Geo: 41.12, 20.82An exciting city tour of Tirana awaited us this morning!! We drove from our beautiful hotel along the main boulevard of Tirana, the street of the Martyrs of the country through Mother Teresa square and stopped in Skanderberg Square. Along this main street, built by the Italians during their brief ownership of the country in the 30s, most of the main buildings are situated. We passed the President's palace, the parliament building, the University and some other government buildings. The Main square, Skanderberg is named after a hero of the 15th century and there is a massive statue to him there. There are also many ugly buildings, remnants of the Communist regime of Hoxha in the 60s and after. The traffic is chaotic and I was most amused watching policemen with batons trying to ... read more

The bus got into Skopje at 545am. I had to change bus and the bus to Ohrid left just pass 6am. Got into Ohrid at 945am. At the bus station an elderly gentleman asked me if I was looking for accommodation and I said yes. He was riding a bicycle so we walked to his house which was a 10 minute walk from the bus station. He said he can give me a room with an attached bathroom for Euros 15 per night and a room without an attached toilet for Euro 15 a night. Vesna from Belgrade told me I should check-out Apartment Kosta as it is in the city centre and near the lake. I told him I will check apartment Kosta and come back, he tried to do a better deal by saying ... read more

Upon arrival in Ohrid I was quite surprised by what I found. I had read a bit about this town and the lake, how it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site full of ancient buildings and how the Cyrillic alphabet was invented here in the ninth century AD. I had also seen a lot of photographs, nearly all of a little church sitting on a cliff above a deep blue lake. Well that is only half the story. Tacked on to the side of the old town is a lively modern resort. There are lots of restaurants, bars, cafes, shops, banks, everything you need. There are a few tall hotels and apartment blocks but they don’t really bring the place down. In fact it is a nice contrast with the quiet cobbled streets of the old ... read more

Yes you can judge by the title that Lex is in completely recovered health... otherwise it would be something more serious!! Unfortunately just Ez here again as the internet was down at the internet cafe (comeon... what kinda internet cafe has net that goes down!!) and lex got a bit tired and headed off for bed! As i was saying... she made it through (with the help of a few wee pills called painkillers - marvels of modern science!) as she was in intense pain and we had a few sleepless nights and worried moments! Still not sure on what it was or what the cause was (though Zoki maintains it was sitting on coldstones which she did for all of a minute on a hot day!) Macedonians national sport seems to be: feeling cold and ... read more

Sept 27th--After a long trainride to Thessaloniki in northern Greece, one night in a cheap and kind of dirty hostel, and another early morning train, we arrived in Macedonia. Our main reason for visiting this country was to visit two of Heidi's friends, Kelley and Laura**, who are in the Peace Corps here. Kelley had just arrived so we only had a few hours to see her during her training, but we spent the rest of the week with Laura, staying at her apartment in Prilep a few days, then down to Ohrid, a beautiful little town on a lake. Macedonia was really our first experience of feeling completely out of our comfort zone. There were no other tourists around, no one spoke or understood English (well, a few could speak very broken words), and we ... read more

SEXA PLANT While travelling in Venezuella, when I first encountered the extreme unreliability of the locals in developing countries, I invented the SEXA PLANT (MINA TZEMACH) method of orienting: before each turn-about I take, I ask 10 locals, and do complex calculations, which weights their age, gender, look and size of breast (in case the gender is "female"). The map (if I have any) is not weighted much more than 2 old men in these calculation- I think that instead of using expensive means such as sattelites photos, these countries simply pay expressionist artists for drawing their topographical maps. But when I rode from Sophia to Aleko, all the locals had the same answer, when I asked them on the way: "up". And they were right. This place was simply "up" - the highest you can ... read more

well after listening to my mother scream in my ear about not calling/emailing/updating before we got cut off, i suppose its time for an update. i did try the other day, but the connection at this place sucked really bad so i just left... basically i'm an adopted member of the family here in ohrid. we sit and sip coffee, smoke cigarettes, watch balkan music videos, eat home-cooked meals, etc. etc. life is pretty good, albeit slow compared to anything i'm used to. my second day here i awoke to coffee waiting for me at the breakfast table. 'mom' asked me if i was up for going to the beach with anamaria (16) and her friend maria (17). i figured what the hell, so basically for the rest of the day i chilled on the beach ... read more

well i certainly am happy to be out of skopje. parts of it were really cool, but overall i just felt unsafe and being alone certainly didn't help...probably the best part was being able to sit in my room in my underwear in front of the air conditioner... this morning i was a weirdo and was up and out of my room by 9 to explore what i could in skopje before noon. the main center square, ploshtad makedonija, is really cool and lined with cafes and shops and whatnot, but i think i already told you that. i continued up across kamen most into the old part of the city, which apparently is also the albanian part of the city. the turkish influence basically slaps you across the face...i visited the national art gallery which ... read more

Who fears from the sunset?
