We woke up and got ready and then crossed the street to the café we found last night across from the hotel where we got fresh orange juice and a chocolate croissant. The guy running the café remembered us from last night when we stopped by and asked if he served pastries in the morning. We went back to the hotel and checked out, but we got them to hold our luggage. We then walked the 15 blocks to the metro station and took the metro to the Coliseum. The Roma pass we bought in the states and picked up yesterday allowed us to get on the metro free, but we couldn’t figure out how to use it. We showed it to a guard and he smiled and opened the entrance for us. Ok, so that is how you use them. The Roma pass also allowed us free entrance into the Coliseum.
The coliseum was everything you thought it should be. We just can’t believe that something so old is still surviving. It was sad to think about the lives of the people involved in building it and dying in it though. We then used our Roma pass to get
into the Roman Forum. This is a hotel California where you can check in but you can’t check out. We enjoyed walking around the Forum and looking at all the ruins but when we decided to leave we couldn’t find the exit. It was well hidden. By this time, we were both tired and my “bad” knee was starting to hurt so we headed back on the metro to the hotel. Here there was not someone to let us thru the metro station. We finally found someone to help and they showed us how to use the Roma pass at the metro. Why couldn’t they have told us that when we picked them up…
Back at the hotel is where it got exciting. We took a quick break in the bathroom, walked out and I didn’t see the step down. Thank goodness I had the brace on my good knee and thank goodness for the judo classes I took in college that taught me to fall. Down I went but I did do a judo fall and rolled thru most of it. Amazingly, I didn’t hurt the knees but I’m betting I would have if the brace had not
been on it. We had originally planned on taking the metro to the train station but after discovering it was 15 blocks over cobblestone roads.. and bad knees,… we instead got a taxi and headed to the train station. At the train station we bought the ticket for the train to the coast where we would catch our ship. We got the inter-city train – the fast one, simply because it was the next one out. We had a little bit of time and well, we found a Desiqual in the station, so we went shopping.
Our train arrived, and we boarded. Unfortunately, the tray table popped down when Susan was sitting and hit her in the stomach. I could tell it didn’t feel good. The rest of the ride was uneventful, and we caught a taxi to the ship. The ship is nice and new. It has the Viking flavor to it and includes all the amenities that the river cruise ships have. We had dinner and then wandered thru the ship to discover all that was available. We then crashed for the night.
