Yay! After 5 some-odd weeks apart, Kat's made it across the pond for a week-long stay. After picking her up at Schipol Airport, we went up to Amsterdam to visit the Anne Frank house, Heineken Experience brewery tour, and of course walk around the 'scenic' red light district. Kat was less than impressed with the quality of the ladies who were out and about during the mid-afternoon hours, but hey, I guess if you're particularly lonely, the friendly lady with poor dental hygeine and fat rolls on her forearms might be the kind of company you're looking for. The Anne Frank house was markedly crowded, but well worth it. The museum does a good job of relating the differnt parts of the house and relevant artifacts to the war history and personal story of the house's ... read more

here i am in the city of sin!! only kidding. only a tiny bit of it is bad. i'm writing this in the basement of our hostel - the nightclub. it's so cool. a little bit overrun with 16 year olds on school camp but that's ok. there's a group of 6 of us that are over 19 coz the legal age is lower here. it's pretty fun and internet is free. i arrived at 6ish tonight. went out for dinner - chinese - for the first time in ages and that was fun. then came back here and having a bit of a boogey on the dance floor. don't know what i'm going to do tomorrow but i think the next day i'll go to the haag. finally see some tulips maybe. should be good. ... read more

Thanks for following our 2005 travels through Europe. Hope you enjoyed our journals. As dusk falls over Amsterdam we take a last look out of our hotel room window and see this beautiful sight - Amsterdam at dusk. If all goes well, our plan is to visit The Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary in 2007, in the meanwhile, we'll report from Northern California's Gold Country - its highways and byways. We are acutely aware of the overwhelming beauty and natural wonder just outside our own front door. So long, till next time, we love you!... read more

I have been in Amsterdam now for six days. It’s Sunday morning, cool with a hint of dampness in the air, birds were singing earlier around five a.m. when I first opened my eyes. The Dutch weather has been mostly ugly, cool to cold, blustery winds, gray skies for the most part and rain just about every day. But what did I expect weather-wise, this is Northern Europe and it’s only the first week in May. The trees are green and the tulips are up and outside my window right now in the quiet early time at my hotel, through the frosted pane of glass, there is a patch of blue up in the sky. Two young Turks, very nice young men, run my hotel. And the waitress at my favorite café is Polish. So—I really ... read more

This is truely an experience, one which I can see doing again. For an admission price of Ten Euros, about Fourteen US Dollars, it is fun and a great value for people who like and appreciate good beer. Admission includes three half-pint glasses of Heineken - one early in the tour at the "Brewhouse Bar" and the last two at the end, in the "See You Again Bar" - as well as a souvenir tin and glass at the very end of your tour. Exhibits include explanations of the brewing process and the history of Heineken. Highlights of the tour include two Disney like rides; the first in which visitors stand on a moving platform as they witness the bottling process through the eyes of a bottle; the second involves a simulation of a Heineken horse ... read more

We stayed in Amsterdam today, got around by walking and taking the tram to various parts of town for music, sightseeing and enjoying the Day of Liberation festivities. The National Celebration Day of Liberation and Freedom was held in Amsterdam with two great events. In the afternoon and evening the big "Bevrijdingsfestival" is organized in the Museumplein, a multicultural festival of music celebrating freedom. The National Celebration concludes in the evening with a festive open-air concert on Amsterdam's Amstel River in front of Theater Carre. In attendance was HM Queen Beatrix and members of government, this concert was simultaneously broadcast live on television throughout the country.... read more

It's an Orange thing! The prevalent color, symbolizing Dutch national and royal pride, stems from the royal family name - The Family Nassau, House of Orange. Wandering through Amsterdam on Queensday can give the impression that it is in honor of the many gay queens who converge on the city for this giant out in the open street party when it is in fact the official celebration of the Dutch sovereign's birthday. Queensday was introduced originally by Queen Wilhelmina since 1902. Her daughter Queen Juliana was born on April 30, which made this day a national holiday in The Netherlands when she officially became Queen. Her daughter and the current Queen of the Netherlands, Queen Beatrix, decided to keep Queensday on the 30th of April as a tribute to her mother. Cities and towns all over ... read more

Today, we'll take a bike ride through the Tulip Fields of Holland, just a few miles from the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam. This trip was organized by Frederik from Let's Go Bike Tours. We experienced the magnificent flowering bulb fields with thousands of hyacinths, narcissus and tulips in countless colors on a bike, very exhilerating and picturesque! The scenery is beautiful and very Dutch. The bike lanes are almost completely flat. We saw the tulip fields and modern, as well as centuries old country houses, small towns, villages and a visit to the Pannenkoekenhuis (pancake house) and Uitspanning "De Oase" ("The Oasis" Pub) for Pannenkoeken (traditional dutch pancakes) and locally brewed beer. The best time to see the bulbs in bloom is around mid-April to early May (or a little earlier or later, depending on ... read more

Got into Amsterdam @ 7:15am, got to the gate for JNB flight and found a voicemail from Jim--they were all delayed 4 hours out of Newark. I wouldn't be able to meet up with them in AMS. I made my flight after a quick shower. The time in Amsterdam went fast. Everything in the airport was in English. On the flight I've been mistaken for being Dutch. I look the part. When I was checking about the delay situation, I changed my seat. It turned out to be right by the restrooms but with 5 feet of legroom. Sweet. We're flying over the Sahara right now at 1:20pm and I cannot see anything by clouds of course. ... read more
