Holidays in a motorhome take a life on of their own. They start off planned but along the way challenges arrive and change what you have planned. We might fall upon a hidden gem and decide to go off the beaten track to find it. We may love where we are and stay longer than planned. Sometimes we just don’t have the weather and move on.
Our plans this year have changed completely. Places we wanted to visit have been left out. The appalling weather at the start has meant we moved on in chase of sunshine. Campsites did not turn out as we expected. Suzy was getting a serious thrashing this holiday. We would have loved to have stayed longer at Venice. I wanted to see Villa Foscari but sadly we had missed the opening on Tuesday and the next one wouldn’t be until the weekend. There is only so much of dogs barking you can stand.
Getting out of the campsite and the area proved a whole lot easier than getting in. Sally Sat Nag had taken us off too early . She has mind of her own. It took a little while to sort her out
but sorted out she was.
Soave – what do you know of Soave? If you are scrabbling to work out . I will help it’s wine. We had not intended ending up here but we did. Many of our trips in Suzy end up like this with a chance thought that turns into reality. We noticed Soave on the way down. Well you could hardly help but notice it with its great walls clinging to the hillside and its castle on the top of the hill. A hint of a borgo. It was one of those places you look at in the distance and think - on the way back we must visit.
Sally Sat nag had the co-ordinates taken from our Camperstop book. We drove through the huge gates into Soave. One way in and one way out. We trundled up a very quiet town where everyone seemed to have gone to bed early. It was silly o'clock and siesta time. The place was deserted. We drove slowly up the street alongside the river and the town walls and Sally said turn left and you have reached your destination. Oooo[s we looked around
and if this was a sosta then I was dreaming. The signs suggested it was a car park for the local police force and anyone parking would be towed away. We skulked out and found another motorhome parked up on the next street. Just to make sure I put our blue time badge into Suzy's window. We left here and walked into town. One main street which lay within its lovely walls. Its castle high up on the hillside. The Scaliger Walls, built by Cansignorio della Scala have three gates , the Porta Aquila, the Porta Vicentina and the Porta Verona. On two sides (west and south) are backed by a moat. The moat was full of fishes and water saxifrage.
We stopped partway along at a restaurant. Well we thought it was a restaurant but it turned out to be just a cafe where we sat out in the sun under a canopy covered with vines. We ate Panini and drank coke in the sunshine.
After lunch we walked to the tourist office where we were told that there was parking at the castle for motorhomes but sadly the castle did not open until 3 in the afternoon. It did look lovely but sadly we did not feel like hanging round waiting for it to open. Instead we walked around the town again and along the walls. We found the sosta in the end. So the moral of the story is don't rely on the co-ordinates in a camper stop book keep your eyes open. It will be there somewhere but not necessarily where you think it will be.
Thoughts of Soave - might come back again and get to the castle. That is two castles we have missed this trip. Gorizia and here
