hello again, sorry to take so long to publish, but as you can imagine, travelling in a campevan is not conducive to writing blogs on computers. however, must admit have been very very lazy when we got to fondi and settled down in the house, however, we have been so busy that time has just got away from us. well lets continue the 'grisswold' travels. after successfully negotiating paul around the city without the benefit of gps (see previous blog) we managed to locate the camping ground that we could stay in. straight away he dragged me up the hill into the town. Arezzo is set on top of a hill and you need to climb up the stairs, in the distance I spied an escalator, but paul wanted to hike up the stairs, fortunately, i ... read more

Arriving in Lucignano was a bit of a culture shock for all of us. Rome and Sorrento were loud and alive with constant activity and crowds, Lucignano was asleep by 9pm! (seriously, a walk around the circular road of the town confirmed this, not a single Lucignanian was sighted!). This was not entirely unwelcome as it forced us to slow down and catch our breath for a while. The language barrier however, became more obvious than ever. Not only was it nearly impossible to find someone who spoke even broken English but we noticed differences in the Italian language between north and south. A visit to the Pharmacia to buy antihistamines for Jess resulted in me making strange throat clearing noises and scratching at my eyes in an attempt to communicate the issue. After several minutes ... read more

First up, apologies for the long pause between drinks. We've moved to the north where internet access is dial up if it's available at all. Don't give up on us though, the blogs will continue till the last episode and with our next hops being Venice and Paris they should be more frequent. Capri Spent the day at Capri today after the short 20 minute boat trip across the bay of Naples. It's easy to understand why it's the place to be seen and why you can pay in excess of a million euro for a small one or two bedroom apartment on one of many cliff faces. Gucci, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Yves Saint Laurent, Hermes, just keep naming them. They are all there (and we mean side by side not just scattered around the ... read more

25 Sept 2008 A quiet day today at the camp for Doug to recover from the excitement of yesterday. Played in the pool, lots of yahtzee and ping-pong. Doug managed some exercise in the gym and the boys found friends to play with after dinner. so a relaxing day all round. I must say that I'm getting a bit tired of looking at ornate churches. A few days ago the boys asked why we went to so many churches, my reply was that in churches you got art, sculpture, history, culture as well as a bit of religion thrown in. Joseph, being quite the pyromaniac, was very excited about the candles.... read more

20 Sept 2008 Today we drove to Figline Valdarno, a little town south of Florence, for our next stay. The trip was uneventful, taking just over 2.5 hours, and we arrived just after noon. The Norcenni Girasole Club is extensive. Our Bungalow is right near 3 restaurants, 3 bars, 3 large swimming pools with slides, the games room, gym, two large shops and a gelateria. So we've been having a bit of fun! The oustide pools are freezing - as FLorence had the rains the same time we did over by Ferrara. That didn't stop Joseph from going on the mid-sized slide, and I also had a go - albeit very briefly. It was still a warm day with plenty of sunshine so after a dip in the covered heated pool I had a sunbathe with ... read more

Arezzo, without a doubt one of the leading Etruscan cities in it's day. Much of it from 5th & 4 century BC. Home to Guido d'Arezzo, Petrarc, Vasari, Francesca.... even Michelangelo was born nearby. Of particular interest are the stained glass windows in the Catherdral of Arezzo by Guillaume de Marcillat (latter 1400's). This Cathedral just screams Gothic! Dark, I mean REALLY dark, dark reliefs, dark paintings, only natural lighting @ a million candles. It's lovely really just a complete shock when coming in from outside. One thing I've noticed is; no one (official) in the church's. No concierge or any likeness thereof. A few cameras in the bigger cathedrals, but otherwise, I'm often alone with my family. So far we have yet to see, even in the major cities, any substantial amount of graffiti on ... read more

Wow. Yesterday was Firenze (thatàs Florence) and today my neck is sore as hell from looking up at all the incredible sights. I went with my godfather Jim Fantuz, and Colleen, (with whom I am staying) and they were invaluable in showing me the sights and helping me to fully experience the city of Florence. Itàs hard to know where to start in a city so densely packed with wonders, but I will with the buildings. First was the Santa Maria Novella, a towering, monolithic structure whose facade was a tapestry of white and black marble. It is a huge cathedral that commands the attention of a whole piazza, or square (though the square was under construction), and draws throngs of onlookers. Come to think of it, there were throngs of onlookers everywhere in the city. ... read more
