Greetings from chilly, windy, rainy Iceland - nice land! So refreshing to be in the fresh air (temps this morning were 9 degrees celsius! - not bad!) - beautiful, clean city - awesome, clear, tasty drinking water. We landed at about 4:30 p.m. - had a big tail wind that got us in earlier. One of my photos (look really close!) has a shot of the ice building on the window by my seat on the plane - I knew we were coming into MY kind of temperature! Landing was perfect - getting through airport was perfect - bus ride to hotel was perfect and comfy.........we're happy campers. This is my 3rd trip to Reykjavik - and I love it. Put it on your bucket list - summer or winter. It's unique, friendly, modern, clean and ... read more

When you hear of Iceland, what is the first thing you think of these days? Volcanic eruptions. We have volcanic eruptions every 5 years on average. Well, should have said used to have them every 5 years, seems there are volcanic eruptions every year now. In 2010 an eruption started late night, but it only lasted a few days and everyone was excited to see it - that is Icelanders were. Many tourists cancelled their trips to Iceland because of that eruption. It quieted again soon and then we had the big bomb: the one with the impossible name woke up after 200 years of silence. AND, it sent ash and pumice into the air blocking all flight in Europe. Iceland airports were fine, didn't close at all. Soon after the eruption started I was asked ... read more

Iceland is a birdwatcher's paradise. Not because there are so many different types of birds, but because there are so many individuals in each of the species that nest in this island. Only about 74-80 types of birds nest in the country. June 2011 I had five people interested in a birdwatching tour, not many but a perfect group. We started the tour on June 1 in Snaefell peninsula, western part of Iceland. It was cold! Colder than in an average year. Still, we were prepared for all kinds of weather and at least it didn't rain and no wind either. On our first day we spotted several types of seabirds. The cliffs in this part of Iceland are spectacular, holes in the ground and the sea kind of erupts up these holes when there's a ... read more

We have just completed a week in Iceland and wow, what a trip! Iceland surpassed all expectations that we had and we cannot recommend it enough for you to take a trip there. Flights were easy, just a two hour hop from Manchester, we collected our hire car at Reykjavik airport and we were off. We spent our first few days using the capital Reykjavik as our base and would wake up early each morning and set off for a day’s driving and exploring. We stayed in a lovely guesthouse called “House of Spirits” (Thankfully we didn’t get visited by any ghosts :) ) which was right next to the main shopping district, harbour, bars & restaurants etc. Many people think Iceland is crazily expensive and whilst it definitely can be, there are ways around this ... read more

(To see all 64 pictures, you just need to click on one and you can scroll through!) Iceland! Wow! What a trip! My mom and I seized the chance to do some traveling during my employment gap, and a knitting tour to Iceland seemed like the right move! We went with a group called Knitting Iceland run by a fantastic woman named Ragga. Getting enough of her, knitting, nature, food, Reykjavik, geothermal pools, horses, sheep, crazy weather, and creativity was impossible! The airport is located about forty minutes from Reykjavik so right off the bat we were able to get a taste of the incredible landscape through our sleepy eyes. One part of the drive is through a lava field which is covered in lush green moss, while other moments offered views of a rather stormy ... read more

Some dive are more impressive than others...some are actually even colder than your average dive! Today challenge, diving the Great Divide of Silfra in the Thingvellir National Park. I know, you are asking me but what the hell is he speaking about. Fifty kilometers from Reykjavik lay the Thingvellir National Park with a huge lake in the middle of it. This lake is actually fed by water filtring from glaciers way away from here. And in the middle of this wonderland is Silfra. This is the crack in between two seismic plates, being the European plate and the North American plate. In some places this crack has been filled through the centuries by water melting and filtering from surrounding glaciers. This means the water is at a constant 2 degrees celsius...but better, this water is so ... read more

From Swaziland to Iceland in eight days...yes it did happen. Little transfer in South Africa, few days in Bangkok, party week-end in Saigon with Mari, little transfer in Oslo and I made my way to Reykjavik. I'm still alive! For the next three days I'm going to enjoy the first few days of the Icelandic winter, or should I say the last few days of the Icelandic summer. Temperatures...well, between -1 and up to 9 degrees celsius. I'm not going to say it was cold! The good news, is that days were still pretty long with sunrise at 7am and sunset at 7pm, not bad! My first stop was Reykjavik international airport to rent a car for 48 hours. The airport is a seriously busy affair...beside our SAS plane, I spotted one more single aircraft behind ... read more

Wow, I only spent a week in Iceland but it really has been the most special place I've visited on this trip. The landscape is so unique, changing rapidly and ALIVE. After our near-death experience on the hike, things calmed down and Melissa and I had the chance to relax in the Blue Lagoon - an innovative idea to use the warmed water filled with natural silica as outdoor baths (plus they make very nice beauty products). Then we had dinner out where I tried Minke whale - a strangely beef-like meat. The next day, I had the chance to see my first real Minke whale in the bay. It was more whalespotting than watching, but it was a calm, gorgeous day on the boat and the dolphins and Minkes just rolled up and over in ... read more

Please note: all the photos and titles have been mixed up during the upload by travelblog. So sorry, try to imagine how they should be! Iceland is just gorgeous. I arrived to near-zero visibility, driving rain and icy temperatures, but still I was instantly in love. The landscape is magnificent and the postcard pictures finally do a place justice. The ground is black larval rock that rises in mounds like giant chocolate muffin tops, breaking through. There is soft, luxurious. luminous green moss covering most of it, with sprinkles of red, orange and yellow flowers. Yummy! Melissa took me on a drive on the first day to see the geothermal areas. Here, the ground is literally broken open by hot steam and water. They bore holes into the ground to capture the steam in pipelines that ... read more

After some action packed days, driving on the wrong side of the road scaring the locals, we figured it was time to chill out and hang around town in one of the many natural the hot pools. The weather started to get alot cooler so it was nice to have done all the outdoorsy hiking etc during the 1st few days, so we didn't freeze to death. We ended up in a last min decision going to an orchestra at the Harpa concert hall (the big square glass building). Being all civilised watching pieces of Rachmaninoff and Shostakovich. The concert hall was amazing, apparently one of the top 7 in the world of acoustics. Icelanders are very arty and love their concerts etc. So even though Iceland had an economic meltdown, they still found enough money ... read more
