After my university graduation in 2010, my parents gifted me with a present - a family travel to Montenegro. I did not even expect that they would congratulate me with the graduation in this way. Anyway, I was really happy, because it was my first journey to Europe. Our travel took a week, but it was a highly saturated week. First of all, we enjoyed to the full the local sights near out hotel in Przno town: the bay, small islands, crystal-clear Adriatic water, etc. We also managed to visit some cities (Budva, Kotor, and Tivat) and a village (Njeguši) in Montenegro. Moreover, we even went on an excursion to the most attractive city in Croatia - Dubrovnik. Montenegro is a wonderful country with its own unique culture and interesting history. Since the population of this ... read more

Another in a string of questionable titled-related puns, thus prompting me not to give up my day job just yet. Arriving in Budva instantly revealed a wholly different atmosphere from Dubrovnik, and with a plan of action already drawn up for this leg of the holiday, it looked upon first glance as though the stay at the commendable hotel Tatjana would provide a suitable base, both location- and facilities-wise. Budva comes across almost instantly as an up-and-coming resort, and the guide book's description of Budva as the coast's 'star turn' is not terribly far off the mark, especially when you consider its crop of tourist activities, and overall allure. The Old Town, for instance, is a highly attractive enclave of narrow streets and quaint shops, which also gives a reasonable insight into Montenegrin cities' old town ... read more

Decidimos nos ... read more

The bus from Dubrovnik to Kotor was a trip worth doing just for the views from the road teetering on the edge of the mountains along the coast of Croatia and then the breath taking and amazing bay of Kotor. We could have enjoyed it a bit more if our bus driver wasn't a crazy fool and didn't drive at ridiculous speeds around the hair pin bends on the cliffs over the sea. I think getting one of the many massive cruise ships to the bay would be the way to go as you would get to enjoy its splendor even more. As you get closer and closer to Kotor the mountains just keep getting bigger and steeper and the beauty is just out of this world. J and I couldn't believe our eyes and I ... read more

Itś the end of another wonderful day. More breathtaking scenery and sunny skies. It was close to 90 today, but we did not notice it much as there was shade and a breeze. The locals are complaining about the humidity, but they obviously do not know humidity. Kristie has admitted that this is worth the flight and said that Door County is now ruined for her. That gives you an idea of how gorgeous it all is. Mountains overlooking the sea and at times it is similar to fjiords. Eileen and Margaret took a boat to a man made island with an Orthodox church, while the rest of us rested and had refreshments. I asked our tour driver about the wildlife and as he spoke very little English I had to use sign language and sounds. ... read more

Eileen, May 27 Okay where do I start? We took a train for 10 hours from Belgrade to Bar arriving at 10:00 at night. Took two taxies to the town we were going to for our hostel and they drove 80 miles an hour around the curves and cliffs of the Adriatic sea. Jane was the trooper who found Smile, our Hostel owner who met us at the bus stop and guided us the rest of the way to a beautiful Hostel which is like a hotel. He took us to dinner at midnight to this outdoor bar and restaurant for pizza and beer. The train ride was so breathtakingly beautiful we thought we saw the best until we got around the next corner. Pictures can not record what we saw it will just have to ... read more

We arrived in Montenegro after a 12 hour bus trip. The scenery was breathtaking! Our car would be yammering away when we went through a tunnel and would be instantly silent when we popped out and saw the view. Each curve is more beautiful than the next and just when you are sure it can;t get any better, it does! (Excuse the punctuation this keyboard is nuts LOL) We stayed in a little hotel across the creek from the beach, that we finally got to after much craziness. We went to the beach, went swimming in what one of us called the Arctic Sea - it really wasnt all that bad! Yesterday we took a bus to Budva and are staying at Hippo Hostel. We are waiting on a bus for a day trip to Kotor ... read more

Europe » Montenegro » Podgorica April 14th 2010

I had no expectations when I rolled into the capital city of Podgorica (pop. 150,000). I’d never read a word about the city. I wanted it to be modern, I wanted it to be unique and, more than anything, I wanted it to have a market for selling motorbikes. It doesn’t really have one. It has a couple of potential methods, including listing the vehicle in the newspaper and talking to the folks at the motorcycle racing store. I’ll sell this thing for €300 if I have to, but I need to ditch it ASAP; I’m broke. I had created an elaborate lie to tell a dealership about trucking the scooter here from London, with a girlfriend and a job at her parents’ company that didn’t work out – this seemed more plausible than telling them ... read more

Europe » Montenegro » Niksic April 10th 2010

The long and winding road On a clear, cold April day, I loaded my well-worn companion Olivia and left Pljevlja for Montenegro’s second largest city, Niksic (pop. 75,000); it would have been nice to know I was driving in the wrong direction. After 25km, I “asked” the townsfolk in the village of Gradac (pop. 364) “which way to Niksic?” This elicited an amused round of laughter. By “asked,” I mean to say I pointed in each direction, and said “Niksic,” with an implied question mark on the end of the word. A fifty-year-old man with a single tooth and traditional handmade farmer’s clothes, seemed quite sure that I had indeed traveled the wrong direction. As much as my prideful self would have rather traveled around the planet in the other direction, my retreat was imminent. Durmitor ... read more
