my room!
my first night here! Isaac slept on the mattress next to my bed. Hello everyone. I would like to take this moment to dedicate this blog entry to Joyce, because it's her birthday in 5 days (the big 2-3! 😊), and also because she would like to see my room. So here it is -- my room.
Actually, it's a room I share with all the hostelers and couchsurfers, though we haven't had any of the latter as of yet. We've only had 3 hostelers so far -- 2 from Spain (I'm sorry, one from Spain and another from Catalonia, lol) and 1 from the States.
Let's see...what's it like, here in Podgorica? Let's find out!
For one thing, it's so DAMN COLD here. I'm afraid icicles will crystallize in my hair if I stick my nose out the window to the test the temperature. Seriously -- it gets to below freezing in the evening, and God forbid what it feels like with the wind chill added to the mix.
I'd rather stay inside during the evening, thank you.
It snowed the other day -- imagine my childlike excitement, not having seen snowfall since I was six years old. And I was able to do something I haven't done
my room again!
now it's been converted to work space... in over 15 years: catch a snowflake on my tongue! If it weren't for my blood solidifying from the cold, I would stayed outside long enough to sneak in a snow angel or two.
Let's face it: 15 years of heat conditioning has rendered me into a creature that can only tolerate a selective range of temperatures.
Ooh! Let me take you to the market where I sometimes buy my groceries. I'm lucky that Steve's hostel is right on the edge of downtown, where everything is within a few blocks' reach -- now that I can handle, haha.
The journey to get food begins with a perilous crossing of a two-way street. I kid you not, if you don't coordinate your steps carefully enough, you might find yourself missing a limb or two by the time you reach the other side!
Downtown is surprisingly more upscale than I expected -- like, everyone here is wearing at least a very nice coat and a pair of boots. It's pretty common to see someone with a mink coat walking about! I guess Montenegrins take their winter garb seriously.
As I make my through the bustling crowds, I

view of the hostel before snowfall... have learned to expect the slew of curious stares -- mostly from old men, who look like they've never laid eyes on a Chinese, which oddly enough comprise the majority of the world population. Haha, go figure.
The younger locals like to try their English on me (which is quite good) by calling out "Hello Chinese!" as I pass by, much to my amusement. Sometimes a "Konnichiwa" or "Ni hao" might get thrown in as well.
But actually, there appears to be a few Chinese people living here in Podgorica (I saw one the other day...imagine my excitement! :D I think I scared the poor girl off, though). I was told that they own a ton of boutiques (butik kina) and the only Chinese restaurant in town. In fact, I found this restaurant the other day, and I vow to eat there before I leave!!
It certainly is a different world over here. I drew in a few stares back in Houston, but in Podgorica, I might as well be the three-headed llama from all the random attention I get!
And by the way, I may be taller than the average Asian girl, but here...I'm pretty
SNOW
...and after! much midget-sized. It seems that all the women here could pass for leggy supermodels -- I think their legs alone take up half my visual scope! It's like walking amongst a whole Amazon tribe of Xena look-a-likes...man...O_O
Men here are typically at the very least 6 feet tall with dark hair and eyes, whereas the women are on average probably about 5' 9" with dark hair and either dark or light eyes. Blondes are quite rare here, but not unusual.
Gah! No wonder I stick out like such a sore thumb, lol!
This wraps up a more mundane entry on my life here in Podgorica. More later...on FOOD.
AND, if you see Joyce on the 27th (that's a Friday!), wish her a happy birthday! 😊
Cao!

Your pictures look pretty (I know how you feel about the freezing cold). And the other Steve says hi!
