Although we had planned to do a walking tour of Bucharest on our last day there, we’d already seen all the sights listed on the tour so decided to skip it. Instead, Ma and I went for a walk around our neighbourhood including Parcul Cişmigiu. Lovely park with a small lake in the middle..,maybe more of a pond, but big enough for row boats. Super chill with lots of folks sitting around enjoying the scenery.
My favourite part of Bucharest was the Village Museum and further afield it was Bran Castle. As lovely as Romania has been, I am looking forward to moving on to Malta. For a change of pace from all these hotels, we rented an apartment in Valetta right in the heart of all the old timey stuff we want to see. Plus, the apt has a laundry machine. I’m soooo down for that. No more hand washing!
Early to bed because we have a painfully early flight in the morning. Urgh.
Day 17 To get to Malta we had a stop over in Austria. The Vienna Airport was big and clean and our Air Austria flight left a few minutes early and the flight
streets of Valletta
How is it possible that everything is uphill? time was less than planned so we arrived ahead of schedule. Great flight. Thumbs up, Austria. I truly love such magnificent efficiency. From there, we flew Air Malta to...guess?
We arrived in Valetta in the early afternoon and holy crisp (my iPhone auto corrected “crap” to “crisp” but I find it so funny, I’m totally using that from now on) is it ever a) insanely gorgeous and b) butt-numbingly hilly. Ma and ma tante were immediately out the door exploring while I rested off a headache in our cute new digs. We had gotten up at 4:45am to get our flight and I absolutely suffered for it. I am sooooo not a morning person. 7am, fine. Any earlier and I can barely function. My brain was probably punishing me with a headache for having the nerve to make it work before sunrise. Stupid brain.
Later, we took an evening stroll through the town to a fancy grocery store for some provisions (I got yogurt, fruit, biscuits, crisps, olives, fancy cheese, butter and some sugary beverages for about 17 euros) and the others got other nom noms. It was too late to grab a baguette (they were sold out
that late in the day) so we’ll venture out early to grab one for breakfast. Tonight we just snacked on our provisions on #1 of *two* terraces in our apartment.
I threw caution to the wind and indulged myself with some fancy laundry-doin’. I may have been too excited to do laundry in a machine because I mistakenly chose the “heavy” setting and it took over an hour to wash one load. I got it figured out, but holy crisp were my clothes ever clean. I also accidentally ran the spin cycle twice because I couldn’t figure out how to open the door despite having downloaded the machine instructions. Sigh. Residual brain punishment I’m sure.
Tomorrow the sightseeing begins! On the schedule: Mdina and Rabat.
