Our last night in Rome was enlightening. We met our two roommates who were from Stockholm and the very stereotype of Swedish girls. Blonde hair, stylish, giggly vixens. So that is what I am up against next year. We didnt talk to them much but they seemed nice. I was reading a book called The Bermuda Triangle which is damn crazy and Melissa went to get some water and didnt come back so I went to see what she was doing. She was talking to a guy from Portugal and another from Italy. Apparently she had asked the question, “What do you think of Americans?” and this had set them off. Before I came in they were speaking about how American girls are always drunk and Italian girls never are. I was a little insulted but I can see that it is true. The guy from Portugal then brought up our gun control policies and we argued about that for some time. I hate guns but I ended up having to defend our policies which was insane in itself. These two were so passionate about thier countires that I felt I had to be as well. Im not a very patriotic sort of person and I dont agree with alot of things our country does but I tried to explain it as best I could to them. Bush was coming to Italy in a few days and many were not happy about this. I had no idea that there is many Italians in Iraq. Horrible to make others fight our war I think. Some Canadians came out to talk and we discussed how Canadians always sport thier flag in an effort to distinguish themselves from Americans. The Italian guy played us some Tupac and then played American Idiot by Green Day and laughed at us and it was pretty funny. He wasnt being mean, they were just making fun. I had a very good time talking to them and felt a little ashamed that I didnt know much about my country and they knew thier countries complete history.
The next day we took a 5 hour train ride to Camping Fusina in Venezia or Venice. It is like a campground and we shared a trailer with another guy. Our room smelled like old boy and mouthwash. It made me want to gag but I grew accoustomed to it. We paid 10 euros to take a boat to Venice. There are no cars there, duh its an island, and a map seemed futile. I do believe e veryone there was lost but was to proud to admit it. We just all roamed down the skinny alleys with fake confidence trying to find our ways through the maze of overpriced shops and pizzarieas and gelato shops. I have had gelato everyday. It does a body good. And it is one euro. We came across St Marco Square and we went up the tower and saw all of Venice which was quite nice. In Venice you have to pay extra to eat a meal sitting at a table so we bought some pizza and ate in an alley. Vagrant all the way baby. We sat above the canal as the gondala men rowed past singing opera. I love the canals. I love Venice but there is far too many people and too small of passageways and you feel like you are dying a slow croweded death.
We came back to camp and went to take showers and accidently went in the mens. I laughed my ass off at Melissa and we got out of there before anyone could see us. That night we came out of our trailer and some guys were drinking wine at the table. They were from LA and Seattle but had studied in Spain and we drank some wine mixed with Sprite with them. I wouldnt reccomend it. Some guys from Germany and Holland came and joined us. The guys from Spain told us about the food there and said people there love mayo. The guy from Germany told us we spoke English well compared to Texans and I laughed and made fun of hicks. We then went to the bar and had 50 cent champage and met some Australians who made fun of American girls being stupid. It is hard to try and show that we have brains when everyone seems to think we are vapid. But no one is rude, they just mess around with us. The bartender gave Melissa a free drink which she is so proud of and with that we went to bed.
