On the way we passed a number of gorgeous waterfalls at Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss, the former is popular as you can walk behind it, due to the time of the visit we had it all to ourselves. Sandwiched in between these fall was the infamous Eyjafjallajökull volcano which was the cause of the ash cloud over most of Europe in 2010. After nearly 5 hours of driving we arrived at the Vatnajokull glacier for our glacier walk. Due to lack of time we couldn’t do the longer 4 hour walk and ha... read more

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4hFqB2XGW0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bkek0Tdh4pQ The previous evening we decided that as we had a 4x4 we would take advantage of it and drive to the Hekla volcano and climb it. Hekla is located south east of Reykjavik with a height of 1,491 metres. Hekla is one of Iceland's most active volcanoes; over 20 eruptions have occurred in and around the volcano since 874, unfortunately it wasn’t active when we were there and stubbornly remained snow-capped:-( It was an ordeal to get to the mountain itself, around an hour and a half on route 1, then half an hour on gravel road and then another half hour on proper off-road terrain which was fun. According to Icelandic Law you should only go off-road on indicated paths, but everywhere you can see tracks from vehicles that had left the roads ... read more

Thankfully I had some company with me this time so that made this trip possible. The reason is that to truly visit all the best sites you need to hire a car plus there are very few hostels outside the main cities. You could visit Reykjavik and do the Golden Circle on a tour but to see anything further afield is difficult using public transport and requires a lot of patience and reliance on hitchhiking. So if you are still interested then please read on:-) As previously stated a hire car was essential to see all the ma... read more

Day 8 – Rise and shine at 6:30am. Of course there was Skyr for breakfast – we had to keep it in the car to keep it cool, since there was no kitchen here. Then we packed up and packed the car and got ready for the shuttle to pick us up. We expected them between 7:20 and 7:30, but they came at 7:50. We were a little bit freaking out that they forgot us and we were going to miss the 8:00 departure. But they did come and we made it there by 8:00. When we got there, the tour bus was full. Oddly. So they had to get another bus and everyone had to transfer. Strange that they didn't realize how big the group was and plan accordingly. Anyway, we had a 30 minute ... read more

Day 7 – Today was a driving day. We were going from Akureyri to Reykjavik, which would be at least five hours of driving, without stops. We did plan a couple of stops in there, to visit a place with old farm house longhouses, a hot water spring where water is taken and used to heat homes up hundreds of kilometers away, a place where water pours out from under the lava rock, and another waterfall. It was a nice set of stops. When we got into Reykjavik, we checked into our hotel. We didn't really like it or the location too much. We were able to get a little money back on the cost, as the breakfast would be served later than stated and we would have to miss it to make our tour the ... read more

Day 6 – Today we slept in a little bit and then chatted again with the Swiss family at breakfast. We packed up the car and headed out on our way to Akureyri, the biggest town outside of Reykjavik. As we were leaving, we saw another couple load their car with a bag specifically from a store near our home in Basel. Very weird. At the gas station we bought two of our favorite cookies, that we had discovered there the night before. Yum. We started the trip with a stop at Dettifoss waterfall, and I think this was our first waterfall without rain. We drove an hour or so to Akureyri, checked in to the hotel and walked around town. Not a great day, but not too bad. No rain, anyway. We ended up walking ... read more

Day 4 – Today we woke up to good weather again. Such a treat. We were told that this area has had sun for weeks and was actually too dry for the crops to grow properly. This was hard to imagine as we have had so much rain in such a little time, but this part of the island has been unaffected by this weather. So our plan was to drive north around the ring road and get to Husavik in time for a whale watching trip. We did in fact get there, but when we did the weather was terrible. Rainy and cold again. It was actually quite dramatic to see the line where the sun ended and the clouds began. We were not sure if we should go on the whale trip in these ... read more

Day 3 – We woke up early today and had some breakfast – I had Skyr of course, with some museli. Then we got started on our day. We were heading out to Skalanes, another farmhouse in the eastern fjords. But our first stop was very cool. We headed to the place where icebergs that have broken off from the glacier head out to sea. It was very cold, but not raining (!) and it was so cool to see. We watched the icebergs sail out, some crashing into other larger ones that had gotten caught on the bottom and creating a big show and tumble of ice. Then we went down to the beach and stood with the ice that had washed up to shore. A very novel experience. From there we had a lot ... read more

Day 2 – Monday started out cloudy, a common phenomenon here. We drove first to a place Jeroen wanted to see, with a rock arch in the ocean. That was cool to see, but even better was that from there we could actually walk quite close to where puffins were nesting. I had been wanting to see these birds for a long time, and it was so cool to see them so close. They are so cute and fun to watch. They have to flap their wings 300-400 times a minute to stay in the air, so they look quite clumsy, but they are great underwater “fliers”. From this site we went on to Skaftafell National Park. This park is famous for a glacier three times the size of Luxembourg. A lot of people go for ... read more

Day 1 – We arrived in Reykjavik at 11:45pm on Saturday night. It took a while for the luggage to come through, and I got some cash at an ATM while Jeroen waited for the bags. Next stop was finding Fox Rent a Car, operated by Atak car rental. Atak, love it. Luckily Jeroen was looking around and saw my name on a sign. It was Omar, from Atak, and he drove us to their office, about a minute away. We decided to upgrade to a 4x4 car, even though it was tiny. The terrain in Iceland can be bad, so we went for the car. We finally got out of there at 1am or so, and went searching for the bed and breakfast we had chosen near the airport. Since we are so high in ... read more
