Thursday morning we woke up to say goodbye to Florence and begin our last adventure: Cinque Terre. Continuing our learning experience from the run to the Rome station, we left at a decent hour. We walked along the streets of Florence to the agency to drop off the key and head to the train station: Santa Maria Novella. Gwosh had got the train tickets the previous evening, so we were all set. Along the way, we walked behind a woman walking her West Highland Terrier (Westie). I started laughing as did Gwen. The previous day during our vespa tour, there was a Westie at the first stop and Josh didn't like it - "Those things are viscious!" Well, my parents have one and she is by far the sweetest dog in the entire world as is ... read more

We got up early again this morning and checked out of our hotel. We were a little stressed because the delay in our hiking trip due to yesterday’s train strike caused a problem for us today, we had to hike with our luggage. Mom and Dad had backpacks so that wasn’t awful, but I had my Vera Bradley duffle bag with me. I was not a happy camper when I realized I would be hiking with it all day. It wasn’t heavy, but it is painful to have the weight unevenly distributed to one side of my body for long periods of time. We took the train from Moneglia to Riomaggiore—the last of the 5 towns that make up Cinque Terre. We ate breakfast at a small café and it was delicious. Dad and I ate ... read more

I think I am starting to think more like an Italian. I can't remember which town was which in the photos I took tonight, and I'm fairly unconcerned about it. (Sorry all you friends who may be planning a trip and would like to know!) We had a really funny train ride to Riomaggiore - completely in the dark, as the lights weren't working in our carriage and the train trip through the five towns is mainly tunnels. It could have been quite freaky I suppose, but it didn't worry us. (See what I mean about the Italian influence?!) I love the fact that the long evenings allow us all this 'stolen time' to have almost another day's worth of fun. We didn't even set off until after 7pm, but it was hot and sunny. When ... read more

Last week I started my seminars where I teach Italian law students American Real Estate and Property Law. It is very difficult to not only explain in simple terms legal concepts but on top of that english is a second language to all of the students so I must speak very slowly and clearly since they are not used to American english. Our first class was in Parma and went very well, one man in particular asked tons of questions about escrow and title companys which showed his understanding of our lesson. The second class took place in Milan and took place on the same day that Lena flew into Milan so the timing was perfect. I was able to take an early train up to Milan and meet Lena and take her over to the ... read more

Buon giorno la famiglia e l'amico e l'amica, That is good morning to family and male and female friends (according to the phrase book). We had a long but not unpleasant flight. We caught up with four recent movies and I read a book so the time was not wasted. Our time in Rome was brief so we checked into our small room in the Welrome Hotel near the station. The hosts, Mary and Carlos, were a wealth of information and very concerned that we might miss something but we assured them we would be back later in the week. They are minding our suitcases while we back pack to the Cinque Terre and have assured us they are giving us a large room when we get back. I've booked a tour of the Vatican for ... read more

Geo: 44.0998, 9.73869Definitely loved Cinque Terre! Its a series of five small fishing villages that, ordinarily, is connected by a coastal trail. So you can hike from village to village, and it takes all of a day. Except a series of landslides took out 3 of the 4 trails, we discovered when we arrived. So there went THAT fantasy. lol. The towns are still connected by a series of other trails that are high up in the hill-mountains above the towns. The ascents and descents are somewhat brutal in the blistering sun. So.... we didnt get as far as we wanted. Anyway, Im ahead of myself.Getting to Cinque Terre worked out really well. We arrived in Milan after another overnight train ride, and caught the next train to Levante, which is just north of the villages. ... read more

Farewelled Henry and Mari at breakfast - lovely people. We pretty much repeated the first day (including a stop at the kids park again) except we visited the village Vernazza. Back in Riomaggoire we came across a huge mural showing fishing life with a goddess floating above. We all thought one of the characters looked like our neighbour Rob. What do you think Tracey? It was time for some laundry so I spent an hour or so at the local laundry-mat with one of the local cats on my lap. It helped. Then we had a repeated dinner in Riomaggoire at the same restaurant we visited when we arrived. Yes mum, I did wash my hands!!... read more

Woke to the bells of the local church - right next door. Was expecting seven rings (for 7 o'clock) but it just kept on going and slowly faded. Oh well - that will ensure we don't waste the day. We are staying in two separate rooms - only ones on the same floor, so me and one if the kids in one room, and Eileen and the other two in the other. Breakfast was in another building close by - very basic but did the job. Met a lovely couple during breakfast from Puerto Rico - Henry and Mari. They are in Italy for a conference (I think) and added a few days to sight-see. Henry is an accomplished violinist, plays in an orchestra and teaches, and Mari does promotional work in the same area (there's ... read more

After a great stay in Siena, we said goodbye to Gabriella and headed off to the Riomaggiore in the Cinque Terre. We travelled past Florence and headed first for Pisa. On the way there I must confess we stopped at a Mac Donalds. Now, now. This was a cross-cultural experience. We got to eat the Italian versions of the Macca meals. We also had an Italian version of a K-Mart next door where we grabbed some extra clothing (eg gloves). After a few missed Tom-Tom directions (on my part - with colourful language) and a longer than necessary tour of the city, we finally found the leaning tower of Pisa. It was raining again but that didn't stop us - after all, we have umbrellas now!! Katie was too young to climb the tower (we shouldn't ... read more

After five days in Rome, it was time to head north along the coast to the Cinque Terre (saturday 6th June), but first I had decided to stop off in Pisa to check out the Campo del Miracoli (Field of Miracles) where the Cathedral, Battistero and Campanile - better known as the Leaning Tower - were located. Despite nearly missing my train from Rome to Pisa beause the authorities at Trenitalia had once again decided to switch the platform for my train at the last minute; I managed to make it to Pisa and find my way to the Campo del Miracoli with no further problems - at which point I was just as shocked by the sight of the entire square being covered in grass (surely the first town I have seen in Europe where ... read more
