Day 9: Rome, Italy to Venice, Italy Thursday, October 15th,2009 Of to Venice we go with a friendly stopover in Verona to see Juliet's balcony, a replica of the balcony used in the play Romeo and Juliet. Well, I did not find Verona to be too interesting. Juliet's balcony was just one of those tourist traps. There wasn't much there. Just a balcony and a bunch of letters on the wall. There was also apparently a status of Juliet and if you touched its breasts, it will apparently give you good luck. Lame, just another way to spread germs!!!! However, there was this square in the middle of Verona that was selling these Venetian masks and jewelery that was worth looking at. It was here that my sister, Renata realized that she left her bag containing all her money, cards, and passport, at the rest stop on the way to Verona. So while we were freaking out, we told our tour manager the situation, and she said that when we arrived in Venice to go to the police station to report the passport missing. Furthermore, she said that when we arrived in Amsterdam, we could go to "The Haag" where
the Canadian embassy can give her a temporary passport, so that she will be able to cross the border into England. All I have to say, is that she is lucky to have me, her own personal bank account ;-)
When we arrived at our campsite in Venice, we immediately called and cancelled Renata's credit and debit card. We told our parents about the situation and emailed our cousin Jean in England. After all that was done we got ready for our day in Venice the next day.
Day 10: Venice, Italy Friday, October 16th, 2009 The next day our tour manager took us on a tour of Venice, where we got to see St. Mark's Square, which included St. Marks Basilica, the Clock Tower, Doge Palace, and the Bridge of Signs. Venice definitely has a pigeon problem, as there were pigeons everywhere in the square. Our tour manager warned us not to feed the pigeons, so that we wouldn't exasperate the situation. Furthermore, she told us that there was a time during the year when the square gets completely flooded with water and that people need to walk on benches to get around. After the tour,
we went to see a glass blowing demonstration, which was amazing to watch and relaxed as we traveled the waterways on a Gondola ride.
After the Gondola ride we had free time so Renata, Kathy and I explored the inside of St. Marks Cathedral. I then bought a Venetian mask and some Murano glass jewelery, to give as presents back home. On the way to find the police station, to report Renata's missing passport, we got extremely lost (which is apparently a trend for tourists in Venice ;-). Since not many people spoke English, it took a long time for us to find our way back. On our adventure, we discovered a university, a gelato stand and finally a closed tourist office. At last we were able to reach our destination.
The police station was located in the train station, right by the train tracks. It took some time, but we were finally able to explain to the police officer about Renata's missing passport.
We headed back to the campsite, where we had the option to dress in a toga for a Topdeck toga party. I opted out because it was way too cold. Nevertheless, it was enjoyable

If you touch its breasts, it will give you good luck watching the Australians get drunk in their barely covering togas. A prank on our drunk bus driver (the next day was his day off), found him running around the campsite naked. And one of the Australian boys hooked up with a group on girls on a high school trip ( in the end, he got them in trouble). Good times!!!
