An early start...
Just me and the swans. I jumped on the early train to lake Como this morning. With my camera packed and my iPod charged I was very much looking forward to the trip to the town that many of you would know as George Clooney’s home away from home.
The mayor of Como recently said of George Clooney “To mister Clooney we gave the honorary citizenship. We all are proud of his choice to live here on Lake Como." Clooney’s arrival might be popular with some however I get the impression that many don’t like what he brings - the paparazzi and the additional tourists. (See picture below!)
Inspired by the night at the opera I select the Best of Verdi on the iPod. Verdi’s music was inspirational even if the views outside of suburban Milano were not. A slow start through the city was soon replaced with the faster pace through the countryside and for the first time since arriving in Italy the sun shone.
The train trip to Como took just less than an hour and return ticket cost a very reasonable cost of €7. A heavy mist was resting peacefully over the lake on my arrival however by the time
Mist and Serenity
Como still resting I finished my coffee at Bar Fietta which is close to the station it was beginning to lift.
The serenity of this place has to be experienced perhaps it was because I arrived so early or the fact that the tourist season has ended however I somehow expected more activity but was pleased that there was less.
The only sounds to be heard was the occasional car driving by, the whirr of the sea plane engines warming up on the lake and a chorus of straw brooms sweeping mosaic tiled floors.
Ï wandered around a very small part of the lake (its way too large to walk around completely) It has an area of 146 km², making it the third largest lake in Italy, after Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore. The calm of Como was a great antidote for the hectic pace of Milan. I meandered around the water’s edge for an about an hour.
On my return to the centre of Como I discovered that the other tourists (those that obviously sleep longer than me) had arrived. They leap off the train and scatter like ants on a footpath before a storm. I took this
A misty start
There was much tranquility in the mists around Lake Como opportunity to stop for lunch at La Quintana.
I chose the Menú del Giorno of Fagotini in Salsa di Noci with porchetta caldi and green beans. It was delicious. After lunch I wandered in along the Lungo Lario Trenta before returning to the stazione to catch the train back to Milan.
Como is a beautiful town and its lake and surrounds are just incredible... it is a place I will return to one day and I would recommend it to anyone. If you can deal with the trauma of the ride you can take the funicolare to get a brilliant panoramic view of Como and the surrounds
Will George Clooney and his mates turn this into a Hollywood away from Hollywood? I hope not..
Dinner tonight (my last night in Milan) is at il Faro - a restaurant underneath Viviana’s place. I have an early start tomorrow (will be up at 4am) to head back to London. 5 days in Milan has been very very interesting!
