I've just had a wonderful time at a meeting of some Rugute families this evening. Most especially some of the children playing Lithuanian instruments and some pictures they painted for us. My contribution, following the chicken soup and some cakes was to organise the football and then finally be on the winning side of the Basketball. We all had a great evening though I was smarting from the 94 miles and the sunburn on my legs, I obviously didn't get the sunblock in time!... read more

Had a great journey getting to Panavezys. Much easier going and the weather is great (need to get some sunblock!). Large open country with lots of Storks and gentle rolling hills. If you are staying in Ukmerge then I would recommend the Big Stone - great service and lovely food. We are eating in Katpedele and have just had some pizzas - yummy! Off to Siauliai now.... read more

Very early start 2:30am! Everything went relatively smoothly at airports though there was a definite OMG moment when the luggage conveyor stopped and we were the only ones waiting for our gear...10 minutes later and we were sorted. Two straps broken and a small hole in my bike bag. Had a great welcome from over 20 people outside the Barclays building, Green Hall and managed to get all the bikes set up in record time. A few speeches and a quick pizza lunch and we were off. A couple of the Lithuanians joining us took us through Vilnius on the cycle routes which were a little bumpy and I was desperate for the open road...we had a full escort in the form of a car in the front driven my colleague Vitas and a van driven ... read more

Okay, so we landed at Vilnius International airport at 13:15, 30 minutes later than planned. Not an issue with WizzAir, more a problem with Luton's ground crew. Never mind, such is life. After waiting for ages for our bikes to arrive at luggage reclaim we had almost dispaired of them ever turning up. Then the last three bags came off, our lovely bikes. Dragging our bikes along we staggered out of the airport to be met by Vitas, Gintaras and Vija, our colleagues from Barclays. They had a arranged plenty of transportation and shipped us effortlessly to Green Hall, our starting point. This was where we had our first surprise, a crowd of staff, their families and (it turned out) Rugute families were waiting to great us, together with more Camera and Camcorder wielding folk than ... read more

Another whole day of travel later, some of it thankfully on a sleeper train, and we arrive at Vilnius, Lithuania. I was curious about Lithuania as it's got a rich history going all the way back to the 11th century. I'd heard a bit about this from a Lithuanian guy that I worked with in London, who also happened to be one of the most badass & stereotypical hacker dudes I've ever met. Inbetween chain smoking and chugging down energy drinks, and stories about his impressive yet questionable cyber exploits, he would also tell me how proud he was to be from Lithuania, once the “most powerful country in Europe”. It's unfortunate that our time was cut short here by the extensive train travel the previous day, as it looked like an interesting place to explore. ... read more

We arrive into Vilnius about a day after we expected due to being forced onto an 18-hours train expedition, instead of a simple overnight coach. In the process we had picked up a strange guy from Belgium who followed us from the train. He started off by saying “he didn’t know where he was staying”, and then after following us to our accommodation, said ‘oh, this is exactly what I was looking for” hmmm... But we managed to loose him and were happy to be here, in what already looks like a quaint city. We decided to reward ourselves with a nice dinner at one of the prominent restaurants in the old town; enjoying the warm evening air and a lovely bottle one wine (once we found one that they did actually stock!). Feeling like we ... read more

9 hours pass and we're standing in the freezing cold of Lithuania's capital, Vilnius. The bus journey was OK but only for the boys as Faye and I gave up our seats and sat on the floor so that they could lie across them. Grumpy, tired adults are fine as they don't tend to be too vocal, kids on the other hand turn into absolute monsters if they don't get enough sleep, so it seemed the logical approach. It did highlight a big difference between Nate and Gabe though. We didn't catch the bus till 8.30pm which is way past their bed time, Nate was fine with this, thriving on the chaos that surrounds organising oneself for a long journey, Gabe on the other hand was just getting more and more pissed off that he hadn't ... read more

BOO YA! I'd been home seven months people said I'd be straight back on the plane looking for a new adventure dreaming of the ozzie babes, beaches and the care-free lifestyle, I won't lie it crossed my mind, teaching in South Korea for easy money exploring the new cultures of the east Japan, China, wherever, and carrying on the rolling stone lifestyle was a definite pull! But it wasn't real there is only so long you can ignore your head and listen to the crazy heart. Don't get my wrong I'm not done, nowhere near, just setting down some markers for a while. It took me six months a lot of reminiscing, feeling sorry for myself in bed, hours on call of duty but the turn of the new year I finally got to grips with reality. ... read more

Enjoing the price”war” on internet, we stumbled over some crazy cheap airplane tickets going to Palanga, Lithuania. Costing us only NOK 2,- (about 30 cent usd) pr.person we just had to go for it! Palanga is one of Lithuanias main tourist destination during summer with its 18 km long sandy beach, hip party places and cafes and restaurants at every corner. But that’s summer time......... we vent there in January and only a couple of hotels and restaurants was open. Going to Lithuania in January, we expected the same temperatures and weather as in Norway, and were correct; lots of snow and around minus 10 degrees Celsius! Since the sandy beach was covered in hard packed snow it kind of made a walkway for the few tourists and the locals. And in splendid sunshine and blue ... read more

"What's screech wobble then?", asked the security clerk at Gatwick Airport as I walked through the metal detector in my "Ich herz screech wobble" t-shirt. "It's a type of music", I responded. "Oh really?", he bemused. "I've never heard of that, what does that sound like?" "It screeches and wobbles" I was on my way out of my homeland after spending a week there, marking the end of my former job and my graduation ceremony from university, and on the way to Lithuania, where I had been invited to play a show. Since there was no flight back to the vicinity of Prague until Sunday morning, it was one of those rare occasions where I would see a new place without choosing to, a place where it was obviously necessary for me to go for some ... read more
