After getting off the plane at 6:15 am in Iceland, we started our trip by going to the Blue Lagoon spa. The water there is naturally light blue from the silica, and they have mud (in buckets) you can put on. Even though it was freezing outside, the water was hot, heated naturally by geothermal energy. From the Blue Lagoon, we headed to Reykjavik and then to Hafnarfjordur, about half an hour away from downtown Reykjavik, to drop our stuff off at our Airbnb location. We spent the afternoon walking around Hafnarfjordur and then decided to go to a couchsurfing meet up in Reykjavik. When we got back to our Airbnb at 10:30, it was still bright out and looked like early evening. Today, we spent the day in Reykjavik. After dropping our bags off at ... read more

We made it to Iceland last night, staying at the Castle House apartments near the Tjornin. Reykjavik really is a small town (at its center), with a large amount of sprawl. In this, it reminds me more of a North American city than a European one. We found it easy to walk to a center of restaurants and found the restaurant Gandhi - amazing Indian food. We also located the closest grocery store. Believe it or not, I lost my raincoat in the Iceland airport as we disembarked (it was attached to a carabiner, and packaged up in its pocket - it came detached). We arrived in blindingly horizontal rain, wind that could pick up a small child and move him, and cold temperatures (... read more

Since the weather has turned so bad we had a full day of no real activity in Reykjavik. We were still recovering from the hike and drying all our gear but unfortunately we could not extend our checkout time at the hostel. So we made some Upma for breakfast and then started packing. Finished just in nick of time and checked out at 11:00. Now the big question is what to do. There were some museums that I wanted to see. We had not really seen Reykjavik. First order of business was finding lunch though. We started walking around and spotted cafe Glo. It seemed quite popular and one of those organic vegetarian sort of places. We wanted to try it out. We ordered a tex-mex soup with salads and a raw Thai curry. Everything was ... read more

Day 3: Hvanngil - Emstrur (Botnar) 10 km, 4 - 5 hoursElevation decrease: 40 m We saw a really lot of people one starting on the trail. We were wondering where all those people came from, probably there was some way for the buses to get in. Right after leaving the campsite, there is a bridge to cross one of the river Kaldaklofskvísl. This was a really nice area with rivers, stones, lot of streams, mostly flat. Then we saw service road and a bus driving in a distance. So that would explain sudden appearance of so many people on the trail. It was like a mela. Soon the second-deepest river of the trail needs to be crossed. Typically it would take some ... read more

This is a 4-day backpacking trip is the reason we were in Iceland. We started with a bus from our campsite to Landmannalaugar. Day 1: Landmannalaugar to Hrafntinnusker 12 km, 4 - 5 hoursElevation increase: 470 m We took the hiker bus from campsite to landmannamaugar. The bus goes through some interesting mountain roads, wading a few rivers. It stated out as cloudy and drizzly but became a bit sunny by the time we reached the starting point. We were somewhat apprehensive about the hike - how difficult is it, how is the weather going to be and how are we going to deal with the snow etc. We knew that a stormy front is coming on Sunday, but we were supposed to have ... read more

We landed in Reykjavik around 23:00, got our bags, bought a ticket for the bus (greyline), and then waited. There was actually quite a bit of daylight at that time. The sun was on horizon, ready to set. We had to wait long for the bus, and it was mid-night and we saw the sun set in horizon close to mid-night. Little did we know this will be the only sun and sunset we will see on the trip. Even after sunset there was twilight which lasted all night. This was interesting. The bus dropped us at campsite, and we setup camp and slept. Day 2: We had hostel (next door to campsite) booked for 2 nights as we wanted to relax before and after the marathon. The hostel from Hostelling International turned out to be ... read more

Day One (06/20): Jay and I boarded our plane At 630 pm and it arrived in Reykjavik at 630 am the next morning. A first I thought tat the plane ride was going to be great; everyone got blankets and pillows to keep comfy on the ride. ooooh and a free water bottle. But alas, like every other flight these days we didn't get any food. Not even peanuts or pretzels for heaven's sake. needless to say we were exhausted by the time we got to the airport. Day Two (06/21): We took at shuttle bus from the airport, which was 45 minutes away from the centre of town. Reykjavik has only about 200,000 people but it is very spread out. Our hostel is rig the centre of the city which is great. the reception floor ... read more

Today is my first official day in Iceland as part of the 2014 Snorri Program. We arrived in Iceland around 8:30am GMT (I think that's the time zone Iceland is in... at least that is what it says according to Google), which is 5 hours ahead of North Dakota. The Keflavik International Airport is about 30 minutes from Reykjavik, so we got a short drive to see some of the countryside driving to town. First thoughts on Iceland - it is beautiful, unique country. Not only is the city of Reykjavik stunning with interesting architecture and beautiful views, but the countryside is lovely, and the people are absolutely beautiful! Even the children are strikingly beautiful. I have seen numerous toddlers who would objectively be considered way more stylish than myself. We immediately checked into the Guesthouse ... read more

Reykjavik, Iceland--Sunday, June 8th Sailing into Icelandic waters early this morning, we passed a number of volcanic islands that were squared off at the top like a table. The volcanoes have essentially risen from the sea, spewed their stuff out over their sides, and then blown their tops off and folded into themselves. One island is still active with hot lava and is large enough that you can fly out to it on a 20 min. flight and tour around by bus for a day. Would be interesting to see, but I am not sure I can be comfortable in this tiny little plane to land on a volcano—plus the trip is quite expensive. We were docked by 8:00 am this morning at the New Harbor, quite a distance from the center of town. The Old ... read more
