Hello everyone. I would like to take this moment to dedicate this blog entry to Joyce, because it's her birthday in 5 days (the big 2-3! :)), and also because she would like to see my room. So here it is -- my room. Actually, it's a room I share with all the hostelers and couchsurfers, though we haven't had any of the latter as of yet. We've only had 3 hostelers so far -- 2 from Spain (I'm sorry, one from Spain and another from Catalonia, lol) and 1 from the States. Let's see...what's it like, here in Podgorica? Let's find out! For one thing, it's so DAMN COLD here. I'm afraid icicles will crystallize in my hair if I stick my nose out the window to the test the temperature. Seriously -- it gets ... read more

At the crack of dawn (8 AM in lazy-ass-student speak), Steve pokes his head into my room and announces that we're going to Budva today. Budva. My head still busy extricating itself from the realm of sleep, I could've sworn he told me that we're going to see the all mighty Buddha today. I don't care how many millions of Asians worship him -- I need my eight hours at all costs. Kaput. I squinted at him, hoping my serious case of bedhead would be sufficient enough to scare him away. It didn't. Man, what I wouldn't give for a few more minutes of la-la land. Turns out Budva's a seaside town situated on the west coast of Montenegro, meaning we were taking a little field trip today. Apparently he wanted me to meet some of ... read more

Greetings from Montenegro! Well its been a couple of days. I'll try to pick up where i left off.... we enjoyed one last night in serbia. stayed up pretty late chatting with the guys who run the hostel, talking about random stuff. One guy was telling us all about the NATO bombings in Belgrade in 1999. He was living in the city, and they had built all kinds of shelters underground in case bombing started. And so it did. apparantly a lot of the bridges in the country were destroyed and they figured those in belgrade were next. i think most survived, but they did start bombing certain buildings in teh city. he said you could see the missles coming up over the river then honing (is that really a word?) in on governmet buildings. the ... read more

Chapter 3- Montenegro “Far too much free beer” I was woken up again at about 3am. Another Serb guard, this one looked a lot like a James Bond henchman. He requested all our passports, and being the only non-Serb/Montenegrin passenger in the compartment I was of course the one who got interrogated. “You speak Serbian?” he asked. “No” (for some reason my school didn’t do a GCSE in Serbian. Not that that would have made much difference- I took a GCSE in German and I don’t speak a word of that) “Only English?” “Yes” (well, a little Norwegian too. Oh, and I can ask you to get me a beer in Serbian, but I don’t think you’re going to do that, are you?) “You are alone?” “Yes” (Wait a minute..I had twenty people with me a ... read more

Country number #20 of the trip and back in the EU.... sort of! Well they use the euro. Montenegro is the world's newest country after a referendum passed in 2006 to separate them from the union of Serbia & Montenegro. We took a bus from Dubrovnik to the town of Kotor, built on the largest inland fjord in Europe. The ride was beautiful as we wound our way down the coast from Croatia. There was an interesting whirlpool-like thing in the Bay of Kotor that looked like an underwater spring. The old town of Kotor was yet another pedestrian-only, walled Roman city (will it never end?). However, this one was quite unique as the wall was built straight up the mountain cliff immediately behing the city. On top of the cliff was an ancient Illyrian fortress ... read more

Took only about 45 minutes to get from Budva to Kotor. The arrival in town was quite dramatic for me, through mountain pass and out of it you immediately see the fjord! it was very cloudy and windy and when i got off at the bus station no one offered me rooms so i was forced to go to the old town about 1 km away, there was a green market going just outside of the fort, went in and looked around until i found Meridian Travel Agency according to LP is very helpful in finding accomodations. Jelena the lady who help me was very nice and booked me a single room right away in the old town 15 euros a night. Since my room is still being cleaned we chatted for a bit. She gave ... read more

The taxi driver in Tirana have family in Boston and have visited 3 times before so we had a good conversation about life in his country and how he still have no ambition to live with his parents in America, he hopes Obama wins. The Shkodra bus took a good 2 hours including delays due to bad traffic accident. When I arrived in Shkodra, taxi drivers immediately took notice of me and offering to take me to Ulcinj in Montenegro from 20 to 30 Euros, I pretended to be sight seeing and said will be back i have to think it over, these guys told me no bus goes to Ulcinj from Shkodra, i should have known better, i arrived at 230ish pm and the bus according to Ilir from Tirana backpackers, it leaves around 3pm, ... read more

Morrissey may well have written "Everyday is like Sunday" about the British seaside town, but he really should come to Montenegro in the off season. Nobody else does. Ulcinj, our first arrival point on managing to get out of Albania, is heaving with tourists from June until August, but in early October the only people about were the 10,000 townsfolk. Many shops, bars and cafes had closed for the winter. For the first time on the trip, we had nothing booked in advance, neither our transport from Albania or a bed for the night. But we were conspicuous with our backpacs and within minutes we had been sorted out with a private room in the detatched wing of a family home for four euros each. Congratulating ourselves, we roamed the tatty new town area and had ... read more

The next country on our journey was Montenegro, which is one of the newest contries in the world after it recently gained independence from Serbia. We were headed for Budva for 2 nights; Budva is the main tourist destination in Montengro and the Dalmatian coasts version of Ibiza. On the way we took a scenic drive along the Kotor Fiord and stopped for lunch in aptly named Kotor. Kotor was an unexpected highlight. It is a tiny little walled town set into the base of a steep cliff and on the shores of the fiord. It also has a mini version of the great wall of china running up the cliff to a church. As it was about 45 degress we decided not to venture up, but instead admired the view from the bottom. Once in ... read more
