Wow. Dutch people are wild. This weekend I had been invited to go to Switzerland to ski with a group of people, something I really wanted to do. For a few days I was locked in to go, but as always, I made the last minute decision not to go, a decision that was aided by the fact that I had booked my hostel for the wrong weekend. Carnaval, we had been told, was something worth sticking around for. Ben had read that Thursday night of Carnaval in Cologne, Germany was one of the craziest parties in Europe, so I tagged along for the start, which would be at 11:11. We rode the same train to Cologne as the group going to Switzerland, which was fun and gave us a good final goodbye. When the train ... read more

Follow me to colorful faces, leprechauns and wolfs, pirates and batman, popes giving out condoms and along the yellow brick road that is the carnival of Maastricht! Oh and after you had a look at the photos on this website and realized your life would be more complete if only you saw a little bit more - follow this link to see more photos: http://picasaweb.google.com/dkruchkoff/MaastrichtCarnivalNetherlands210209To220209?authkey=yxFP-Pg1RIE&feat=directlink. Carnival Maastricht was crazy. And good. Both crazy and good. The night of Friday 20, February 2009 I took a train after work to Nijhmen. Nijhmen is in the south of the Netherlands and is considered to be the oldest city in the Netherlands and celebrated its 2000th year of existence in 2005. A lot of the old buildings have been reconstructed as it was bombed by friendly fire by the ... read more

With the first week of classes coming to an end, my roommate Ben and I decided to do a little exploring. The first trip came Wednesday, when a trip to the supermarket turned into a short ride around some paths in the nearby woods, which then turned into a 2 hour trip to another country. Europe's pretty cool. Unfortunately we didn't think to bring a camera to the supermarket, so we were without documentation of this extremely scenic trip. It started out with a ride around the sand dunes, which I already have a picture of below. Having seen how close Germany was on a map, I became determined to ride further east to reach the border. So we blindly rode on, pedaling down unfamiliar paths away from the setting sun. At one fork in the ... read more

My first time in Europe, and the stories are true. After a sleepless plane ride made worse by a Nyquil-induced mini-trip and the painful experience of watching the first 20 min of "Miracle at St. Anna," we landed at Schipol airport, all 80 of us, and stumbled through customs into a rainy Amsterdam. My half hour stay in there was a blur of American fast food signs, Mercedes taxis, and street signs that seemed to be written in baby talk. I walked up the stairs of the bus, flopped into the front row of seats, and fell asleep. "Oh look" "Wow" Those who were awake had recognized the little town of Well, and I knew we were close. The bus dropped us off in front of a little brick bridge, and down the foggy path I ... read more

It's officially our last day at the castle! Tomorrow, we leave for London for a couple days, then on the 19th, we depart from Heathrow to Boston. Wow. I'm not going to make this a melodramatic entry, I promise. I just want to say thank you to everyone who was so supportive of my decision to study abroad, and thanks for missing me (I think). There have been so many things that have happened, changes that have occurred, friendships that have been made...unreal. This was the first semester when I really felt I was experiencing what college was all about, and I found that "family away from family" that I'd been looking for. So, as a little closing note, I compiled a list of my favorite things that have happened over here. Some of which you ... read more

I woke up at 11 today, which was really nice. I don't think I've done that in a long time. Not a lot this summer, anyway. Kelsey and I promptly padded downstairs to make sandwiches and take them back up to the room to eat them. I plowed into Taylor in the dining hall, who looked rather confused as to why I was leaving after I just got downstairs. I grunted something about not being presentable, and rushed upstairs; my growling tummy was not happy. I really wanted to climb back into bed after ingesting the delicious sandwich, but homework - and lots of it - beckoned. I managed to complete my World Drama assignment and more than half of my Euro Music assignment before having to get ready for class. After my four-hour ethics class ... read more
