Well this all started out on a Friday evening in western Germany. We had just finished work around 5pm and were heading home to get our bags. It wasn’t long until we were off to the Old Dublin for some dinner and drinks. Figured it was the best way to stay up until the 1230am departure from Karlsruhe Hauptbahnhof to Santa Maria Novella here in Florence. The train station was surprising cold. It had been a mild fall and we had not seen any indication that snow would fall soon. After leaving the pub around 1130pm we arrived at the Bahnhof with about 30 minutes to spare. When we finally figured out which end of the platform our car would be at it was time to board. We were luck enough to have the coachette to ... read more

The art is worth spending a day here, but there weren't many Italians, except ones who zoomed past on mopeds through the narrow streets. Checkmark city. There are more photos below.... read more

This is about our trip to San Gimignano Italy in 1999. Living in Germany and being retired from the U.S. military, I am authorized to use the Armed Forces Recreation facililties. So, we drove from Germany to a military installation vicinity of Pisa, where we camped and made this site our base, as we did a little more traveling around Italy. After a couple hour drive from Pisa we found ourselves in the old village of San Gimignano. Nestled high on a hill (334 meters) and surrounded by the beautiful Tuscan countryside and vineyards, we experienced 14th and 15th century architecture and art. There are museums and churches scattered through the village and amongst the multiple shops and restaurants. The old buildings near and in the town square create a cerrtain ambiance that allows one to ... read more

Day 33 Aug 3nd Remember that date. This is the day I succumbed to the overwhelming pressure exhibited by a hoard of felines and grabbed my rattling pig by the snout, bashed its’ head open and scraped out the stuff inside in exchange for fine Italian wares. The day started out as any other. Woke up, fell back asleep, and woke up again a little later. Dribbly shower. Look for friends to gnaw with or look to avoid people I didn’t want to gnaw with. Eat crappy breakfast. Nothing special. And then, following up exactly where last night left off, I ran into Meredith. She looked somewhat interested to see me and I, being a guy, liked the fact that she merely remembered me from the night before. Discussing our plans for the day, Meredith mentioned ... read more

Day 31 Thursday Aug 1, 1997 Staring at the ceiling. It was 6 something in the whatever. The Chinese dudes in the cots beside me were still asleep; their snores reverberating off the walls shook my cot. Once again, with the dawning rays of the sun I opened my eyes and immediately succumbed to the unyielding Venetian heat. No mas...I give up. I just couldn’t bear another day there. I couldn’t remain on that awful battlefield. The marauding tourist hoard was too challenging an enemy. There were just too many of them. Venice is a beautiful, ancient city with countless interesting attractions and a million reasons to stay. While I had merely scratched the surface by experiencing what the place offered, my sanity and serenity was too important. Trudging around town, hot as a sonofabitch, expending ... read more

Day 32 Aug 2 The morning fare. The sunrise surprise. The daily disappointment. Today, I treated my palate to a scrumptious dish of bread and hot chocolate. Sitting down with the rabble, I reached across the table and served myself a crusty bun. Unfortunately, the crusty bun was crusty on both the outside and on the inside. A petite portion of marmalade was provided to aid in softening up my “le grande crouton”. I felt like a huge mouse scratching on the side of the bun, trying to dislodge enough crumbs with my teeth to satisfy my hunger. Accompanying my ‘bread’ was a cup of hot chocolate. I was certain, undeniably certain, that I asked for a cup of coffee. Hot chocolate? What perplexes me was not the fact that they mixed up my order; rather, ... read more

Well this particular story should start onboard the boat. We had been at sea for about two weeks after our trip to Antalya, Turkey. We were all set to pull into Livorno when the weather started getting rough. This ended up resulting in the need to not pull in until the next day. We thought our plans were dashed as you can do somethings in Europe in seven days that six is just too hard. But we pulled yet another wonderful scam and were on our way off the boat that day in a helicopter that afternoon. You see, we had told everyone we were going to visit Mike's sister in Scotland that week and had an airline reservation. I love it when a plan comes together. So we finally arrived at the airbase/airport in Livorno ... read more
