When I first came up with the idea of the Malta trip, it won't come as a great surprise that the possible football was an integral part of the advance planning. I was reading an excellent article about groundhopping Malta by the man from The Ball is Round website and the guy knows a thing or two about obscure football in the far corners. The BOV - Bank of Valletta to give it the full title - Premier League in Malta was recorded as having the 2nd worst average attendance in Europe. It seems a bit harsh and is partially down to nobody having a clue who goes to football in Andorra and the fact that Litchtenstein clubs play somewhere in the Swiss league system. Anyway, there it was in black and white - average attendance ... read more

There is a Store Where The Creatures Meet. A line from a Doors song and a not so well known football fanzine of old ......... Saint Mirren, if you're interested. I am not sure whether fanzines ever took off in Malta, but Hibernians could have done worse than "There is a Bar Where the Flies Meet". It is not far from their ground. We'll come back to that later. The day had started in more select surroundings. The weather forecast must have been on the up and the hotel staff had laid the tables for breakfast on the terrace. Sliema harbour looked picture perfect. The swell of the previous day had subsided. It was flat calm. The boats bobbed gently on the mirror like water. Benefits Britain were once more in evidence and stocked up on ... read more

Malta in December. This would be our version of warm weather training! As a change to freezing ourselves somewhere in Eastern Europe, a few days on a sunny Mediterranean island would be just the order of the day. There would be no significant language barrier, no chance of a game being off due to weather and presumably no complicated membership scheme to hinder our route to a ticket. The previous month in Poland had dimmed our enthusiasm for another cold weather excursion. At half the price of the intended destination in Bulgaria, the Man in the Middle instantly gave the wildcard choice a big fat “yes” even though it meant he had to sacrifice a night of sleep to get down to Gatwick Airport. The level of shut eye was further diminished by a far too ... read more

Religion has been the most significant influence throughout Malta’s history, and the most important contributing events were the attempted expansion of the Turkish empire, and the rise of the Knights of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, who were prominent during the Crusades. They arrived in Malta by sea in 1530 after the Turks expelled them from Rhodes. They added greatly to Malta’s church legacy, so that today there are some 350 churches on the two islands of Malta and Gozo. Most are Roman Catholic, but there is no official state religion. In this tiny country you can marvel at five centuries in the evolution of church design and decor. The Capital City of Valletta: At least two of its many churches merit special attention. Most historically significant is St. John’s co-cathedral, built by the ... read more

Geo: 35.87, 14.4After yesterdays action packed, sun fueled, sightseeing day, we decided to embrace the typical Sunday spirit and have a rather relaxing day. With this in-mind we decided to venture to Medina and Rabat - Medina being the old capital of Malta and Rabat being the more recent suburb. According to Wikipedia, Medina has a population of just 300 whilst Rabat has 11,000 inhabitants. After first boarding a bus to the rather more lively Buggiba, we found ourselves running to get our connecting bus and not quite sure where we'd be getting off. First stop was Medina. A small medieval walled town on top of a hill in the center of the Island. A bit like Lucca, Italy with the exception of sunshine rather than rain and houses in the place of shops. Medina was ... read more

Geo: 35.8997, 14.5147Boarding an old Arrive bus, not a bendy one though, they were short-lived here and have made their way to the bus graveyard, we made our way down to Sliema and then Valletta. I'd describe Sliema as the cosmopolitian side of Malta. Think new apartment complexes, a large shopping mall and general chain stores (M&S!). Here is also the main tourist ferry and bus departure zone. After struggling in the heat and Chris using his diplomatic skills to bargain a 1 1/2 hour trip around Valetta harbour, we set sail. This tour was one of the best attractions in Malta, being full of historical information and close ups of every tributary and both The Grand Harbour and Marsamext Harbour. Many ships from both Africa and Asia use(d) Valletta as an opportunity to rest, shelter ... read more

Geo: 36.0722, 14.2358This morning was yet another very early start as we wanted to beat the crowds to the Blue Lagoon - a sheltered inlet in the tiny island of Comino, halfway between Malta and Gozo. After having traveled south all week, we decided to use our location near the ferry port to our advantage. Up, fed and out to the port we went. Not having done any research we were fairly surprised to see boats to Comino and Gozo leaving from 3 different locations; we were just expecting the one. We decided to carry on with our original plan and hopped on a boat heading to Comino at 9:10am. As we'd come to expect in Malta, the beach was practically non-existent. Instead we hired a sunbed to dump our stuff and then slid down the ... read more

Malta 2012 A february trip to Malta, this was my first holiday with my new partner Pete ;) The weather wasn't great at this time of year (coldest feb in years apparently lol :p ) but we still had a great time. We stayed in Qawra and travelled by bus around the island. I would reccomend Marsaxlokk, it's a beautiful port town in the south east. We also travelled to Gozo, a small island just off of Malta, only a short ferry ride away and with lots of gorgeous scenery. A highlight of our trip was trying the traditional dish of Rabbit for the first time. Very delicious :) ... read more

Geo: 35.9564, 14.3622First day and after a fairly relaxed start we found ourselves braving the 40oC plus heat and headed into Mellieha - an old, traditional Maltese town on the north-east coast of the island. Mellieha is one of the quieter towns in Malta, no wild nights for us here, but it's famous and popular for having the biggest sandy beach in what is, a predominately rocky island. Head north and you'll find delicious cafes and restaurants. Head south and you'll find good cocktails, sand and beautiful sea. It was a hard choice so we decided to start in the middle at the Mellieha Air Raid Shelters. Run by a man whose uncle fought in the war, we headed underground to see a long network of tunnels and rooms dug by the Maltese to escape the ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! So, our time in Malta has come to an end and it's time to sum up this experience. First off I can say that I really like Malta, it has a lot of similarities with Cyprus which I also really enjoyed. Still, Malta has quite some nice things to offer which I haven't seen elsewhere, such as the impressive Megalithic Temples. Some of the oldest structures in the world can be found here and the whole island pulsates with history! The locals are friendly and easy to approach and English is, as expected, a prevalent language so communication is easy. We spoke to several locals during our trip and they were all very eager to help us out and talk about their culture and religion in a good and calm manner which ... read more
