Day 20 - Pre Pre History We started off with a really nice breakfast at our Bed and Breakfast (Greengates in Blackrock, Ireland). The hosts were very friendly, and they had a girl about Michelle's age who sat and had breakfast with us. Another American family was staying there tonight as well, and it turns out that they lived in Arroyo Grande until 2 years ago. Small World! Michelle got to spend an hour playing with the host's daughter, including some fancy free time in an Irish rain shower. After saying goodbye and exchanging emails and pen-pal promises, we headed towards a neolithic site nearby. Bru na Boinne is a collection of passage tombs (3 big ones) built thousands of years before Stonehenge and the Pyramids. We were very impressed with the engineering work that went ... read more

I have officially arrived in Shannon, Ireland! We are 5 hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Time...so it's currently about 8 A.M. here. I've been traveling since 10:40 A.M. yesterday, so it feels great to be on the ground! First off, let me just say...investing in first class for an overseas flight is SO worth it. Especially when it's an overnight flight like mine was. Being able to sleep and have a well balanced dinner - amongst other perks - left me feeling refreshed and ready to start our trip this morning! Plus being able to enjoy a little bubbly pre-departure and watch Casablanca over fruit and meat kabobs? Priceless. GREAT NEWS: Not an ounce of jet lag. I literally have so much energy I could run up the Cliffs of Moher (where we are touring today). ... read more

County Donegal Exiting Derry (or Londonderry depending on your point of view) meant the time had come to really get out into the Irish countryside. We suspect that not many Americans venture into the northwest part of Ireland, mainly because it’s a bit off the beaten tourist path created by the many travel companies that bring Yankees here by the planeload. The locals we have encountered are extremely friendly and always willing to chat it up and provide useful information. But back to the point….. Dave is an excellent driver even on the wrong side of the road (that’s what all Americans say) and as we ventured out of Derry for the countryside we were filled with excitement and expectations. We’d booked “The Best Irish Cottage” through airbnb in County Donegal near the town of Croaghacullion. ... read more

We woke up from sleeping in the giant beds in Adare to walking down for another complementary 'Irish Breakfast' There were so many options to choose from so we stuffed ourselves just incase our lunch was very late. We then walked main street of Adare which was a typical thatched roof town. The houses had little shops in them which were very cute and original. Most seemed like they were made locally compared to a chain store. We even found the perfect irish stereotype confiming how much they really drink. Inside of one pub we found 19 kegs waiting to be picked up by the garbage from the night before. We then went to the manor in Adare which Danika and I had to joke that it was no big deal, it's just a manor. We ... read more

Day 1. After a long flight with weather delays we arrived in Shannon, Ireland at 4:40am our time and 9:40 local time. Our driver Eric, was waiting patiently for us. We boarded our huge Mercedes van and off we went to dromoland castle for an Irish coffee (Ernie and I walked the grounds and took pictures. Next we went to the burrens and saw some old churches and castles and a lot of barren ground. We then stopped for lunch at Monks seafood and had our first meal and Guinness in Ireland! Cheers! We hopped back in the van and drove to the cliffs of Moher. Very beautiful! Back to the hotel we went as we were running out of time. We made the 7 o'clock mass and were out by 7:30! (That's seveven turdy in ... read more

Well today started with a rude wake-up. Kirsten went to turn off her alarm and glanced at her e-mail. There were 3 notices saying our United flight to Chicago was CANCELLED!!! Yes lovely. She quickly got on the phone to United who told her we were all rebooked for the next day. Obviously this was not acceptable. 45 min later we were rebooked on US Air with connections in Philadelphia and Phoenix. Not the quickest route home but still get home today. We arrived at the airport with no problems (a first for our driving). As suspected when we got there the line to United customer services was HUGE (hundreds) with 1 person helping them. Most would miss any option for another flight as they would still be in line. Thank goodness we could go to ... read more

Our first full day in Ireland started with a bang, a cold one. Judy was the only one who got a warm shower, Chester got the second shower and it went cold about 4 minutes in. Gene and Kirsten had nothing and did not like it. This was not good start for the driver of the trip. We got over the cold showers and headed for the day’s activities. Kirsten did a great job yesterday driving from the airport to our lodging and this is quite a feat since the roads are crazy narrow and sometimes they are not even wide enough for two cars to pass each other. It gets a little scary coming around blind turns. Gene rode shot gun and as everyone knows, if you are shot gun, you are the navigator and ... read more

Today started with a 4AM wake-up. The Guesthouse owner was supposed to leave us some sandwiches for breakfast in the fridge but they weren’t there. So we made ourselves at home and made our own breakfast. Let’s just say we were not that quiet and when she got up to see what was going on, she was not happy. She had made our breakfast, but left it in our fridge, not the one in the kitchen. Oops. She’ll get over it. But the sandwiches did come in handy for lunch. We had a 5 AM pickup with a 45 minute drive to the airport. We checked in with no problem in about 10 minutes and as predicted, we had 90 minutes to spare before our flight departed. This drives Kirsten nuts. That is another 60 minutes ... read more

Today I took a bus tour trip to the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren. The Burren is located in County Clare and is composed of limestone countryside. It was shaped my glaciers. All throughout the countryside there are fences surrounding the properties that are made of the limestone that is everywhere on the ground. they look so cool. The first stop was the Lemanagh Castle. This casstle was orginally owned by the O'Briens of Thomond. The ruin was orginally constructed by Conor O'Brien and his wife, Maire ni Mahon. Conor fought in the battle against the Cromwellians and died in battle. His wife knew that due to her last husbands allegiance, she would lose the castle and property. So she married an Englishman and it is said that the very next day she pushed him ... read more

After my tour-filled day I took a long shower and got ready to enjoy my last night in Dingle. I sat in the Hideout common room for a while to relax and met three Australian girls (who had been on my Fungie boat tour earlier) and a man from Israel. We watched the closing ceremonies of the special Olympics on TV. After a while I got up from the comfy sagging couches, told them where I'd be if they wanted to join later, and headed back out to find food before going to the Courthouse pub. I was determined to figure out what was so great about the place, and on a Sunday night I figured it wouldn't be as crazy packed as it was before. First I went back to the Dingle Hotel bar to ... read more
