So the last day in Iceland arrived with a blast of winter. My car had snow and ice all over it. I put on the windscreen wipers and water and scraped the window off with a plastic card. I could at least see. I didn't leave the accommodations until about 10:30 so I could see a bit more. I headed south toward the Blue Lagoon. This is a hot pool with naturally occurring silica, supposedly good for the skin and health. There is no bookings available for this place on short notice and for a 1 hour slot it costs about $100AUD. I decided that it was not worth that much money but went for a walk around the pathways. The water is an amazing blue because of the silica in the water. The water around the Blue Lagoon is cold, it isn't heated until inside. Still an interesting place. I continued on towards a lighthouse that was listed but on the way I found this place called Brimketill. This is a naturally occurring big bath-shaped tub on the side of a cliff over the ocean. Because of the wild weather the last few days, the waves were thundering over the
pathway when I walked out to the coastline. A short drive down the coast and I arrived at a place called Gunnuhver. This is an active geothermal area with huge steam vents. I walked out on the boardwalk and my clothing and coat were soaked from the steam. The area smells like Rotorua in NZ; lots of sulphur in the air.
I set off for the Bridge between the Continents. This is where two of the worlds tectonic plates meet. It is the connection between the European and North American plates. I then tried to find my accommodation for the evening close to the airport. The car GPS had no idea and so I had to use my phone which didn't like connecting the data. After driving around for a half an hour, I found the house. It was the first time I had ever shared a room. I was a bit apprehensive but I needn't have been. It was a fun evening. We played a hilarious game of UNO... much cheating and I met some really lovely people. I checked with the owner of the house and he said that it was a 50/50 chance and told me
to go back to the Bridge between the continents. Everyone else went out to watch the New Year's fireworks which are legal in Iceland and everyone has them in their own backyards!
When I arrived back out at the Bridge (15klms) there were already people there. I set up the camera and tripod, not sure what settings to use. The bus driver of a group came over and offered to help. He set the camera up with the open lens. He then took photos with me in them. The aurora was not really green to the naked eye but the camera was able to pick up greens and pinks. Very cool. This is a biggie off the bucket list. I had to wait until the last night in Iceland. The fireworks were going off everywhere when I drove back into town. The others arrived back just after me and by 1:30 we had all crashed. What a great night!
