After our enjoyable time checking out Erice and the salt pans of Trapani we were off to the island group of Egadi. If you have never heard of them, you aren’t alone as we hadn’t before we started researching this area to sail. It is made up the 3 major islands of Favignana, Marettimo and Levanzo. We planned on staying out in the islands two nights so we could have gone to two different islands but we decided to be lazy and just sit and relax on a mooring at Favignana, the largest of the islands. All of the islands are surrounded by a marine park which was established in 1991. With this come restrictions on the use of various areas surrounding the islands which is good for all. Fortunately our pilot book for Italy includes ... read more

We left Palermo at 7:25AM and headed west toward a town by the name of Capo San Vito. We had heard from a few people that it was a nice place to stop and it would mean a nice short day of only about 6 hours. It was a very calm day with only light winds but what we did have was on the nose. Another day where we put up the mainsail but also had the iron jenny (the motor) on as well. It gave us time to motor along the coast to see the beautiful outcrops, rocky crags and a few caves as well. Fortunately a little later in the morning the wind changed direction and we were able to get more power from the sails which was very enjoyable. We came to the ... read more

Palermo – what do you say about this city? It is a vibrant, energetic place with magnificent places to see, plenty to learn about and an abundance of choices of foods to try. What is not to like?? We have heard that this is a place that people seem to love or hate. Obviously we are on the love side as we wound up staying here for 12 days. In actual fact though we could have probably left a couple of days earlier but the weather thought otherwise and we still found things to fill the days with. We were off to a great start with the marina that we picked to stay at while here. There are a few options, but fortunately for us friends of ours were in Palermo earlier and gave us great ... read more

Europe » Italy » Sicily » Monreale July 27th 2018

As mentioned in the previous blog entry we took a day trip from Palermo up to the hilltop village of Monreale as everyone had told us we “had” to see the Cathedral there. We were very glad we took their advice. It was a quick 40 minute bus trip up from Palermo to Monreale where the main attraction is the Cathedral. If you remember when we were in Cefalu there was a Cathedral there that was pretty impressive. It was built on the orders of Roger II who also had the Palatine Cathedral in Palermo built. Roger’s grandson, William II decided he wanted to outshine his grandfather and in order to do this he would build a Cathedral in Monreale. Roger II wanted to incorporate the workmanship of the Norman, Arab, Byzantine and Christian styles in ... read more

We woke up Monday morning to quite the thunderstorm with accompanying downpour. About 10AM we saw on our computer that the part that we had been waiting since last Tuesday had been delivered. Just had to wait for it to let up some for us to get off the boat and pick it up. Bob got the part and I continued on to the weekly Monday market and hit up 2 of the stores in town for supplies as we were counting on the part to work so we could leave the next day. Bob had to make a few modifications to make it all work, but fortunately when we turned the engine on and checked the battery level, everything worked as it was suppose to – success! This now meant we were definitely going to ... read more

On Tuesday we headed further south again to Sicily, but this time to the town of Taormina, on the north east coast. We went on an tour of Taormina, and the nearby city of Castelmola. Castelmola is a village set 1,800 feet high and is a small, quaint village with a bar once visited by Rockefeller, Ford and Churchill. Vistas over the Ionian sea were beautiful and this small village was an interesting stop. We ended in Taormina were we walked through the ancient town and stopped for a little wine. When in Italy, drink wine. Wednesday we sailed further south of Sicily to Malta, a small island chain and one of the most southern points of central Europe. We anchored just off the northern island of Gozo. The channel is very shallow here and only ... read more

I will say that our tour guide was overly informative regarding Taormina and Castelmola on the island of Sicily. She, tongue in cheek, informed us that all Sicilian women DO NOT wear 100% black clothes nor do they all have mustaches! Also, there are Moorish planters EVERYWHERE in Sicily. The legend is that a Sicilian woman fell in love with a Moorish man. The Moorish man already had 7 wives. When the Sicilian woman found out his secret, she cut off his head and used it as a planter for basil!... read more

The noon bells rang as we marveled at the beauty of the piazza of the Duomo in Siracusa, Sicily. We've strolled along the cobble streets and tiny alley ways this morning and now its time for lunch and we stop at a cafe with a stunning view of the cathedral that is both Norman and Baroque, having been reconstructed due to an earthquake in 1693. The Duomo of Siracusa is the standout site of the town. There is a holy place for Santa Lucia, an early, Christian martyr from Siracusa. Jack feels a wonderful symmetry of our trip to Southern Italy coinciding with Father's Day as his Father was stationed here while in the US Army Air Corps. I feel this is a lovely place to fulfill all of your southern Italian daydreams!... read more

Yesterday, after a wonderful week in Greece, we arrived in Italy, where we will spend much of the next two weeks. The first stop was a very small city on the “ball of the boot”, called Cortone, Italy. This was a very small city, and for my money, was really not very interesting. We spent about 1 hour in the old town and went back to the boat for a little pool time. It seems there are some interesting ruins outside of town that you could only see on one of the excursions. For sure, we have seen enough interesting ruins. Today we went lower in Italy, arriving at Siracusa, Sicily. I was really looking forward to arriving here because it is ironic that two days before Father’s Day, I arrive in a place my father ... read more

Saturday March 31 2018 - Another good day. I got up close to 8am, and my host offered me some cookies and tea. Not a healthy breakfast, but it tasted good. I got packed up and headed out for another walk around Ortigia. This time I found my way back and forth much easier. I spent a couple hours walking around and then headed back. I did a few internet things and then had to wait for the preteen to exit the bathroom so I could use it and get on the road. My drive was only an hour, and I was driving through the city, then on a weird forgotten backroad of dubious quality that had me driving under bridges through narrow gaps in the support. Finally I ended up on the highway and passed ... read more
