Well this particular story should start onboard the boat. We had been at sea for about two weeks after our trip to Antalya, Turkey. We were all set to pull into Livorno when the weather started getting rough. This ended up resulting in the need to not pull in until the next day. We thought our plans were dashed as you can do somethings in Europe in seven days that six is just too hard. But we pulled yet another wonderful scam and were on our way off the boat that day in a helicopter that afternoon. You see, we had told everyone we were going to visit Mike's sister in Scotland that week and had an airline reservation. I love it when a plan comes together. So we finally arrived at the airbase/airport in Livorno ... read more

Europe » Italy October 14th 1994

I had to attend an Infrastructure Conference at AFSOUTH in Naples during the week of October 10, 1994. At the time, airfares were substantially less if one stayed over a Saturday night. So rather than return to Brussels after the meeting ended at noon on Friday, I was paid per dium for one day and I paid for the second day to stay until Sunday, thus saving the U.S. government over $1000 in airfare. The flight from Brussels to Naples was interesting in that the plane flew over each of the homes I had lived in Europe; Overijse, Glan Munchweiler and Boblingen, in Germany. The sky was clear so I could see each home as we flew past. I won't say much about my week in Naples, other than to say that I was pleasantly surprised ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Figline Valdarno July 24th 1993

On even years our summers were dominated by home leave back in the States. Odd years we spent our summers exploring Europe. Two years earlier, from 10 -25 August 1991, we had visited Berlin and Dresden in former East Germany; Prague, Czech Republic; Bratislava, Slovakia; and Budapest, Hungary just before the end of the Soviet Union. The last time we had been south to Switzerland and Italy was the Spring of 1989, before Will was born and the girls were too young to remember the vacation. Now that he was almost four, the kids were now old enough to understand and enjoy their travels. My Canadian colleague at NATO recommended a villa in Tuscany that he and his wife and many from his delegation had stayed at on previous vacations. So we booked an apartment in ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice May 25th 1993

UK & Europe, May 1993 Left Florence and headed for Venice. Venice gives off an air of elegance, yet there is much ruin and decay when you look closely. We went to a glass blowing factory and saw the most amazing creations of glass ware. True craftsmanship. I have always had a romantic notion of Venice in my mind. A romantic gondola trip through the canals with my husband by my side, whispering endearing words of love in my ear.......That notion was quickly squashed with no hope of romance from my better half! He was too busy looking through the lens of our video camera all the time. But we did get to glide through the canals on a gondola and I enjoyed every minute of it. I could get used to this mode of transport! ... read more
