Location: Budva, Kotor, Podgorica, Ulcinj Length of Stay: 4 Days Cost per Day: $65 A spoiled, snooty little brat... That's my opinion on Montenegro... Sorry if I come across as giving this place a hard time... Remember though its just my experience... perhaps I just caught everyone on a bad day or 4... Carrying along the Adriatic coastline south of Croatia... its more of the same prettiness... No doubt about it, a gorgeous coastline... but you know what... Looks only account for so much in the big scheme of things... I couldn't help feeling that the locals dont give 2 hoots about tourists visiting their country and in fact they would probably prefer it if you didn't come at all... You're just one mighty big interruption to their day... Aside from just a couple of positive ... read more

The original plan had to be changed. I had planed to first go to Sarajevo, than driving to Montenegro. Little problem, no rental company at Frankfurt Airport will rent you a car...to drive in Bosnia and Montenegro. You could still drive in these countries with your rented car....but then, no insurance....better not have any issue with the car. So I was not going to try my luck in Montenegro. Croatia and Montenegro have not always been the best neighbours in the world, so there doesn't seem to be that many public transport links bewteen the two countries. So we went on a tour group. Let me confirm...I'm not a fan of tour groups...and most of the time if I was in one in the past...it was as the tour guide! But we truly wanted to see ... read more

"Kotor is one of the great undiscovered places in the world. Montenegro is a beautiful secret!" With the heading of this blog entry we did just like Ringo Starr did in 1967, we took a little help from a friend. (Hope you don't mind us quoting you, Peter...). It is very true that Kotor is a wonderful place that is yet to be discovered by tourists in general and that Montenegro is a underestimated travel destination. The first week of our vacation we spent mainly in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. You can read about what we did there in the previous three blog entries. The second week we spent in Montenegro. We decided to rent a car during these days so that we could travel around more and hopefully visit places that are off the ... read more

Rano odkrylismy kolejne zalety naszej lokalizacji. I przebojowe powidla sliwkowe - porownywalne do tych, ktore robi mama Asi.

Zdaza sie rowniez babcia - wszyscy wytaczaja sie z Mer ... read more

O 6.00 rano wybudzila nas z gorskiej ciszy rabanka z zapamietaniem puszczana przez naszego gospodarza, ktory juz zaczal oporzadzac swoj bar. Dolina cala jeszcze byla w cieniu i na zewnatrz namiotu bylo zimniej niz w srodku. Ugotowalismy wode, zaparzylismy herbate, zjedlismy sucharki (ktore poprzedniego rana u Binaka wzbudzily zazdrosc Szwajcarow, az im musialam dac pare z dzemem) i wyruszylismy okrezna droga do Szkodry, co - wedlug roznych zrodel - mialo nam zabrac od 4 do 7 godzin. Droga - bez zadnych znakow i przyklejona do skaly - prowadzila wzdluz gorskich strumieni o blekitnej wodzie i brzegach wysypanych bialym kamieniem, przez zielony tunel drzew, male wioski, ubogie pola. Zabralismy na stopa pana, ktory w innym wypadku moglby na autobus czekac 2 dni. Caly czas bardzo trzesie i gdy dojezdzamy do miasta, mamy na jakis czas dosc off-road'u. ... read more

Thursday 17 June 2010 Km so far: 2265 Easy day today. Went kayaking for an hour on the lake, then swimming. The water is lovely, quite salty and the perfect temperature. Drove 10km up the lake to Perast for lunch and to see the small Venetian town. Late afternoon and early evening reading, swimming, enjoying this fantastic location. ... read more

Wednesday 16 June 2010 Km so far: 2243 Explored Mostar, doing a circuit of the town centre in 33 degrees. It is a place of contrasts. The area around the Old Bridge is very beautiful but dominated by stalls selling very similar souvenirs but there are also lovely shady cafes including a really trendy place in a cave on the east side of the river that we had completely failed to explore the previous evening. Only a few hundred yards away there remain shells of buildings devastated by the war, including the Neretna Hotel that stands by the Neretna River just upstream from the Old Bridge. Left late afternoon for the 230 km drive to Dobrota. As we approached the coast the countryside flattened out and became much more open. We approached the Croatian border with ... read more

Monday,14 June 10 Km so far: 1884 Left Kolasin this morning and headed northwest into the Tara Gorge National Park. We drove parallel to the beautiful Tara River before we entered the park but then as we ascended the scenery became more and more spectacular. As we rounded a bend the Tara Gorge bridge came into view, an elegant concrete structure spanning the 1300 metre deep gorge, the deepest in Europe and 2nd deepest in the world after the Grand canyon. Also the 7th highest bungee jump in the world and we watched as someone was being winched back up having made the leap of faith in big elastic bands. Crossed this off the list of things to do before I die. Drove northwest now towards the Durmator National Park, but missed a turning and ended ... read more

The train ride from Belgrade to Podgorica was pretty interesting. I sat in a room with 4 other people who didn’t speak any English while listening to Serbian folk music. This was fine with me for a while because I could put on my headphones and rest assured that no one would bother me while I got some work done. However, a little over halfway through the other passengers in my room got bored, I guess, and started asking me questions in Serbian. I, of course, didn’t know how to answer, but that didn’t stop them from trying anyway. Three of them were in their 50s, but one of them was an 18-year-old boy, who spoke very little English. So the 3 older people started bugging this poor kid, who couldn’t have cared less about who ... read more
