Bienvenidos a mi blog!

This was THE day - snowmobiling on the Vatnajokull glacier outside Reykjavik. Again, this was something I had done the previous year and knew that it would be the highlight of Jo's trip. I wasn't wrong. This trip starts early with a pickup at about 8am or so. It was organised through Iceland Excursions, who are a great company to organise Icelandic trips with. Because of an admin error we got ungraded from a pure snowmobiling trip to a trip which involves snowmobiles as well as the Golden Circle tour. Bonus! As can probably guess, yes, I did this tour as well last year. No problem though as it is great. The trip is run in huge trucks on raised suspension and massive snow tyres, as the picture show. This is because the terrain after Gullfoss ... read more

Day 2 in Iceland was a trip to the Blue Lagoon outdoor geothermal spa. The first time I heard an outdoor pool in the near-Arctic conditions of Iceland I thought the idea was completely insane and was just for those crazy Nordic types - you know, the types who go naked into communal saunas and then flog themselves silly with branches of trees. The setting of the Blue Lagoon in incredible - the frozen, barren tundra near Grindavik on the way to Keflavik Airport. You can see the hot steam rising from a few miles away as you approach it. The water is heated by the nearby geothermal energy plant, which harnesses the naturally produced underground heat to create electricity for the surrounding area. Iceland is predominantly geothermally heated and has no nuclear power. As it ... read more

This is my first time out of the country since my return. Iceland had much to offer but little daylight to see it in. 5 hours of sunlight gives little window for day time exploration. As if that wasn't enough a frozen center and impassable signs on every tributary road made our adventures harder to come by but we found/made our own. 4 cuban miamians in a frozen country with a 4x4 guaranteed a good time. The drive from Reykjavik to the Northern Fjords was peppered with beautiful scenery with not a sole in sight. We drove where ever we desired. We bypassed 2 "impassable" signs, only to find out that they weren't lying. After following a dirt "road" around the sign and dashing through rivers that our car had no business going through we reached ... read more

Jo and I took a trip to Iceland for 4 days/3nights at the start of February 2008. I have been before, the previous March, and found the place unlike anywhere I have been before, so decided Jo had to see it as well. OIn the way out we were delayed by 5 hours at Glasgow airport due to appalling weather conditions facing the preceding flight which was leaving from Reykjavik to collect us. That boded well. While we should have arrived at 1pm and had the large part of the Thursday ahead of us, we finally got into the hotel at about 7pm and just had time to change and get out for dinner and a couple of drinks. That said, the sceneryt was incredible on that first day. It has snowed heavily for a couple ... read more

As is now a well established tradition, my final activities before leaving for the airport were dominated by the disappearance of my camera charger. Arrival in Reykjavík co-incided with being buffetted furiously by a wind so wild that you couldn't actually tell which direction it was trying to blow you in. On the bus to the city, I began talking with a lovely German girl who had been living in Iceland for 11 months - and helped me with my then non-existant plan by suggesting to me a route, and some places not to be missed, to which I replied occasionally with witty aplomb and my finest Deutsch. She taught me my first lesson of Icelandic weather, which apparently is that "there is no such thing about bad weather , only bad clothes." I laid down ... read more

Fantastic weekend in the South West area of Iceland. Normal two wheel drive car £90 from Budget car hire. Stayed in centre of Rykjavik in Hotel fron. Cheap, clean and a good breakfast. Went round the Waterfalls, Blue Lagoon and the Geysers all in one day. It's easy to navigate the area and you can find cheap places to eat and drink. We made our own sarnies from the food available at breakfast time in the hotel including drinks! Take the coast road via Grindavik for the best views of the North Atlantic. The locals are great. Not much to do in Rykjavik apart from wondering around the flea market so get out to the National Park area towards Pingvalla to see the two continental plate ridges. Well worth visiting the area. Hope this helps - ... read more

Before I begin you may have noticed in the last blog I had named some of the photos 'Iceland' -they were in fact Geneva not Iceland I must have had Iceland on the brain! Here you will find out why... On the 9th Nicola and I left for Iceland along with 8 others, we didn't arrive in Reykjavik (the capital pronounced reck-a-vick) until midnight and by the time we got to bed after getting the shuttle to our Hotel named Cabin Hotel it was around 3am. (it wasn't cabins, just named that... weird.) We got up around 8am for a Buffet Breakfast in the Hotel and then headed off to get a bus to The Blue Lagoon -Thermal Pools. We missed the bus by 5 minutes but it was as if it was meant to be.. ... read more

After missing the Northern Lights in Alaska, I traveled to Iceland, December 4-9, 2007, hoping to see them. Iceland is a Scandinavian country lying between Norway and Greenland. It is an island nation the size of Kentucky with a peninsula extending from its northwestern corner that looks like a crab with pinchers. Iceland was a Danish colony until 1944. It became independent when the Nazis occupied Denmark. Iceland's flag has the Scandinavian cross, a red cross outlined in white against a blue field. Greenland was granted self-rule by Denmark in 1979. People like to say that "Iceland is green, and Greenland is covered with ice." Iceland is warmed by the Gulf Stream. It was not nearly as cold in Reykjavik as it was in Boston. I flew U.S. Airways to Boston and took Icelandair. I landed ... read more

We went to Iceland for XMAS with Daves family who are also over here (Daves cousin Mike and is wife Caz and Jen Irlam). This was the most amazing holiday ever for the unbelievable scenery.. It was also very cold it reached a high of -8 degrees on our first day there with a wind chill factor of something rediculous. We hired a car and drove around the surrounding areas of the capital Reykavik. So here are all the photos which really dont do it justice. Hope everyone had a great XMAS too!!!!... read more
