I can't believe the sensation of racing motorcycles going full throttle past the grandstand down to Bray hill. Now imagine this: Stand beside your busy interstate or freeway. Not on the shoulder, but on the white line right beside traffic. But instead of vehicles traveling at 120km/h, they go by at over 300km/h! I'm getting ahead of myself. Let me start with getting here. Watching them load the ferry from Liverpool is fascinating! It's a rear loading ferry with a ramp system to turn cars around so they can drive around a circuit and not have to reverse off like typical drive on ferries. They installed posts where motorcycles are lashed to, avoiding the tedious task of pull down straps to anchor the bikes to the deck. Alright, back to racing! The Ilse of Man TT ... read more

Ok best day ever. I went to the Rest Home for Old Horses and stayed there half the day. It's a brilliant place - it was first started as basically a retirement home for the work/tram horses in Douglas and now they have all sorts of beautiful old darlings... along with some donkeys to keep things interesting. (Their names are off memory from looking at pics there... so... take it for what it's worth lol. It's more so that I can remember who was who in the pictures.) The lady who was in the gift shop was super friendly and basically gave me an overview of the place as I bought some food for the horses. She also told me about the oldest horse, Pocket (he's a little skinny - give him all the food he ... read more

Right, so I've found a place that rivals rural Wales for its quietness on a Sunday - there is no one out and nothing is open haha. I mean the heritage places are still open, and some stores in Douglas have very limited hours, but wow is it ever quiet. I took the bus to Castletown - on the way I noticed we passed the "Old Horse Sanctuary" which I need to google when I'm back at my BnB tonight. I haven't been horseback riding in forever - I'd very much settle for an hour looking at pretty horses and feeding them. Castletown is quiet enough on a weekday lol, so there was nothing going on today. I wandered along the bay - nothing special, just a lot of Arctic terns and swans which I guess ... read more

Lazy morning today - I kept putting laundry off and today was the day I could wait no more. Off to the local laundrette I went and it was oddly fun..? The owner was super chatty - she just moved here from Manchester last year and so we talked about how great the Isle is. She was also surprised I'd found the place since it's pretty much local regulars. I'm just special. Laundry done I headed off to Snaefell. It's supposed to rain the rest of my time here so I wanted to make sure I got it done today. I took the electric rail to Laxey (they still use the original historic tramcars from the 1890s!) which was great fun. Not the most comfortable thing, mind you, but again just fun to experience and hear ... read more

Breakfast in a BnB is hilarious just to hear all the old people chatter... even more so considering everyone is British. I think my fav this morning was a wife trying to explain to her husband what a cassowary is - "It's a bit like an ostrich gone wrong." Well... she's not wrong. And God the jokes. Hilarious that is until they started talking about immigration, ahem. Boy do the claws come out and a lot of hatred starts getting spewed... Anyway, on to happy things. Another charming thing about Isle of Man is their heritage in regards to transportation. They still have an old steam train, an electric mountain tram and an electric railway running regular service along with horse drawn trams. Come on now. I took the steam train today - very busy since ... read more

Yeah... Isle of Man has cracked my top three... sorry Germany, you fall to #4. Splendid weather today - I was going to go up Snaefell (their only real mountain), but the rail schedule is all funny today because of their "railway festival" so... hopefully there's another sunny day during my visit. Instead I went to Niarbyl and Peel. Bus ride was fun - it was basically a glorified mini van hahaha... but comfortable as anything you'd get on a real bus. Staying in Douglas is great because nothing is really more than 60-90min away. The driver was funny - it was his first time doing the route and didn't quite know where to drop us off. He asked if any of us had been on this route before - no, sadly the German family, the ... read more

The more I learn about the Isle of Man, the more excited I am to explore about for the next few days. Took a taxi to the dock this morning in Belfast - somehow my name turned into Nellie (which totally sounds like Julie). Which I suppose is better than my boarding pass for the ferry which simply said lol. The taxi driver was very chatty - of course we discussed weather, my next stop on the trip and what I do back home. The usual. The ferry ride was nice and smooth. I took the time to watch some shows on my laptop (Charlie Cox is adorable as Daredevil, just sayin') and just take in the scenery. Today is a splurge day, for I took a taxi from the ferry to my hotel as well ... read more

Today was absolutely beautiful, the sun was shining and there were no visible butts in sight, some would say a perfect day to watch the TT on the Isle of Man. This has been home for the last few days and it’s been an absolute eye opener. The Isle of Man TT (Tourist Trophy) is a series of motorcycle and side car races that are held on the island. The interesting part is that when the races are on, the island transforms into the race track and once a race starts then residents, and spectators (yes that's us), are restricted to the area they find themselves beacause the roads are blocked off. This sucks when the toilet is on the other side of the road.... Once the race finishes the island goes back to normal. The ... read more

If I had it to do over again, I’d probably book a hotel room in either Castletown or Peel, which is where I spent a good bit of the past 2 days. Castletown has the tall castle, and Peel has the spread-out one. Castle Rushen in Castletown was open yesterday; Peel Castle opens after Easter. Both of these towns have a charm; some might call it character. Both are immediately endearing. They have much more scenic views, in my opinion, than Douglas. Douglas, though, has more to do than either of these towns, which is why it’s where most people stay, and indeed why the capital is here. But you can get complacent in Douglas. In Castletown and Peel, you can visit for a day, and then there’s nothing else to do but admire the scenery. ... read more

This place is not one that has been immediately endearing to me. That's not to say that it's awful; quite the opposite. It just takes me a little time to appreciate some of the features of the Isle of Man. My trip up to Ramsey and Laxey are exemplary of that. Before I get into that, though, let me tell you about my morning... So, there was supposed to be a total solar eclipse today over the British Isles. I say "supposed," because I'll have to take everyone's word. As you can see from the picture, it was too cloudy to see anything, though I was told by some people that others on the island reported seeing it through tiny breaks in the clouds. Doubtful, but if it helps them sleep at night... So, I had ... read more
