So yesterday I started my internship. First off, I think this will be a very good experience. About my job, I am working in the Consular section, which deals with all sorts of things, more things than I originally knew of. The first and foremost priority of the Consular Section is to help and protect American citizens and interests abroad. In this we deal with things such as lost passports, arrests, deaths of Americans abroad, crime victimization, repatriation, temporary financial assistance and the like. So part of each day is spent doing these types of things although most often it seems like lost passports are the main thing. But essentially is Americans are in trouble of any kind the Consulate's job is to help them however possible. For instance, today we met with a couple whose ... read more

Last night I had dinner (homemade pizza!) at Stefano's with him and Lucia for his mom's birthday. It was really fun to be with a family. It was them, his mom, her boyfriend, Stefano's sister and her boyfriend, and then a couple who I think were neighbors. We ate and everyone talked really, really fast, but I actually understood most of it which is amazing and very encouraging! One thing about being immersed in another culture and language is that it is the best way to learn a language but its also completely exhausting because you are constantly thinking and translating in your head and it just gets exhausting! But i was glad I could understand. I have a hard time understanding Stefano because he talks soo very fast, but I think I realized that he ... read more

Wow! I feel like so much has happened in the last day! I moved into my new place last night. It is my friend Lucia's place and it is adorable, albeit really really small. Its like a studio, one room for the bed/futon, kitchen and small kitchen table. But its perfect for one person and I love it. It also has a bathroom (good thing!). So I took a taxi full of all my stuff over there yesterday and Lucia helped me move it upstairs (except for the really big and heavy bag, that we left for her boyfriend :)) She showed me the palce and how everything worked, inluding the antenna for the t.v. that hangs out the window in some crooked fashion....I think I will not be watching much t.v. :) Then when her ... read more

So yesterday I was a bit discouraged, and very tired of traveling all by myself over here....so after a sleepless night of swapping mosquitos off my entire body (I have verifiably been eaten alive now) I got up, packed my stuff up, and headed out for a day of discovering the city. So far, everytime I have picked a section of town and certain things to see, I have for the most part ended up not seeing them but finding other cool things to do. Today I went to the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, which is right next door to where they have Leonardo's "The Last Supper". So I got there and saw the church, which is beautiful (pictures soon to come on all this stuff when I get a computer to load them ... read more

So I arrived in Milano yesterday! What a great city! I really haven't done much but today I explored a little and I think I will love it here! The Duomo (the main cathedral) is beautiful, and unfortunately the whole front of it is under restoration right now. But I will try to find a picture of it without all the scaffolding. The trip here was long, (three flights) but I made it through adn now I have a few days to adjust and get moved into my place for the first month. I am staying at my friend Lucia's place. She is a friend of my aunt Susies and she is such a doll. Everytime I talk to her she is so sweet and helpful, which is nice considering I dont know anyone else here. ... read more

So we finally made it to Milan, we started at 9:30, just after picking up a tensor bandage for me knee. I thought there were two steps instead of 3 and had a wee face plant. Trains were cancelled but we are here. Tommorow Paris. Our last days in Cinque Terre, we hiked, had a picnic, went to the beach, which was great minus the jelly fish and school groups. One turd face threw a gummy bear at me (Sarah). We also found the locals beach in Riomaggiore. We also ate more gelato and anchovies, Alex's favorite food and man do they have alot of them there. It was beautiful, Milan was a bit of a shock, but had an amusing time attempting to speak Italian. Also does anyone know a place where they develop picture ... read more

Hey guys- Just wanted to send you something, before I go, to see if this thing will work. I don't know how much time I will have to e-mail everyone, so I figured this would be the easiest way for everyone to see how things are going. I will try to add entries when I can, so please be patient with me. I think this site will be neat, because I think you can also post comments that I can read, so try to keep them PG; oh wait I know you guys, that is nearly impossible. I hope you all have a good and safe summer and I will try to do the same. Take care. Stephanie Meyer... read more

First a note to Roberto...( I gotta get on the forums, sorry) We went through Florence by Bike (www.florencebybike.com), which was AWESOME. The people were incredibly friendly and laid back, and the bikes were in good shape for being rentals. Plus they had really good advice for where to go (itineraries are also on the website), and free water bottles :) A note tho: If you are in reasonably good shape, you can cut the travel time on their itineraries in half. I am not a biker, never have been, haven't been in shape since my ten-year x-country skiing kick ending when I left AK, but I'm young and healthy, and above all stubborn, so our trip that was supposed to take a full day one way took us seven hours round trip, including a few ... read more

I just had a totally whirlwind, packed, crazy week, guys. I don’t even know where to begin with all of it, but I’ll do my best to get the point across without getting too verbose. The other members of ‘America’ (other KSUers currently studying in various other European cities) all arrived on Sunday evening the 10th, and spent the night on various dorm room floors, which unfortunately have NO carpet padding, and we all woke up at about 4:30am to take our last regular showers and walk down to Hofbräuhaus to catch the charter bus. The 14 hour bus ride there I could probably have done without, but it really only took that long because of all the stops we made on the way to appease the smokers and small-bladders. The drive took us south through ... read more

First, a reply to my illustrious entymology collegue, Travis (soon to be home from Iraq!) Egad, Egads, Igad - General Exclaimation. An alteration of "oh God." Simple enough. As in; "Egad! I got a wee beastie from my dip in the SRO (sharp rusty object)-infested canal!!" Another popular bastardization of "oh God," or rather, "for God's sakes," is Gadzooks. On to other matters.... The Itinerary This one is a sketch, so you can see where I'll be. A full copy will be left with IES for any emergencies. Also I finally have a phone, the number of which IES also has. Suggestions welcome, but everything is booked, so limit them to other things I should see in particular places. Also, I want to go to a music museum in Napoli, and I think there are several, ... read more
