Montenegro is a beautiful many-mountained country with a gorgeous coast-line. If like me you hadn't heard of this country prior to Casino Royal, thats because it's only been an independent country since 2006 and was the newest country in the world prior to Kosovo declaring independence in 2008. I was based at the Hippo Hostel in Budva for the week, about half way up the coast where it's easy to travel to everywhere else in the country within a few hours: Ulcinj near the Albanian border is 2 hours away; Sveti Stefan was a 2hour walk and then a 15min bus ride back; Kotor is 30 minutes on the bus. Kotor Bay is the 2nd biggest fjord in the world with some stunning views especially after a walk up the 1000+ steps of the old city ... read more

With the Kosova Constitution Day holiday, Deb, Jane, Cate, and I decided to be adventurous, rent a car, and drive to Budva, Montenegro for some sun, sand, and seafood. Since all the vehicles here, or the majority at any rate, are manual instead of automatic, this gave us pause, but, luckily for us, Cate is an expert stick-shift driver. We cruised out of Prishtina right after school on Friday the 8th and headed south. We made it through Kosova fine, but ran into trouble almost as soon as we entered Albania. Imagine that you are going on a road trip. You have your map, snacks, clothes for the weekend. Your car is full or friends and laughter. Every time the road turns or splits or divides you see, as you would expect, road signs telling you ... read more

Dubrovnik It never ceased to amaze me that I can travel "alone" & yet never really be alone!! mostly I see this as a blessing... though, there were times that I truly cherished my 'alone time'--- Dubrovnik gave me that after a loooong time of travelling with others.... well at least for one day it did.. haha!! Ola, Ange and I split up in Barcelona... Ola headed for the only corner of Spain she hadn't seen yet - the north-west part; Ange flew to Belgrade to meet up with Effie & Dragan who were travelling in Montenegro from Australia; and I flew to Dubrovnik to mee Ange & co 2 days later... If taking a cheap flight from Spain, its common to fly Vueling Airlines - despite their many strikes & known delays :p I found ... read more

in the coastal town of montenegro they can't/won't help with buses to pristina, kosovo. so i hopped a bus to podgorica the capitol of montenegro. once there i found a night bus to pristina but i wanted to go today. only one bus they tell me. my experience tells me that closer to the border there are more buses, so i hop next bus to berane which was mentioned the day before by some fellow travelers. in berane they tell me only a 0030 bus, which is the same one from podgorica, so i decide to head to the border at rozaye. i buy a ticket but the bus that was there a moment ago has left, EARLY!!!! so i am stuck in berane for 5 hours awaiting a bus. a day later, i met a ... read more

We got up early this morning for the five hour drive to Montenegro. We were headed for an ancient fortress in the hills in Kotor. It was pouring down rain and the drive was very slow but the views were beautiful. The Montenegran coast line was scattered with little old villages and churches. In the middle of the bay there is a very old Cathedral and Monastary on two small man made islands. The islands took over 200 years to make and they made them by sinking over 130 ships filled with stone. Once in Kotor we found our hotel and took advantage of the break in the down pour to climb up to the fortress. There are over 1500 steps from the base to the fortress on the mountain. We got halfway, where there is ... read more

Once in Montenegro I sat back and let Jon take control of things - he had the Lonely Planet guide to Eastern Europe whereas mine was only a PDF on my lap top so he did the reading and I took a back seat. I had two ambitions upon arriving in Montenegro, first up was getting to a beach and second was to find out about Montenegro, one of the newest countries in Europe. Jon chose wisely on the beach front. We caught a bus up the coast to a place called Sveti Stefan and what a place! A former fishing village on a island has now been converted into an exclusive hotel - and is now connected by a causeway. It is a beautiful view - but somehow it’s too well restored and the bright ... read more

From Bosnia and Herzegovina i went once again to Croatia to the much talked about Dubrovnik. an incredible city full of perfectly restored buildings and saturated in history, only slightly spoiled by the hoards of package holiday makers swarming everywhere. i made the narrow winding mountain road into Montenegro in a 16 wheeler lorry - a ride which proved very frightening every time we had to reverse and edge next to the cliff whenever there was an oncoming truck. it was here in the peaceful and non touristic town of Kotor i met Audrey from America, and we ended up hitchhiking together for about a week. we made it through the mountains to a small village where we camped in a secluded spot by the river. it was really scary hearing wolves howling not too far ... read more

Balconies en masse When we were in Kotor we walked through the streets of the Old Town and we were surprised over how many different styles of balconies they had in town. We started taking photos of them and the more we looked for them the more interesting it became. After an hour or so we had quite a collection of photos of balconies. When we started this blog in 2006 the main purpose was to make it possible for us to upload photos and make them available to our friends and relatives. We find the collection of photos of the many balconies in Kotor to be quite interesting and now, staying true to the original purpose of this blog, we make them available to you. We hope you enjoy these photos as much as we ... read more

Montenegro - in the mountains and along the coast We continue our story from Montenegro where we left off in the previous blog entry, with Durmitor National Park. By the way, doesn't the name "Durmitor" sound funny? It doesn't sound like the name of a national park, does it? It sounds like a lot of things but not like a national park. Allow us to give a few examples of what we mean. "Durmitor" could be an evil character from a really bad action movie from 1989. Durmitor the Evil says with a deep voice: "I am Durmitor, Master of the Universe. I hereby declare the Earth to be conquered." "Durmitor" could be a place in Lord of the Rings: Frodo: "We have to travel to Mount Doom in the middle of Durmitor because it is ... read more

I have been asked by my beloved husband, to lose some precious hours of night sleep, for the purpose of writing a blog entry that deals with traveling with two bundles of joy. Instead, since Ariel wakes up every two hours at night to have some yummy mommy-milk, I intend to go to sleep and let these lines write themselves. Even before Ariel was born, we knew we will have this trip with him. I was shocked the first time Yaron started talking about this trip. It was after the first Ariel’s ultrasound. I had 8 more months to digest this idea. Getting ready for any trip is difficult but this time it was the most difficult. Trying to think of all the things Liya will need and than trying to imagine the things Ariel will ... read more
