The view along the way Day 28 : Thursday 3 October 2019 : Lake Garda to Innichen/San Candido The new plan is to head to San Candido/Innichen in the Dolomites. It’s very close to the Austrian border. We had left a few days clear to decide how we wanted to make our way to Lake Bled. Kirsten was very keen to get to the Dolomites but when we left home I just hadn’t been able to find a nice place to go without hiring a car and spending hours doubling back on ourselves. So I invested many hours of an evening doing more homework, and I found a post from someone recommending Innichen and it met our requirements. So off we go.
The scenery got more and more lovely as we headed North. We noticed that people were getting on the train with jackets and scarves. We left Lake Garda in tshirts and maybe 24 degrees? It takes about 4 hours by train. The countryside is amazing, with more and more mountains. We had to change trains in Fortezza to the Austrian Lines and OMG its freezing. Need to rug up. All the signs are in Austrian or German, not English.
As our
train continues, we pass snow capped mountains and we get more and more excited. We arrive at our destination, already in raptures about the beautiful scenery. The Airbnb owner came to greet us at the station. He took us to our accommodation. Apparently it got cold in the last week and its about 13 degrees, we’re freezing.
The town is so beautiful, the countryside magnificent and we LOVE our accommodation as well. Its not a very big town, about 3000 people, and the owner is the local policeman who is keen to practice his English…fine by us. The housing is like the Austrian housing, with most of it made of wood. The entry to our accommodation is the original house, over a 1000 years old, with a wood fire built into the wall to keep it warm. The policeman’s family has owned it for generations, but he and his brother upgraded and added on in recent years, and his family live on the top floor.
Time to explore this gorgeous little town. There’s a supermarket opposite our accommodation. Although we’re probably too early, Ella is keenly waiting for snow on the mountain peaks, which of course we can
see from our room ?
We walked to the indoor swimming pool, which is worth a mention. Small town, 3000 people, so it’s a small pool, with a glass ceiling so you can look out at the Dolomites (the three peaks). It has a slide and a whirlpool as well. The girls had an awesome time just relaxing, whilst Graham and I sat upstairs in the restaurant, and drank warming wine, whilst watching the girls below. How Awesome! Dinner in.
Turns out signs are all in Italian and Deucht. Much harder for us, nothing in English, but the younger generations speak English. Explains why it looks Austrian.
