Leaving Lago Maggiore was hard after such an amazing time with Luisa and Eduardo. We packed up the Fiat and drove about 4 hours to Vicenza where we had set up accommodations at a small studio apartment, sleeping on a futon. We knew nothing of Vicenza, only that it was a good home base to explore Venice and Verona. The apartment was very cute and Vicenza turned out to be a very mellow, classy town filled with beautiful architecture and many small cafés. We decided to drive up into the Dolomites our first day. We passed many small typical Italian villages with red roofs and tall clock towers on the way. We spent some time in Asiago cruising around town, drinking espresso and people watching. On our journey we came across a large wedding taking ... read more

Greetings from Italy! Yes, I am really here, and yes, I am not positive about how to put in the contraction mark using this keyboard. They all have to be different, it seems! But my group made it to Venice, and today we have seen the main square and the bell tower...I managed to capture a bit of the video I was imagining there. We studied a few paintings and went inside the church (cathedral of St. Mark, or really, the possessive of that--you get my drift). I will definitely find ways to add pictures, for we all have taken countless ones already. The main thing on my mind at the start of the trip is the fact that my luggage is misplaced. We flew into Verona, actually, and then on to Venice. But in London ... read more

Today is a sad day. We are packing and preparing to disembark! I will miss the MS Veendam, even though I told Nick no more cruises for me unless they are Weight Watchers approved cruises. Cruising is nice because you don't have to pack and unpack for 10 days, but the tours are often too quick, leaving you wishing you had more time to explore. Tonight we had dinner in the fancy restaurant one last time. Nick had lamb chops and I had scallops. We ate with Melinda and Terry, while Marian had one last meal with her Sister and Rocky (her Sister's boyfriend). This morning we were in Koper, Slovenia for a half day. It was interesting... a sleepy little Eastern European town. We had three machiatos and a bananna frappe for 4.05 Euros. That ... read more

We made it to Italy safely! Our flight went well, it didn't take too long at all. It was bumpier than I prefer but I was probably overreacting. The wings and engines didn't snap off, and my Tylenol PM did a good job of knocking me out. Yeah! Air France gives you those little eye cover thingies that old ladies wear so I put mine on, put a few Tylenol PM's down with champagne (yes, champagne) and knocked myself out! We arrived to Paris late but when we got off the plane we had an escort waiting for us. Not the police kind of escort, but a monsieur who took us through the airport/security/immigration and to the gate of our next plane. We were the last two folks on the plane but we didn't miss the ... read more

I’ve always been interested in UNESCO sites all around the world after visiting the Borobudur Temple in Indonesia several years back. I was thrilled to learn that one of the UNESCO sites protected in Italy, apart from Roman Forum and others, is the town of Vicenza. Vicenza is the home of Palladian architecture, which defines the classic Italian Reneissance architecture in late fourteenth century. Paladio’s nest Andrea Paladio (1508-1580) contributed most of the cultures we experienced in town of Vicenza, including the world famous Paladio’s Villa Rotunda (c. 1571) in outskirt of Vicenza, which was perfectly shaped and symmetrical from all angles. From the inside, the villa felt more aesthetic than functional to my modern standard, but I could imagine aristocrat people back in the fourteenth century lived in the villa. Everything was perfectly designed with ... read more
