I didn’t really have a plan for what I was going to do in Ireland. I just knew that I wanted to pop over and see my gran in Boyle (in Roscommon in the west of Ireland) before heading on our big trip. I couldn’t have picked a better time to visit - it was Boyle Arts Festival and my lovely aunty Martina had a whole schedule planned. She picked me up from the train station and said “right - you’ll have your dinner with your granny and then I’ll pick you up at 7.30 for a photography lecture, then maybe some music and then the next day ….” she really had thought it all through. On Thursday we drove toward the middle of the country and visited Roscommon Castle, an Anglo-Norman castle dating from about 1300. It’s a ruin, of course, but it’s open to the public and free. It seemed to be a popular spot for local moms to bring their kids to picnic and run around. It’s a great site to explore, and our students spent some time climbing the walls and photographing themselves among all the crumbling stones. It was the home of the Lord Chief Justice of Ireland, and so it is larger than most castles of this era. It has great examples of classic Norman drum towers. Our next stop was not far from Roscommon: Strokestown House, which was built in the 1730’s by the Mahon family, members of the Anglo-Irish ascendancy. These were people who ... read more

We had a great weekend back home with Dad to celebrate his birthday we spoilt him and he loved every second ,we had a great night in the local pub and now we are getting ready for our second trip home this month for xmas our last xmas before married life it's finally feeling like xmas we are both just looking forward to going home to chillax and unwind at last. Well its 12th of Jan 08 and Sam is only uploading xmas pics now time flys when your havin fun, it was great to be home again for xmas its hard to believe last year we were swimming in warm waters of Yamba Austraila and this time last year we were heading to Bangkok it feels like ages now. we have done so much since then, this year was quite and cosy at home just the way xmas should be lots of food , drink and laughter my only regret is missing people back home for different reasons i did'nt meet everyone this year, xmas flew and before we knew it we were back at work. It was so nice just to pop home for a few days Mum and Dad met us at knock, they were in great form. its funny when your away you think so much is going on at home but, really you don't miss a thing it stays the same and thats what makes it feel so nice and safe i suppose. we sorted out some business on friday and then it was straight to Galway to spend the night with our groomsman B and Lisa we ended up in a pub in oranmore i even bumped into an old teacher from college Loue smith i could not believe he remembered me. before i add photos sorry Lisa she said if i put them on my blog thats it she is going to kill me but, you ... read more
