Venice Garden
Laura is in a beautiful garden. Today is our last day in Venice (Oct 22). We were suppose to go to Verona, but decided not to go since Venice had so much to show us. We got up and hit the streets right away. One of the highlights of San Marco square close to our hotel are the thousand of pigeons (flying rats). Lissa loves birds and had to feed the darn things...to my dismay, I was conjouled into feed them to. All you do is buy the seed from a vendor and once you have that packet, the flying monsters swarm you, as you can see in the pictures. Dan was hilarious when one unfortunate bird happened to get his tail feathers under Dan's shoes. The poor thing scratched away to try and fly off, but Dan kept him under foot for quite a while. Once Dan felt and heard the ruckus, let the birdie go.....cruel I tell you, but he is from Saskatchewan.
We walked around and did some shopping, mostly for the kids. We wanted to go on a gondola ride through the canals, but by the time we came across one that was free, the gondolier told us they were shutting down
San Marco Square & The Pigeons
Here Dan & I are fighting off the birds in a feeding frenzy. due to rain. It was spitting all day, and our hopes started to fade. So we ended up walking around Venice's market. The market is really cool and lots of neat things to see and eat. We have never seen such different produce and meats. It made us very hungry and thristy. Of course we went for lunch and had a great meal and some vino.
The vino count is at 8 bottles at this time and is going to continue......The wine is SO cheap and really good.
As we were wandering through the many alleys and streets of Venice, we came across a hotel that Ron & Lissa want to book us into instead of the Westin, but it was away from where we wanted to be, so we decided to walk in and check it out. Just as we were leaving, you will never believe who we literally walked into. There in front of us stood Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones. We all shit ourselves...... It was too surreal. We wished we could have asked him to join us for dinner but he looked like he was in a rush. Next time I suppose.....
Gondola Parking Lot
Where gondolas go when it starts to rain. Once it got closer to the later afternoon (5 ish), the skies stopped spitting and we were able to do this once in a lifetime boat ride. We waved down a gondola and hopped on. We did an hour tour, it was very expensive, but when you're in Venice you must do this. The gondolier sang songs, chatted with other gondoliers and gave us a brief histroy lesson as we weaved through the gorgeous canals.
After our ride, we walked some more and found a place to have dinner on our last evening in Venice. Dinner was wonderful and we decided to call it a night. We have to get up early to leave for Ravenna.
