a day to figure out what was 'wrong' in Svalbard – obviously it is a desolated mountain kingdom, but it is black, barren mountains – crna gora of the north – Birgitte put words on the missing pjeces – not a tree, not a bush – nothingness. Black, gray, white. And no life – except 8 species of birds, and supposedly a polar bear somewhere out there. How did we end up here? I don't know – probably because it is there and you can get there for your bonus points as it counts as domestic Norway. It is a close to the North Pole as I'll ever get, 78 degrees north, Longyearbyen. SAS had in June 'half bonus price' for all of Scandinavia, so we travelled ... read more
