I stayed in a little suburb of Naples called Portici for 3 days. It was a cute little town between Naples and Sorrento with no McDonalds and I was surrounded by Italians, not tourists. It was wonderful! I felt like I was really in an Italian town. The first day I went to Pompei. Pompei was destroyed by a catastrophic volcanic explosion in 79 A.D. The top half of Mt. Vesuvius blew straight off and lava spewed 20 miles into the air. Ash and frozen lava rocks (the lava went so high into the atmosphere that it froze and fell to the ground as rocks) fell from the sky for 3 days burying the people and the buildings of Pompei. The wondrous thing is that the ash mummified some of the bodies of those who suffocated and preserved the town as it was more than 2,000 years ago. The town was buried until the 1700s when it was discovered and the excavation started. It took an incredible 200 years to get to the point it is today - and still only 60% of the town has been excavated. It’s an erie feeling walking down the streets of a city that existed 2,000 years ago. But it is astonishing to see how advanced they were - they had running water, sewer systems, gardens, mosaics on the walls, ovens, marble countertops, and, of course, a brothel.

After Pompeii, I went to the island of Capri. Capri is absolutely stunning! Surrounded by sparkling blue water with houses built into the hillside, it is breathtaking. I met an older couple on the ferry who had lived in New York for 40 years and then decided to retire in Capri. The man was born there. This would be an ideal spot to retire - lucky ducks!

Capri
No Doubt it is beautiful, I am sure everyone would like to retire there including me and Bepsy. From Picture I think it is similar like San Francisco. Don't workout too big Project getting retire there, better enjoy and bring back sweet memories with u, because we could not afford little Jenny staying that far away. Its amazing how nature and life cycle keeps on going years by years and never stop. It was nice to see u looking really relax. Cheers. Guddu

Capri...
Hey Jen, I totally agree -- Capri is one of the most adorable little islands I have visited! We really loved the time we spent there and its great how all the roads at the top of the hill are pedestrianised! I miss Capri, can't wait to go back some time! Hope your trip continues to go well... Take Care, Trishna
