WE MISSED THE BOAT TO ITALY!!!
I'll get to that soon…let me catch you up…
So we moved from our gorgeous pink mansion on the mountainous/sunset side of santorini to the black sand/beach side (had I told you it was pink? Well it was, and it was stunning)…we succeeded in doing nothing, mainly because there was nothing to do…the 'town' (Kamari) was a bit on the dodgy side…there were lots of empty restaurants (it seems the season ends sooner on this side of the island) and lots of employees, in the shops and in the hotels, who weren't of greek origin – not that there's anything wrong with that, it was just really weird speaking greek to people in Greece and having them look at me like I was the spastic
And woe is us, the suite we booked for 2 nights was unavailable and they HAD to upgrade us to a room with a private plunge pool…they even apologized! If you are ever stuck on the wrong side of santorini during off season, I highly recommend a suite at a spa hotel with a private pool...trust
ALGOTHERAPY – know what that is? I didn't either until I got it…a full body, warm
seaweed mask…I was exfoliated from the neck down and then plastered with seaweed mud, wrapped in plastic*, and left to mould for 20 mins…my skin was so soft afterwards and it was just so pleasant after a difficult 2 days of plunging in my private pool between sunning myself, drinking my new favourite drink (vermouth rosso), and reading…we may have been hellishly bored but we were fabulous while we were at it
*yes, I was thinking about Twin Peaks…
she's deeead, wraaaped in plaaaastic
…and then you wake up and your taxi takes a little too long to arrive, and there are lots of people at the airport, and the aeroplane is late to land in Athens, and you say goodbye to your bff who is leaving for Australia and you're sad she's not coming with you, and the bus terminal is a bit further than you thought, and the bus you want is full, and the next one is delayed and will take much longer than normal to arrive – bottom line, our boat for Italy was leaving at 6pm and the bus would get us there at 6.15pm…we were fuckered
…and then you call the boat company who are of no help, and then you look up flights to get you to rome, and then you consider the cost of 2 flights plus 1 night's accommodation plus the cost of 2 forfeited overnight boat tickets from Patras to Bari and 2 forfeited rail tickets from Bari to Rome…we were expensively fuckered
AND THEN – Melissa makes an almost off-handed, softly-worded suggestion -
let's just take a taxi, it's bound to be cheaper than all of those expenses put together…DING DING DING, we have a winner
We paid/bribed/bartered/made a deal with a taxi driver to drive us the 211km to the port so we can make it to our boat, and it worked…a wad of cash was exchanged, he shared some amusing useless information about greece and the areas we drove through along the way, and he got us to the port a whole hour before departure at speeds of up to 160km an hour – all for a third of the price
So I lied, we didn't reeeeeeeally miss the boat to Italy, we nearly/would have/were for sure going to miss it, but now we're on it
This trip so far I have:
- travelled to the furthest point north on the planet I have ever been (Copenhagen)
- travelled to the further point south in the Mediterranean Sea I've ever been (Santorini)
- paid the highest taxi fare I've ever paid
And I'm still going 😊
