Geo: 54.6896, 25.2799Today was the first day we traveled between two countries by car. We left Riga this morning with our ultimate destination being Vilnius, Lithuania. On the way, along with our new driver and new guide, Olga, we made two stops. The first was at Rundale Palace. Though we had already tired of palace hopping, it was a nice rest stop, and relaxing nevertheless due to the lack of crowds and pleasant weather. Olga also paced our tour well, not dwelling too long on any one portrait or table setting. On one chimney, a stork had built quite a large nest. This stork flies home to Egypt during the winters. The stork is actually the national bird of Lithuania, though we hadn't gotten there yet. Swallows seemed to be overtaking the front of the palace, ... read more

An end of…… …. four years of a new culture, many different experiences, find the real love, interesting people, new amazing friends, an education, a hard language, never ending cold winters, awesome time, night long parties, beautiful summers, relative searching, exam weeks, dance in the rain, Couchsurfing meetings, a beginning of an education, Cili Pica/Kaimas restaurants, travelling, hosting wonderful people, our engagement, having Friday whole week, surfing next door neighbor couch, sitting and studying whole day, eating a kebab at night, a funeral, spending nights in Riga airport, sleeping on the lectures, dreaming, planning, living the real student life, having few months long conversations on Skype, waking up and don’t realize where we are, many layers of cloths, watching movies, walks in the night and day, cepelinai – a great Lithuania food, celebrating, sharing a good ... read more

After Estonia and Latvia, I arrived in the final Baltic state of Lithuania. I was heading to the country’s small coastline and Lithuania’s third largest city, Klaipéda, but I stopped along the way at the fourth city, Siaulai (more or less pronounced Shoo-lay). This industrial city doesn’t really have anything to detain the visitor for that long, but 10km outside Siaulai is what has been described as the most “awe inspiring sight in Lithuania”, namely Siaulai’s Hill of Crosses. Essentially there are 2 small hills which, over many years, Lithuanians have taken to putting crosses in. There are more than 200,000 crosses there now, of all sizes. I was amazed at how many people were actually at the site when I visited – I assumed something so obscure and essentially in the middle of nowhere would ... read more

I've been pleasantly surprised with Lithuania. Granted, I've only been here for 5 days but it has a good feel about it and, the roads have seen a significant improvement. Yay! What I am a little disappointed about though, if that's the right word, is that there's no fanfare when you cross the border, no passport inspection, no stamp. You're lucky if you get a welcome sign. I'm not saying bring back the days of old but I am nostalgic about trying to discern which country's stamp it actually is in my passport... And you know, if you're on the road for 3 months (or longer say) it would be great to have a little more proof, other than the this-is-the-date-you-arrived stamp and the this-is-the-day-you-left stamp with nothing in between, that you actually travelled through the ... read more

A Jewel of a City There is much to visit and see in Vilnius and, heaven knows, we walked many miles, went to museums, visited numerous churches and explored many streets to see as much as we could in our limited time there. It is not just the historic places that are interesting, life in general and events taking place are also interesting. Festival We were fortunate in that a folk festival was in progress the Saturday and Sunday we were there. The square in front of the town hall was full of folk craftsmen/women displaying and selling their wares. These were not factory mass-produced "trash" but the real thing, handcrafted items. Sadly we have seen the real hand made items disappear in similar stalls in Prague during times of festivals, such as Christmas and Easter ... read more

Location The Hill of Three Crosses lies just outside of Old Town Vilnius near the Upper Castle. It is not hard to get there even if you are walking, as we were. It is a bit tiring to get to the top on a hot day like today. Knowing that the probability of our being in Vilnius again is slight, we included it even if we were already pretty tired from walking for hours. In my opinion the major reason to visit the crosses is the view of the city from the top. Certainly you can see the crosses themselves quite well from other places. So, if you are in town I would say not to bother with the climb. We walked up the road since if there is a path through the woods we missed ... read more

ICON OF THE HOLY MOTHER OF MERCY After stowing our things in the hotel we struck out to see the sights and sites of Vilnius. We knew the general direction of the old part of the city and headed that way. After walking four or five blocks we saw an arch through a high wall. Nancy couldn't bear to stay on the same side of the street where we were and ignoring this interesting looking arch. So, she asked if we could 'Please just go over and look through that arch'. It turned out to be the entrance to Ausros Vartai Street. Later I read this is called the Gate of Dawn. It looked to be an interesting way to walk so we passed through. Walking on, down a slight downgrade, we turned to see the ... read more

May 28th to May 31st. We have wanted to visit the Baltic States, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia for a number of years. Through the years at IBTS we have been blessed with meeting and becoming friends with a number of people from these countries. This year we decided we would visit this area of the world. After all we are not getting any younger and there is no guarantee we will ever be back in Europe. We like to travel by train, but this was not a viable option given our time restraints. It is possible to go by train from Prague to Vilnius, but it requires a number of changes and quite a bit of time. It is also possible to go by bus ... but riding on a bus for 48 to 51 hours ... read more
