Hello again, Soccer tryouts went very well even though I played without gloves, shin guards, and pants. My legs are still paying the price from the tryouts. I find out tomorrow whether I become a John Cabot Gladiator, or not. On Friday, we went on a scavenger hunt that took us all across the city. Through the tasks, we actually learned a lot about the transportation system and I think I am finally getting a feel as where things are. As my dad would say, I have developed an inner gyroscope. On the hunt, we saw the changing of the guard for the president of Rome and stuck our hands in the mouth of truth. That night we went to ice bar, which is was a must on my list. This bar is completely made of ... read more

We’ve said good-bye to our lovely little Renault and the Continent. Our last night was spent in Leuven (no rooms in Brussels due to European day of action by unions against austerity measures) which is an old and vibrant university town, also famous for brewing Stella Artois, and where our Belgian friends live (see pic 1). We had a very nice dinner with them (salmon for me, scallops for A, frites for us both!) then headed off to the Brussels airport in the morning, bound for Isle of Man. It’s great to be here with my brother and his family - very relaxed. The Isle of Man is beautiful (see pic 2) and very interesting...... read more

At the last day we took a rest in hotel and after we drove to Douglas. Overthere we watched towards Tower of Refuge like two freaks :-) and we waited for our ferry. We departed with delay above one hour. That time cruise was more varied because we had side wind and our boat was rocked pretty strong. I spotted some passengers got seasick. In general we found our short trip as wery well and we'd like to come back there qt the next year. bigger gang obviously and more more beers. :-) ... read more

Douglas (Manx: Doolish) is a capitol and the biggest town of the Isle of Man. In general Douglas looks very similar to different resorts on the British Isles fro example Llandudno in north Wales, but Douglas varies some details. Promenade is divided for three parts (from ferry terminal): Loch Promenade, Harris Promenade and Central Promenade. The promenade is very long, longer than I ever seen anywhere and I think it is about 3 miles long or even more. Douglad promenade has distinguishing feature - the horse trams. I regret a bit we didn't buy ticket for just one hack. We used only buses and we noticed that day railway station is located at the opposite site of promenade than the ferry terminal and bus station. I fully understand why these transporting features are dislocated - there ... read more

To Ramsey (Manx: Rhumsaa) we got by bus number 3 and we noticed weather were getting better, we saw blue sky in some interwals. We hadn't have there any significant attraction to see but I knew about Albert Tower and I mentioned my friend about it. This tower is made of granite and rising to 45 feet. It was built in 19th century (1847) to commemorate royal visit of Prince Albert and Queen Victoria. At first we walked around town centre until we reached to beach. Town is nice as each other on the island but we noticed Ramsey has less number of old buildings than the other towns. At the beach we noticed lighthouses and shortly after some young sand racers whose finished their racings on beach - that time wa low tide. When short ... read more

We travelled to Laxey (Manx: Laksaa) by bus number 3. We had one destination there - Laxey Wheel also known as Lady Isabella - name given after founder's wife name. We didn't know anything surely about this village and main attraction, we knew only its size - Laxey Wheel rises up to 22 meters or 76 feet. Wheather condition - very bad. Fog covered almost everything and while we were driving in bus we were afraid about availability to wheel and sense of our excursion. We put into the use someone's advice from Thursday and always we travelled in double decked buses at the front of top floor to see everything around us. That morning wa saw rain and fog mostly. Laxey Wheel we might say looks quite common but when we approached we noticed it ... read more

Europe » Isle of Man » Castletown July 9th 2010

We travelled to Castletown (Manx: Balley Chashtal) from Peel through Douglas by bus number 1. Main destinations in Castletown were Castle Rushen and Old House of Keys. First we directed to Castle Rushen and we noticed thai castle is different than the Peel Castle. This castle was built during Vikings had power on the island and it might consider as well good example of medieval architecture. Castle Rushen was built in 13th century and at present it is used as museum, court house and education centre. Most part of this castle runs as museum and it is managed by Manx Heritage. Inside this narrow roomed castle we can admire for nice exhibition and feel like one of inhabitants. This castle had to been very difficult to capture as we noticed because walls are quite high and ... read more

To Port Erin (Manx: Purt Çhiarn) we arrived from Castletown. This town looks like a typical resort and pretty similar to Douglas or Peel, especially when visitor consider familiar view of promenade. Prior we intended to find bus to Cregneash (Manx: Creneash) to see "living museum" that preserves old Manx life style, but we had to change our plans. We found out we have no any bus that day and were forsed to go overthere by foot. A local lad told us how to get there but we decised to resign because it was long distance and wheather got worser and started to rain. One of us spotted the Bradda Head cliff at the opposite side of the Port Erin Bay. It was Bradda Head with memorial tower milner's Tower at the top. To get there ... read more

We got to Peel (Manx: Purt ny hlnshey) about 5 PM, in accordance with our prior calculating. That day the weather was quite well and let us enjoy the island's landscape. Hills and cliffs everywhere. Houses are plastered and in general look much better than in England. In England towns look bleak and getting upset especially when raining. We noticed no litter anywhere. Our guesthouse - The Fernleigh is lokated at the front of the sea and quite close from Peel castle. We notice nice owners and cosy room. Splendid we thought - That's would be a nice couple of days holidays. First decision that we made it was go anywhere to take a breath and see someting interesting, and obviously to find a local pub to drink some beers after despite of we brought from ... read more

We arrived to Douglas (Manx: Doolish) at the afternoon and first object that attracted our attension was Tower of Refuge. This is a small fairy tale castle shaped shelter build for sailors whose have could refuge until any help could arrive and take them to port. Main reason why the building was build were numerous shipwrecks in the Douglas Bay - ships were were wrecked upon the semi-submerged rocks. We heard previously or red anywhere this is possible to get to Tower of Refuge at the low tide. We had copied accurate time when the high and low tides occures we could plan exactly when we can get there. Both of us: me and my buddy Paweł are RPG freaks and this small fantasy-like shelter separated from land by rising tidy enhanced ... read more
