... read more

It was to be another exciting adventure on the buses today, this time a lot further away, so the two Euros each will be even better value. We were heading for Mdina, which is close to the centre of Malta. After an hour deciphering the Malta bus routes (slight exaggeration) we worked out that any of routes 50, 51, 52, 53 or 56 would get us there and they left from a whole another set of bus stops round the corner from the main area. We went round there and waited for which ever route arrived first. It was a 52. Whilst Valletta itself is quite small and compact, the built-up, urban sprawl that surrounds it is surprisingly large. At a guess I'd say it almost covers a quarter of the island. The only slight downside ... read more

We all went our own ways on the final day. The Other Half and I headed to the Silent City, Mdina. The silence was deafening. Cars are banned in the main from the old walled town and this morning the horse drawn buggys were all redundant. There would not even be the sound of hooves on the cobbles to break the silence. I was keen that the Other Half should see the fortress town high on a hill. We headed through the Mdina Gate in to the town. The weather had been mixed in terms of visibility whilst we had been on the island, but you could see for miles this morning. I took us in the direction of the previous vantage point for a view towards Valletta. A sign on the walls warns of danger. ... read more

Louis picks us up from the hotel again. We're learning; this time we don't wait outside on the road, so buses and taxis don't stop for us and we don't manage to make any drivers angry. We drive along the main road along the north coast. We pass a roundabout which is still being constructed. It looks a bit odd; the only road going in and out of it is the one we're on. Louis explains that while they were constructing the main road they found some ancient archaeological ruins right in the middle of where it was supposed to go. The solution was to build a roundabout, so that the the ruins will now be under the roundabout rather than the road. If that wasn't going to be costly enough, it was right at the ... read more

When I first came up with the idea of the Malta trip, it won't come as a great surprise that the possible football was an integral part of the advance planning. I was reading an excellent article about groundhopping Malta by the man from The Ball is Round website and the guy knows a thing or two about obscure football in the far corners. The BOV - Bank of Valletta to give it the full title - Premier League in Malta was recorded as having the 2nd worst average attendance in Europe. It seems a bit harsh and is partially down to nobody having a clue who goes to football in Andorra and the fact that Litchtenstein clubs play somewhere in the Swiss league system. Anyway, there it was in black and white - average attendance ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! Today has been most interesting and entertaining! Rabat and old Mdina have quite some nice things to offer a historical buff such as myself. The bus to Rabat took us about 40 minutes but you get to see a lot of Malta on the way so it's not a dull ride. As you roll into Rabat you do so right by the historical city of Mdina, it's surrounded by high walls with the red dome of the Saint Paul's Cathedral crowning above them. We started in the Roman Villa which is a newly built house in Roman style that stands on top of, and works as a museum of, an old Roman Villa with quite some exquisite mosaics preserved, other than that there isn't that much to see there though so we ... read more

What a great day of sight seeing!!! I went to bed at 8 pm last night, and had a wake up call for 6 am (why???). Slept in until 7:30. Got my gear together and headed for the old town of Valletta just a few blocks away. I opted out ot the expensive hotel buffet breakfast and got an ok "ham roll" from the street vendors for one euro. First stop was the Cathedral in the center of Valletto (main town, walkable). I found it last evening on my 4 hour "walk of the lost." I had a map but somehow I ended up at every end of the town except mine! (My great uncle Walter Williams said: "If you have a tongue in your head and money in your pocket, you can go anywhere." Sunday morning was up to a rough start. The plan was to meet Jackie, a colleague of mine who works in Central Admissions, at the main gate around 9am. She was going to take me to the fishing village of Marsaxlokh. Well...that didn't happen, and I slept through my alarm, getting up at 10:17. I will need to somehow make this up to her...Anyway, I had booked a taxi transfer at 10:30am so I basically threw all of my crap into my bags and booked it downstairs to check out. The trip to St. Julian's, which I had done both prior nights, was quick enough and I was back at the George hotel in maybe 20 minutes. This would be a major upgrade and is the fanciest hotel I've stayed in on my own. Thanks, EC! ... read more

Today is Saturday and we went to Mdina and Rabat by way of Valletta. After visiting Valletta on Wednesday, we realised we only had a few shots of the old Royal Opera House. We came to take some shots of the ruins, just inside the city gates before we headed off to Mdina on the bus. Even this week, there has been a bit of debate in the Times of Malta about the rebuilding of this structure. Very much an ongoing debate here in Malta. The Triton Fountain outside the gates was also working as well. We finished a few things in Valletta and then headed to Mdina on the bus. On the way we passed an impressive row of arches which we finally realised was an aqueduct built by Grand Master Wignacourt back in the ... read more
