You can do nothing but immerse yourself in ancient history are on the island of Sicily. TIPS ABOUT THE FERRY ..First we had to get ourselves on the overnight ferry from Napoli to Catania. So we had a bit of scouting around during the day and found that the ticket office for our ferry TT LIne was straight down Via Marchese Campodisola from the Piazza Giovanni Bovio. We picked up the the tickets and were told to come back to the gate about 7 pm ... which was great because the ferry left at 9.30 and we didn't want to have too much hanging around all day and in the evening. I am giving this tip as there are not too many signs around and it could be a bit confusing. There are ferries going to ... read more

We are about half way on our tour through Sicily. Our last stop in Armerina we had to park our car in a very small street, very busy with trough fare traffic. In the morning I was flabbergast to find the car back without a scratch. Quickly the luggage back in the boot and of we went. On the way to Siracusa. The roads were very bad. Lots of pot holes and broken up shoulders. Very heavy loaded trucks that stopped us from making progress. We stopped at a very big service station that even had an automatic car wash. Well if you could have seen our car, unbelievable. Full of pigeon shit when we parked in this small street. They should tell those birds to leave tourist cars alone. Anyway the car wash cleaned most ... read more

After a late start (busy people-watching from the balcony) we were on the road using the Garmin as our guide. Everything was going great except the roads were getting narrower and narrower and signs were showing places we'd never heard of. Ross and I have come to rely on Garmin's wisdom but not so for our driver. He was facing major S curves, potholes, asphalt breaking away to the right on the cliffs - the rest of us were enamoured of the great scenery and I was continually snapping pics. After we passed a cow within inches I tried locating us on the Google Earth map. There we were a little dot way up in the mountains not on the 116 but actually heading towards it. Our goal was Randozza for lunch but we were out ... read more

Todays gelato flavours - GMB - Ice something?(can't remember the name but it was pink and sweet) GLB - Mandarino OK,the location of the Best Western Hotel we booked, is a little outside of Siracusa city, but it is certainly quiet and we both had another greats nights sleep in the biggest King size bed we have ever had the pleasure to sleep in. The hotel is modern with excellent furnishings and a shower that actually works well. ! The breakfast was also great with all the usual cereals, croissants, juices, fruit yogurt and also scrambled eggs and bacon, which was a bonus. We topped up and found we didn't need a formal lunch stop during the day so good was the breakfast. Without the benefit of a newspaper to read over breakfast we played guess the nation of the varied ... read more

Gelato of the day - GMB - Zuppa Inglese(Italian for English Soup)the ice cream had slivers of crystalised fruit. Our hosts were ready with our breakfast after we had had a good nights sleep although the shower had again proved to be a challenge with the same set up as the previous night and the hot water appeared to run out. Despite what we thought were the usual thick walls between rooms Gretchen reckoned she heard all the action from our neighbouring room although I slept through it all.Perhaps her next door was just a noisy sleeper. Mt Etna revealed more of herself this morning and we got more photos before the cloud came acrossAt 3323m above sea level it dictates the weather in the area. However she was all quiet overnight and no sign of ... read more

Geo: 37.0851, 15.273 We got up , had breakfast and headed out to visit the archeological park. At the park is an amphitheater, the largest altar in the world, carved from one piece of limestone, the Greek theater, Ear of Dionysius and the museum. It was hot! It hit 90 degrees, with a high humidity. We were sweating like pigs! The ear of Dionysius was a huge cave, formed when they took out large blocks of limestone to make all of the theaters and the altar. It must have been a hundred foot high inside. The Greek theater was really cool. After slogging around for 4 hours, we headed back to our hotel for a little nap. Then we walked to old town Siracusa for a look see, and for some dinner. We decided to eat ... read more

Geo: 37.0851, 15.273 We left Trapani on Monday morning and headed for Agrigento. Saw lots of farms along the way as we were inland. We found our hotel pretty easily, as some people said it was hard to find. Bonney, the GPS, took us straight to it. We checked in and then headed out to view the Greek temples and the museum that are in the area. We went to the valley of the temples and walked about 2 miles the first to the last one. They were built between 510 and 430 BC. The best one was the Temple of Concordia, which was the most complete. It was missing the roof, other wise it was in good condition, considering that it was 2500 years old! After walking around the temples, we went back to the ... read more

Geo: 37.0851, 15.273Ancient Greek ruins, atmospheric squares, beautiful architecture - Siracusa has it all, giving tourists numerous reasons to come visit this wonderful place, especially Ortygia, an island neighbourhood separated from Siracusa by two bridges. This is my second time around in Siracusa, but I didn't come back for any of what is listed above - I came back to eat, and eat well, damn it!!!For me, Sicily has always been the place where I felt I finally found Italy - Hollywood has sold us a lie, giving us all a vision of what Italy is, even before setting foot here. The canals of Venice, the statue of David, the Trevi Fountain - these are the stereotypical images burned in our minds by the movies, representing ideals which can never be achieved in real life.
